“Either way, that sucks fam. What? You’re no fun. It’s sugar, sweet, sweet sugar. How could you say no to it? Well… I know for this but like, do you not like candy?”
Tumblr media
“Because it’s never been a part of my diet and so trying to eat it now is disgusting. And no, I don’t like candy.”

"Is it too late to start thinking about next year’s Tony awards, because the pickings for this year are pretty sad if you ask me.”

Melody Douglas-Aikens knew from a young age that she was going to be a star.  At least that was what her mother always told her.  She was put in her first dance class when she was three years old, singing lessons soon followed.  Melody was brought to auditions before she could even remember. However, it was never good enough.
Sophia Aikens was always the looming presence in her life.  And there was always something that Melody was doing wrong, whether it came to her behavior, her abilities, the fact that no matter how hard she worked it never was good enough. She was always compared to Roman: the brother that she never got to meet due to what she was told was a complicated custody battle that her mother lost.  Roman never said anything he was supposed to, he was always well behaved, he was a musical prodigy. The more that she had to hear about him, the more that Melody hated him. And the more that she wanted to prove to her mother that she was the child that she needed to be most proud of.
Melody was thirteen when she landed the lead role on a Disney Channel show, and while that projected her to overnight fame, she still wasn’t sure that it was enough.  And neither did Sophia.  Melody was fourteen as she started to look for more mature side projects, determined that she wouldn’t become another joke of a Disney Channel star who couldn’t make the transition to becoming a serious force to be reckoned with without going crazy.  And while she was loved in the press, was loved by her fans, Sophia Aikens still was never anything other than disappointed.
The house became tense, with Melody lashing out at her mother’s unrealistic expectations, while her mother would fire back that she was just looking out for her career.  And while Melody knew that her father was attempting to be a peacekeeper, she knew that wasn’t going to work.  It was time to work towards a new goal.  Anyone who knew the woman knew that Sophia Aiken’s goal in life was to get an EGOT, and that she was having trouble getting the Oscar that she so desired, so Melody decided that she was going to get it first.
After all, that was a goal that could easily be achieved since Melody was willing to put in the work.
The Grammy was first, getting it when she was only 18 with the album that she made just to upset her mother.  However her win was bittersweet, just something that she needed to check off the list that she had made for herself, and next up was the Tony.  She knew that was her mother’s favorite of her awards – despite never actually being on a Broadway stage the entirety of Melody’s life. The young woman had told her agent to land her a show that was destined to be a hit, both in the box office and during awards season, and even though she had no theater experience, Melody was offered the role of Tzipporah in Prince of Egypt, a part that Melody hoped would be a wakeup call to her mother. One that showed that Melody truly was the girl always dreamed of being.  The star that Sophia always wanted to be.
And that she was never going to be in her mother’s shadow ever again.
