no dentist's office. no writing christmas cards. no taking flights. a world where every pain or minor annoyance is dismissed as your consciousness is replaced with a different version of you. a life without pain, or agitation, or monotony. and conversely, a life full of only that for every version of you who experiences the chores you wished to evade.

forget skipping work or school or birth. try everything. never experience anything that expires a negative emotion. the ideal consciousness sold as a product for the price of a version of you that you'll never meet.

but it doesn't matter. you carry the hurt down with you. in your hands, in your mind, your mouth. the grief mark experiences carried into his innie, gemma feeling the pain she experienced in the rooms even after she's been severed.

The fact that she’s alive. She’s really alive. Gemma crying whimpering for mark in the elevator. Fuck me.

I have spent this whole season thinking the tragedy is that mark will try and try to save Gemma only to find out she can’t be saved.

But no. The real tragedy is that she can be. She’s down there desperate to get out. And mark is going to miss her by the tiniest chance

I'm sure everyone has said this on my beloved Overanalysis Site™ but I'm so obsessed with the fact that this episode is our first encounter with warm colour palette

Yes!!!!! Gemma made Mark's life meaningful and gave it warmth and colour, and it manifests in the filtered sunlight and dusty bookshelves and vivid warm green plants!! It's sunny, people smile! Grief has yet to line the faces of our cast!

The juxtaposition of that versus Mark's ikea core Lumon standard suburbian house (dark, cold, the lightbulb is broken) and Gemma's new room (a white void prison with the illusion of comfort)

mark and gemma right now are like. well we're both orpheus and we're both eurydice and because of that we get to meet in the middle this time. we're both feeling our way blindly forward and constantly forced to look back which means i'll run right into you on the way out, trying to find you while you try to find me. this will not save us. it always ends because our eyes meet. but at least it was a little different this time. that's worth something. see you soon. i love you...i said--im sorry, i love you too.

god. mark used to have books in his house. full shelves. stacks on the tables. gemma used to have books in her house. they were history professors. now he doesn’t own a single bookshelf. her books are all bound in testing room blue. THEY USED TO HAVE BOOKS IN THEIR HOUSE.

The most disturbing thing in all of Severance was watching Gemma fight back, strike down the doctor, run from the nurse, fight to get free…. Only to transform into the timid Ms Casey who can be sent back to her undoing with only a polite smile and firm words from Mr Milchick. Gemma would have rushed him, kicked him, bit him, done anything to get past him. But Ms Casey can’t even finish a sentence before Mr Milchick interrupts her. She’s not even allowed to voice a thought. And she goes meekly back to a place she knows is bad, even if she can’t remember it.
