"I never have," River started and then stopped. "There was one time. I was 15 and one of the foster kids I was staying with tried to touch me. I got a fork and I started stabbing him." Her eyes seem to get a little fuzzy. Then she can see the whole scene before her from her teenage eyes.

She was in the dirty foster home, one of many that she had been in when she was in the system. She always would go in and out of homes, group homes, and hospitals. By the time she was ten years old she was marked down as a special needs child because of repeated trips to the psychiatric hospitals. Every time she went to the hospital she stayed at least a month before she was let back out.

Each home was worst than the first because people got paid more for taking kids like her. This boy had tried to grab at her chest, he had been making fun of her because she was so small busted compared to one of other girls that was staying there, the other girl was also fatter too. River always saw her sneaking extra food which meant the rest of them got less.

They were all around the dinner table when he tried to grab at her. She picked up the fork and just stabbed him in the thigh. Then she took the fork out and stabbed him in the other thigh. She kept doing it over and over until one of the adults grabbed her and threw her against the wall. She went back to the hospital that night.

"I tried to make it right but they stopped me," she finally said with a frown. "They shouldn't have stopped me. He was a bad boy, he did bad things."

She was keeping herself focused, not allowing herself to lose the thread with which this entire conversation was hanging on. Loose and frayed he understood that he had it there in his hands to mend it and make it work again. She was, after all, someone that he could help.

A slow shake of his head was given as he leaned forward so as to look into her eyes better. “That is something that must not be feared. The lack of remorse is the knowledge that you are doing the right thing for yourself. Do you feel, River, as if you were doing the right thing?”

"I was hoping to get information about string theory and physical cosmology loaded on to my PADD. I really find both topics fascinating but since I've been living on the transport I have not had much time to read about them. I'd like to try to see if there were any new developments," River smiled and handed the PADD over to Erika.

She could see in Erika's mind how was putting the pieces together that River was not from this time or place. It was a difficult conversation to have with anyone, especially since the whole thing seemed so unbelievable. Before she finally confessed to Erika she wanted to read and see if there was any way for her to get back home. Even though she promised Erika that she would not stay up all night reading she knew that she would stay up part of the night at least.

River looked at the strange looking man. He was short, well shorter than she was. His hair was odd to her as well and his clothes were very bright. His thoughts were kind though. He seemed excited to see a new person and was walking over to her. River stayed where she was but still kept reading his thoughts. She saw his memories but kept them to herself. She knew that it was rude just to say someone's thoughts out loud. "Hello," she said quietly.

River found him, she always found him. He worried for her and he didn't need to. She was the only one that he trusted. When she had first come to this world he was one of the only people that she could be around. They had both killed together. She was used to killing people. She had even beat up and killed people without knowing it because of the fact that she had been programmed. Just like he was.

"You can't leave Jason," she said softly when she was finally close enough for him to hear her. "I know it is hard but it will only get worse if you leave. What if they find you? Then they will use you. I know you don't want that to happen. We need to stay together. It is safest."

Jason was sitting in his usual spot, he’d killed a man today. Someone read his number and he was off. He tore apart the man in the cruelest way possible and he doesn’t even remember it. His friend, the man who ended up restraining him told him the story of what happened. They managed to get him back to his normal self.

As soon as it was over he ran, he didn’t grab his bag he just ran to the river, ironically to get away from River. He was a danger not only to himself but to her. He couldn’t trust himself around her. Not anymore. It was time to leave.
