I woke up to a dream, hung my feet in the flames. I saw things no man should ever see. I was fallin’ in love, or at least thought I was. All along, I’ve been lost in some velvet dream.

The crop tops were such a challenge. The one from the hotel scene was actually an old tablecloth, like an old crocheted tablecloth that I cut up. In terms of how I imagined that she procured her clothes, Penny Lane wasn’t really the vintage character.
I also made her some handmade velvet bell-bottoms that had a slightly higher waist. I wanted the waist line to be a little bit above a mid-rise so that when she wears a crop top, you don’t have that much midriff, but just enough. You know, she’s so tiny on top. You were able to almost just put a strip of fabric across the top of her.
- Betsy Heimann on creating Penny Lane’s Costume in Almost Famous (2000)
