Quote
“Mental pain is less dramatic than physical pain, but it is more common and also more hard to bear. The frequent attempt to conceal mental pain increases the burden: it is easier to say “My tooth is aching” than to say “My heart is broken.”
C.S. Lewis, The Problem of Pain (via 13neighbors)

By Christian Hopkins, this very talented young photographer uses his photography as a true artistic outlet to help with his depression. The whole set of images are just stunning and really draw you in, a perfect example of how art can help a person having a difficult time to express themselves.

Please don’t be angry with people for not understanding something. Explain to them. Educate them. Inform them. Do not yell and call them names. Because they will still not comprehend. Except now, they are hurt. And you are the jerk.

Not An Adjective
I believe that society has this mentality that it is okay to be depressed, suicidal, have an eating disorder or eating disorder tendencies, or to self harm or to self mutilate. Maybe not society as a whole so much because I think that they are choosing to ignore mental illnesses but more specifically the Tumblr society. I do, by all means, know that Tumblr is a place to air out ones frustrations and to find people with similar interests to one’s self. But there are many posts about self harm that suggest if you do it or attempt it you will find your perfect someone to come and kiss your pain away. This glorification is allowing us to justify the exaggeration of our feelings. I have heard many people throwing out comments such as “oh I failed my physics exam I’m so depressed” or “Look at how gross she looks, she probably cuts herself” or “look how anorexic she is”. None of these comments are appropriate.
Starting with the depression comment. Depression can stem from deep seeded issues many tracing back to a childhood memory or it can be brought on by a tragic event. Many cases of depression are simply because of a chemical imbalance. Symptoms of depression can include weight gain/weight loss, sleeplessness or sleeping for extended periods of time, appetite changes and decreased interest in everyday activities. One way to distinguish if you are depressed is if a Starbucks can cheer you up. Yes? Then you are most likely not depressed from failing your test so please use another adjective besides depression because it is not funny.
Secondly the cutting comments. There are many reasons that people self harm. Reasons can include school pressure and parental pressures. But the worst pressure someone can have is brought on by them. People can set up so many expectations for themselves that when they fail to reach them they take the disappointment out on themselves. If someone deliberately harms themselves you may never know. It could be the head cheerleader, the point guard or the girl three lockers down from you. The point is you never know if a person self harms unless you see the scars and receive explanation. It is rude to make comments about someone cutting them self because even if they do or don’t, they have problems they’re trying to figure out and they do not need your added ignorance.
And lastly anorexia. Once again it’s not funny to joke about. Many girls and boys are just naturally thin. Telling someone they look anorexic is the same as telling some they are obese. It is never okay to identify someone’s body with what is considered negative. Everybody is aware of what their body looks like and is most likely trying to change it. Having to repeat myself, it’s just not cool to be THAT person who makes everybody feel bad about themselves.
1 in 4 people are struggling with mental illness and when you throw out words such as depressed or bipolar as feelings, it demeans the illness and allows other people to believe it is okay to use the words as adjectives. It is also not okay to self diagnose yourself just so you can appear emotionally vulnerable. No disorder or illness is glamorous and it is time we stop trying to make them seem beautiful.
