ā sure thing. let me give you mine, actually. āĀ Ā lucia suggests, putting pen to a star shaped post-it note.Ā she wagers, given melanieās poor frazzled nerves, that perhaps itās better she does the writing.Ā and whatās next,Ā the woman has to drive herself home?Ā no,Ā lucia will keep her sat in the chair until she calms down.Ā melanie neednāt know the con.Ā the teacher delicately places the bright yellow note atop one of the pamphlets: email paired with phone number and name (in case the woman forgets).Ā Ā ā whenever you need me. āĀ Ā lucia promises, intending to keep it.Ā fifteen weeks?Ā her gaze drops to melanieās stomach.Ā Ā āĀ oh! i had no idea! āĀ Ā her tone floodsĀ with an overwhelmingly earnest excitement.Ā lucia loves babies, if the context clues werenāt enough for you to figure it out.Ā Ā ā congratulations, melanie. i couldnāt be happier for you. āĀ Ā in fact, she even feels a little guilty.Ā Ā ā iām so sorry to drag you out of the house so late! i hear the second trimester can be exhausting, you poor thing. āĀ Ā āi hearā may more accurately be put to the tune ofĀ āiāve done my researchā.Ā Ā lucia had looked into getting a sperm donor herself, once or twice.Ā but adoption (and all the paperwork sheās filled) was shaping up to be a much better fit.
Ā Ā whichever muscle tells a right person from a wrong one,Ā a good feeling from a bad one,Ā a truth from a lie----Ā well,Ā mel is lacking.Ā it is simply not there. an optimist can justify it just needs room to grow.Ā fact still remains:Ā right now,Ā luciaās wide eyes and brilliant smile may be a guise.Ā Ā beneath a smooth and patient surface may be rough and due frustration,Ā an inner demand to get this conversation over with.Ā what iām telling you is mel is not used to talking about herself;Ā this slipper does not fit.Ā her baby,Ā Ā her susie,Ā Ā is another story entirely.Ā Ā and what lucia presents is what mel accepts.Ā itās as she always accepts.
Ā Ā Ā ā oh goodness,Ā Ā no,Ā Ā please donāt apologise.Ā Ā this has been so...Ā informative.Ā meeting you is incrediblyĀ important.Ā Ā āĀ Ā what mel gives is a smile that reaches her eyes,Ā Ā though the spotlight on her missed sleep and aches does give a huge urge to yawn,Ā now.Ā Ā Ā quickly is it shaken;Ā Ā this is professional,Ā of course.Ā but god,Ā is it so lovely to talk.Ā Ā Ā Ā āĀ do you have any children?Ā Ā āĀ Ā had she seen the cues,Ā she would know.Ā Ā but sheās not the best at that:Ā Ā seeing.

ā you donāt need to apologise, melanie. āĀ Ā lucia insists, keeping a warm hold of her wrist.Ā Ā ā this kind of information can be overwhelming to hear. āĀ Ā some of the words they had exchanged this evening had been big, scary.Ā lucia was just glad melanie had wanted to listen.Ā she gives the woman one final, gentle squeeze, before letting her go ā hands returning to sit clasped on the table between them.Ā Ā ā of course, melanie. i appreciate you coming in tonight and hearing me out. āĀ Ā the tears tug to play a sad song on luciaās heartstrings.Ā Ā ā let me give you these, to take home with you. āĀ she offers, reaching into her draw and pulling out the pamphlets.Ā Ā ā and iāll be happy to send you over my availability and hourly rates, where tutoring is concerned. if thatās something youād like to go forward with. āĀ Ā lucia will leave that door open for melanie to walk through when sheās ready.Ā but upon reflection, something in there hadnāt quite made the sense lucia wished it would. Ā āĀ iām sorry, theā¦ hormones, did you say? ā
Ā Ā damp tissue is squeezed in hand,Ā fingers finding something to do now that theyāre bare,Ā on their own again.Ā Ā āĀ of course!Ā i can give you my...Ā Ā email?Ā āĀ Ā rising intonation towards the end tells them both itās an uncertainty.Ā has she just shown her age?Ā Ā it isnāt even hers,Ā anyway.Ā Ā ( we all know whoās it is. )Ā Ā no matter.Ā distraction puts a nice end to the tears,Ā and as melanie neatly secures the documents in her bag,Ā an even better one arises.
Ā Ā Ā āĀ oh,Ā completely,Ā Ā āĀ is it the pregnancy glow or the post-crying one?Ā doesnāt matter;Ā sheās got it.Ā Ā a smile now,Ā too,Ā as a palm returns to her stomach.Ā for a month itās been public knowledge,Ā and for a month itās been on the tip of her tongue at all times.Ā Ā itās a surprise sheās held it until this point.Ā Ā āĀ fifteen weeks now.Ā the mood swings are just reminders sheās there.Ā Ā thatās what my mum says,Ā Ā at least.Ā Ā ā

she feels a sharp pang of sympathyĀ as melanieās head drops into her hands.Ā but make no mistake: this is the better outcome by far.Ā lucia is sat across from a mother who loved her son, that much is clear.Ā the concern she displays for his sake is shockingly earnestĀ ā so much so that it coaxes an ounce of guilt of of lucia, for expecting any less.Ā then again, she certainly could not have predicted melanie.Ā Ā ā tutoring, yes.Ā āĀ Ā she repeats for clarityās sake, when the woman reappears.Ā lucia repositions the tissue box on her desk, placing it gently within melanieās reach.Ā Ā āĀ and iād be happy to do it. āĀ Ā sheāll charge aā¦ small fee, naturally.Ā but those are details for another time.Ā lucia scoots further forward in her chair, amongst the heartfelt pleas.Ā when one of melanieās hands drops below the table, lucia reaches naturally forward to take the other: her hand landing warmly on the womanās wrist.Ā Ā
āĀ of course youāre a good mother, melanie. āĀ Ā lucia can speak to that, even from their brief interaction.Ā mother, not parents.Ā the omission is accidental.Ā Ā ā no-one is in trouble here. not you, and certainly not josh. kids justā¦ need a little help, sometimes. everyone does. in fact, it quite often happens to the best of us.Ā āĀ Ā there had been plenty of instances where lucia had needed a helping hand.Ā Ā she would offer hers, now, where she had never been given one herself.
Ā Ā touch like this is foreign;Ā Ā it feels tender and of heart.Ā Ā lucia wears a soft hand and mel likes the way it sits;Ā itās on hers.Ā her starvation grows no words,Ā but it dictates a gaze that is just pressed,Ā entirely,Ā by the hold.Ā Ā it simply is.Ā when eyes do straggle,Ā luciaās part way through her words---Ā who are each just as supportive,Ā of course.Ā Ā help?Ā well...Ā Ā itās a quick and easy thing to offer.Ā but to accept?Ā it isnāt the giverās wayĀ to receive.Ā itās not familiar.Ā focus deviates to the box of tissues,Ā placed in her direct path.Ā how did lucia know?Ā itās too much to deny now,Ā those which wish to spill,Ā and melās never been good at holding back tears.Ā she can hold back the rest of it,Ā though-Ā the stuff that needs words.Ā thatās easy.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āĀ iām so sorry,Ā āĀ Ā hurriedly,Ā the mother not yet of three tugs tissues like holding a personal vendetta.Ā Ā dabbing her eyes,Ā like she didnāt do this just to hide her face.Ā Ā ā youāre terribly kind and---Ā itās the hormones,Ā is what it is...Ā Ā what i mean is--- thank you,Ā lucia.ā

the spirit is willing.Ā this is a good enough start, for lucia.Ā relief relaxes her briefly concerned features:Ā making return to a smile.Ā Ā ā well, thereās a few different places we can start. i can send you home with some reading that might explain things a little more thoroughly than i can tonight. āĀ Ā lucia knows this is information that needs time to sink in.Ā the pamphlets sitting in her desk draw will hopefully find themselves put to good use.Ā her fingers knot, chin rested delicately atop.Ā Ā ā in the meantime ā¦ i would encourage you to spend some time with your son. perhaps bring up with him some of the topics weāve discussed this evening. āĀ Ā she then adds, with weighted importance:Ā Ā ā these are issues your husband should be aware of, as well. āĀ Ā lucia had hoped to be able to tell him as much herself, but alas.Ā Ā ā you may be recognising josh exhibiting these behaviours in the home, as well. āĀ Ā in the homeĀ is a topic lucia would like further insight on, but she warns herself not to push boundaries.Ā Ā āĀ as far as his academic performance is concerned, i believe josh could benefit from tutoring. iād like to see him catch up with his peers, with any luck, before winter break. āĀ Ā is it ambitious?Ā slightly.Ā but thatās lucia for you.Ā Ā ā i can make my time available for extra lessons in the evenings, if thatās something youād be interested in. ā
Ā Ā Ā matt?Ā Ā oh god.Ā sheāll have to dress this wound again,Ā with matt?Ā as lucia speaks,Ā mel has a moment of head in hands,Ā Ā a brief dig through strawberry blonde to their roots.Ā none more than a few seconds and she returns,Ā fingers holding up her chin,Ā eyes teary but none spilled.Ā Ā she feels like the body dragged by šššš.Ā a pessimistic take.Ā but,Ā still,Ā thereās hope isnāt there?
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āĀ his grades, too ?Ā Ā āĀ Ā oh boy.Ā sheāll have to detour to the chemist on the way home,Ā aid the migraine before it begins.Ā Ā the teacher is filled with remedies,Ā though,Ā spoken in a casual confidence mel hasnāt exercised--- with anything,Ā ever.Ā Ā it means sheās attached with concentrated frown and full trust.Ā Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā āĀ i would be ...Ā Ā you have no idea howĀ grateful.Ā Ā for the pamphlets,Ā too,Ā but iāmĀ ----Ā iām referring to the tutoring,Ā is this what youāre suggesting?Ā Ā āĀ it clearly is,Ā but mel is nothing if not a double checking mechanism.Ā Ā besides,Ā thereās barely a second to breathe in.Ā Ā
Ā Ā ā ---- we must look terrible.Ā matt and i.Ā from the cancellations,Ā to the...Ā to this!Ā Ā i had no idea things were so bad...Ā Ā he teases his sister---Ā but i thought it was just a boy thing.Ā weāre good parents.Ā and we adore our children.Ā āĀ Ā subconscious hand holds her stomach.Ā Ā susie is not yet born,Ā but must feel her love.Ā she must.Ā Ā paranoia creeps. " this doesn't... i don't know, go on his school record, does it? " will that impact university? he's ten, for christ sake!

@melaniemillsĀ·
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā As Jane Austen once wrote, it is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune an anxious disposition,Ā must be in want of a wifeĀ 7 business days notice before social interaction of ANY shape takes place ā or words to that effect. No such notice has materialised today, a fact Kai is all too aware of as he perches gingerly on the edge of his sofa, hands clasped on one knee, white-knuckled, shooting awkward smiles at Mel on the chair opposite ā all while his gaze continuously strays to the clock. The concept of time is of little consequence to AgnĆØs Winterson; the concept of respecting her father even less so. Kai canāt imagine sheāll be home any time soon; heās grown accustomed to waiting up ā reheating dinners, turning a blind eye to the hours as they tick by, keeping panicked texts to a minimum ā but this is different. She can no longer be a lady of leisure when Jasmine Mills is in tow; accountability, a word he doubts is even in AgnĆØsā vocabulary, becomes A Thing when thereās another parent to answer to. Kai lets it slide;Ā he always lets it bloody slide, but if this is the alternative ā painting on an excruciatingly uncomfortable smile and grasping for something, anything, to say to Melanie Mills ā perhaps heāll be stricter in the future.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āSoā¦āĀ Ā The word is a road that leads nowhere āĀ trailing off at the tail-end, lapsing into another silence. Hands readjust. Unclasping. Reclasping. Itās easier to talk to Matt, heās decided, presumably because itās less of a conversation and more Matt just pontificating in his general direction (Ā Ā perhaps people would be put off by that, someone adoring the sound of their own voice so much that nobody else can get a word in, but not having to speak is a real boon for Kai.Ā Ā )
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āHow about this weatherĀ ? SoĀ unpredictable, rightĀ ?ā
Ā Ā Ā melanie wonders what she did to deserve this.
Ā Ā a fist fill of sky-blue dress skirt,Ā Ā eyes that float from watch to clock to kai,Ā in rotation similar to the torture wheel.Ā only thereās no executioner here;Ā two parents sit like prisoners.Ā Ā no release.Ā Ā kai almost has it,Ā Ā a word which is more a standalone syllable.Ā Ā so....Ā Ā Ā so, what!Ā mel would like something to work with,Ā Ā mouth opening to echo the sound.Ā only it shuts.Ā Ā then opens.Ā then shuts.
Ā Ā Ā it appears mel cannot remain graceful in the company of men.Ā Ā women?Ā Ā this is the language she knows.Ā of wifehood,Ā Ā of thermomixes, of the controversial readings in josephineās class that brighten her cheeks red.Ā ( a class of sixteen year olds should not be privy to holden caulfieldās perversion,Ā if you were wondering. )
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āĀ Ā SO unpredictable, rightĀ !!Ā āĀ Ā so yearning to connect,Ā she forgets to consider her own opinion on the matter,Ā latching on to his and camouflaging it as hers.Ā she does it exceptionally well,Ā at least.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āĀ itās supposed to rain next week,Ā ugh.Ā Ā not on the weekend,Ā though,Ā thank god...Ā are you doing that hike with matt?Ā i think he mentioned you were going...Ā āĀ Ā or was it neil?Ā Ā lucas?Ā Ā itās hard to keep up,Ā Ā but mel likes to pretend she does.Ā Ā just like she pretends this conversation isnāt stale.Ā Ā keep up,Ā mel!!Ā Ā just five minutes longer.

ā if thatās the word youād like to use, thenā¦ yes. iām afraid i am. āĀ Ā lucia tends to shy away from more disparaging labels, but the term isnāt inaccurate.Ā she watches the distress flood melanieās features, and takes the opportunity to let the woman sit with the idea for a moment before continuing.Ā Ā ā josh is still young. this kind of behaviour isnāt out of the ordinary, but it is cause for concern. i know - as iām sure you do - heās not a bad kid. heās justā¦ having trouble.Ā āĀ Ā she will extend that much, as far as reassurances go.Ā Ā ā which is why iām so glad youāre here, melanie. āĀ Ā lucia pivots immediately towards solution, in the hopes the womanās confusion wonāt turn to anger.Ā the sweetest of mothers may surprise you.Ā Ā ā these are things we can work on. together, i hope.Ā ā
Ā Ā thereās the urge to burst out something inappropriate.Ā like an excuse.Ā Ā like,Ā maāam,Ā are you aware joshua attends church every sunday without falter?Ā ( kicking and screaming,Ā omission wouldnāt tell. )Ā Ā itās resisted;Ā melanie opts to smooth the skirt of her dress instead,Ā Ā fingers crossed in her lap.Ā Ā in her silence,Ā shame brightens her cheeks and drops her gaze.Ā Ā it can only be something melanie did wrong.Ā sheās his mother.Ā and yet,Ā you wouldnāt believe the skill she brings to holding her tongue when itās on fire.Ā one hand cannot count the amount of times sheās lost her temper with him,Ā because it hasnāt been enough.Ā Ā tonight mel can toss and turn,Ā ripping her hair out in the name of a cause,Ā a reason for this.Ā Ā
Ā Ā but right here and now,Ā behind a desk,Ā lucia offers a solution.Ā Ā rather,Ā the promise of one.Ā melās gaze shoots back up to where it belongs,Ā Ā leaning forward in posture that mirrorsĀ luciaās.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āĀ Ā yes,Ā of course.Ā of course !Ā Ā what do i do?Ā ā

ā i donāt mean to alarm you, melanie. āĀ Ā she will begin with that, in response to the womanās furrowed brow.Ā but lucia must tell her the truth, however worrisome it may be.Ā Ā ā but i have noticed some behaviour in josh that concerns me. āĀ Ā the list is longer than either of them will like.Ā Ā ā he has a lot of friends, which ā is good! of course. and he seems very interested in making them laugh. but ā¦Ā itās often at the expense of the other children. josh can be ā¦ he can be quite mean, melanie. and thatās not the kind of behaviour that i accept in my classroom. āĀ Ā luciaās elbows meet the desk, leaning in to the conversation.Ā Ā ā outside of that, well ā he never has his homework done, of course. and i try to be lenient with that kind of thing, but itās everyday, now. and inĀ class, well he just canāt sit still ā even when he tries, which i think he does, sometimes. these may be symptoms of something, or a byproduct of his life at home. i canāt say for sure, and iām certainly no doctor. āĀ Ā she draws breath, finally.Ā Ā ā but ā¦ i am someone who has been doing this job for a long time. and iām pretty good at it, to tell you the truth. āĀ Ā lucia is wary such information may be received as an attack, which is a confrontation sheād like to avoid.Ā her voice drops, holding the woman in more quiet conversation.Ā Ā ā melanie, as joshās teacher ā¦ these are things that worry me.Ā and as his mother, i think they should worry you, too.Ā ā
Ā Ā it feels like a confrontation.Ā her body seizes up like it is;Ā some verbal attack on her son.Ā calling him josh when it should be joshua;Ā she isnāt his friend,Ā and it feels disrespectful when it justĀ didnāt three minutes ago.Ā miss flores came prepared for the onslaught.Ā does she have a list?Ā something physical mel can crush in her hands and denounce with frozen smile?Ā because each thing is mentioned,Ā and for each itās hard for mel to keep a grasp.Ā the mind does funny things under stress,Ā Ā like choosing not to process the bad.Ā all it tells her,Ā once lucia has finished with a hell of an introduction,Ā is that this isnāt good.Ā this is not good.Ā Ā that general feel,Ā Ā and one accusation that stood out like a splinter,Ā festering.
Ā Ā Ā Ā ā did you just--- ... are you...Ā calling my son a bully?Ā āĀ Ā mel blinks.Ā the shock of it stuck,Ā still;Ā a broken clock whose hands point only to one moment.

āĀ well, melanie suits you. itās very charming. āĀ Ā she compliments, in earnest.Ā call it a habit, and perhaps the reason lucia keeps so many friends.Ā good things deserved to be spoken into the world, she tells her students as well as herself.Ā she takes her regular seat across from the woman, happy to follow her lead into business.Ā lucia has a tendency to linger in places she shouldnāt.Ā Ā ā of course. josh is one of my more ā¦ creative students, i hope youāll be happy to hear. āĀ Ā lucia will begin on the most positive note she can.Ā Ā ā heās very imaginative. and when heās able to put those thoughts on the page, theyāre fantastic. but ā¦ āĀ Ā and there is aĀ ābutā, unfortunately.Ā lucia makes an opening attempt at delicacy.Ā Ā ā there are ā¦ a few reasons i wasĀ so eager to speak to you, melanie. ā
Ā Ā ... charming?Ā Ā were it written,Ā melanie would underline it right now.Ā Ā in red.Ā maybe even circled,Ā too.Ā because charming isnāt the word to describe anything about this woman.Ā once,Ā perhaps.Ā today clumsy is better suited.Ā Ā muddled.Ā Ā ā well...Ā thank you!Ā whatever youād like to call me is... just fine with me.Ā āĀ Ā now that melanieās been said aloud for...Ā only god knows how long...Ā well,Ā she quite likes the sound of it.Ā but again.Ā there are important matters,Ā here.Ā Ā
Ā Ā Ā āĀ oh,Ā he is,Ā isnāt he?Ā Ā āĀ his creativity is something sheās noticed herself.Ā jasmine pleaded for bedtime stories too,Ā but nothing compared to the younger mills,Ā all stompy-feet and enormous-noise.Ā mel gave in so willingly of course,Ā fingers in tresses while the dribble wets his pillow,Ā snores sounding softly.Ā Ā he asked less,Ā then none,Ā but mel has found scribbled stories shoved under his mattress.Ā yes,Ā Ā she has looked--- and does.Ā Ā itās just what mothers do.
Ā Ā Ā itās easy to admit him creative.Ā less-so the rest...
Ā Ā Ā āĀ Ā i ----Ā Ā okay,Ā Ā is he-----Ā what is the-----Ā Ā ....Ā Ā āĀ Ā upĀ ān down brows further demonstrate the turmoil,Ā here.Ā Ā melanie takes a rounded breath.Ā Ā ā what would you like to say?Ā āĀ Ā Ā it might not be bad.Ā who says it has to be bad?

ā well, mel, iām glad youāre here now.Ā āĀ Ā lucia canāt bring herself to chastise the woman for rescheduling āĀ her apology arriving in such earnestly wrapped sentiment.Ā and she arrives this evening alone.Ā how unfortunate.Ā Ā ā oh! thatās a shame. no, no itās alright. i understand. āĀ lucia will not ring her hands over things that canāt be changed.Ā and besides, mrs mills seems like terribly agreeable company.Ā perhaps a mother might be easier to appeal to about her sonās behaviour, than a hypothetical father would be (as was often the case).Ā but there was plenty of time for that.Ā Ā ā come on in. āĀ Ā lucia beckoned, holding the door open for her and welcoming her into the class.Ā the comfiest chair she could find was parked opposite her own desk at the front of the room, allowing them to sit face to face.Ā Ā ā mel ā¦ is that short for melanie? āĀ Ā she remarks, curiously.Ā āmelā was a nice enough name, but it didnāt do the woman justice.Ā lucia would have picked something much prettier, herself.
Ā Ā lucia leads and melanie follows.Ā it isnāt with silence;Ā two women have plenty to say to one another,Ā none of it just noise.Ā the mother is quick to notice the teacherās polite fashion;Ā they are a rare breed,Ā Ā yet two of them share the same room and gaze.Ā Ā Ā ā thatās correct !Ā Ā āĀ the round eyes of surprise,Ā tall brows.Ā Ā ā most guess melinda,Ā melissa...Ā even melrose,Ā would you believe?Ā Ā āĀ despite the free-fallen laughter and the chairās comfortable cushion,Ā Ā the guest in this house sits straight.Ā mel reminds herself what sheās here for...Ā Ā that itās not nonsense about her name.Ā Ā
Ā Ā Ā ā anyway,Ā Ā my son,Ā joshua.Ā iād love to hear what you have to say about him.Ā Ā āĀ Ā does she?Ā sudden is the urge to return to the small talk,Ā Ā far away from the problems that exist in her boy.

ā right on time. āĀ Ā lucia assures her, without needing to check.Ā honestly, sheās just relieved the woman has made an appearance at all.Ā Ā ā thrilled to finally meet you. and please, call me lucia. āĀ Ā theĀ āfinallyā might have felt like a subtle dig, if anyone else had said it.Ā Ā but from luciaās lips, it only sounds sweet.Ā the meets the womanās hand to shake it, holding her gaze with warm intent.Ā Ā āĀ ā should we ā¦ wait until your husband arrives, to begin? āĀ Ā she suggests, peering expectantly over melanieās shoulder down the hall:Ā still waiting for her partner to make his entrance.Ā Ā she always asked for both parents for these kind of things, if at all possible.Ā lucia found meeting her studentsā parents endlessly insightful.Ā to look at his mother (for one example), she can see where joshua gets his brilliant smile.
Ā Ā a weight she didnāt know was thereĀ has left the shoulders;Ā this woman is kind,Ā itās something mel just knows already.Ā detail of joshuaās hiccups will soften the blows of truth,Ā Ā their words coated in honey.Ā Ā ā and all the same to you,Ā lucia.Ā you can call me mel.Ā Ā and iām so sorry about all those darn reschedules.Ā āĀ the mention of her husbandās vacancy dampers nothing.Ā when the teacher peers over her shoulder,Ā mel does not.Ā there wonāt be a sudden show,Ā because there never is.Ā there was a time the reality of it dropped smiles and eyes.Ā not anymore.Ā Ā ā oh,Ā iām afraid he couldnāt make it tonight---Ā a last minute work thing.Ā this isnāt going to be a problem, is it?Ā āĀ Ā
