dragon saving shanks was not on my god valley bingo card, but it actually makes a lot of sense. dragon saved shanks, and then shanks saved luffy.

God Valley has the reputation of being all about the clash between the old generation of pirates, when the actual focal point was the children caught up in the conflict.

There are the teenagers on the cusp of adulthood like Dragon and Iva grappling with (for possibly the first time in the case of the former) the horrors of war and having to take up responsibility in rallying others and protecting other children when the adults in power throw them to the wolves.

There's the younger kids like Ginny and Kuma, right on the cusp of adolescence who are trying to help out the best they can and whose innocence isn't quite as eroded as Dragon's but it's getting there.

And then there are the littlest among them. Baby Shanks and Shamrock and little Teach who are utterly incapable of understanding what's going on as their homes and families are being torn apart around them. Utterly helpless to do anything but cry in terror.

Ironically despite being so young, it's these particular kids whose futures are going to be most shaped by this nightmarish day. Both for the better and for the worse.

And now we know the narrative reason for why Garling told the twins' mother about the human hunt before stabbing her.

This woman whose face we don't even know is going to be who utterly annihilates Dragon's faith in the institution he's been trained for his whole life. Which seems fitting because Dragon has always fought for the faceless masses who suffer at the hands of the government.

But you know Dragon doesn't consider this day a victory. For one thing, how could he possibly do that after all the death and destruction he's about to be thrust into? But for another, he only accomplished half his goal. He was only able to protect one of the babies with the other ending up in the clutches of the man who murdered his mother and shaped him into just as much of a monster as himself. A man who Dragon very may well be fighting right now since Shamrock got called back to the currently incendiary Holy Land.

I'm sure the final fight with Shamrock is going to involve Shanks in some way but man do I want it to be a double-team between Shanks and Dragon now.

We also don't know if Dragon has a Devil Fruit by this point. I like to think he does, but there's also a good chance he swapped out Shanks for one of the Devil Fruits that was in one of the prize chests and ate it here on God Valley. It would be a nice parallel to Kuma who did the exact same thing.

HC that the reason that Dragon of all people was sent to God Valley as a teenaged marine recruit for a training mission was that the Navy saw he had an “empathy problem” and needed to “toughen him up” if they wanted Garp but Better.

You know… the Navy grooming Dragon to surpass Garp would certainly explain why he knows how to properly pour the wine in that one scene.

They probably had him taking etiquette lessons in between drills and training missions for when he was eventually meant to be serving and taking orders from the Gorosei directly.

Soul crushing work, physically and mentally. Barely enough time to himself in a day to even sleep. All of it to better break him down and shape him back up.

Shanks yes! I'm not sure about Buggy because I don't think Dragon spent time on Roger's ship once he became a marine. But he probably crosses paths with them (like in this comic) and gets roped into doing stuff for Roger anyway *lol* So babysitting both Shanks and Buggy seems to be a possibility!
