A Fresh Start

So as you may already be aware…we were broken into a couple of weeks ago, with eBikes stolen and some damaged. This made us feels sick to the stomach as we have put in a lot of hard work over the last two years since launching Ride Electric, and someone tries to spoil it all…

Well, we are much stronger than them and will continue to do what we do best, and that is to succeed. We have, however, had to make a few changes, but for the better.

We have tidied our HQ up, making more of a warm, beautiful showroom with more space. You can help yourself to coffee and all the brochures that are on display, asking us any questions on eBikes that you like.

Not many people know what we do and assume we are just a bike shop. We aren’t.  We do things differently to all other traditional bicycle shops. Not only do we deliver the best possible customer service to our everyday customers, meaning you (the public), but we also engage, partner up and work with councils, businesses, business parks, health care trusts and delivery companies to provide solutions to them improving their carbon footprint, sustainability and changing the culture of commuters from the top down.

To help us build our partnerships, our HQ will be closed from 9-1 Mon to Friday, where we will only meet with you via an appointment only (see below for bookings). After 1pm and all day Saturday & Sundays, our door will be open for you just drop in and have a look around.

Wallington Hall Bike Hire

Wallington Hall is an elegant 17th-century mansion, built by Sir William Blackett around the core of an earlier medieval house and pele tower. Blackett was a wealthy shipping magnate and mine owner from Newcastle, and he intended Wallington to be a country retreat, a place to hold occasional shooting parties, but it evolved into much more than that.Today, it is managed by National Trust, and is a very popular visitor location, attracting people to the historic house and ancient pele tower, connected by wonderful gardens and pathways. Overview of eBikes as a concept and transport

Introduction to the eBike and preparation for the ride

Guided tour around the region to feel the difference an eBike makes, and to take in points of interest along the way. Terrain will be varied and take attendees on routes they probably have never been to.

Debrief on return and perception gathering, and a Ride Electric goodie bag.

Refreshments provided on arrival, eBike hire provision, video and still photography, f.o.c. Metro ticket & f.o.c. and an eBike for the employer to share to staff for 1 week.

Electric Bike Touring The Netherlands?

I’ve just completed a three-week tour of the Netherlands. Magical and such an uncomplicated and enjoyable trip. I cycled from my house to DFDS ferry in North Shields, fully loaded and prepared with a tent, cooking gear, food, sleeping bag, mobile phone external battery and bravado. Had a great dinner on board, nice sleep, woke up in Ijumdien and cycled off for the first leg on the North Sea cycle route.

People invariably laugh at the idea of cycling in the Netherlands – it’s so FLAT they say. Seems like a bit of a sissy cycling holiday. But on the first day, with the Dutch mountains rising hard ahead (the wind in face) and with a full load, it’s not so easy, or at least it wasn’t for me on my super slick bike with road tyres and light frame. I was in first gear pushing hard and aching with it.

Just before I left I was at the Fish Quay and I met a lovely ex-Whitley Bay woman who was hiring a touring ‘e bike’ from Craig and she had plans to zip around the north of England. She was so nice I suggested she come with me for a bit. Annette and I ended up spending two weeks discovering the wonder of the well-routed ‘green’ cycle paths through villages and forests, stopping off at art galleries and camping in ‘mini-camps’, farm stays and ‘nature parks’. She met me on the second day of the trip. She had a Scott e-touring bike, also fully loaded with tent and gear. Her bike was much heavier than mine because of the battery, but with all the camping equipment we were not different at all weight-wise but oh my were we cycling under different conditions.

In the Dutch mountains, Annette was whistling a happy tune in ‘eco-mode’ and enjoying the scenery. I wasn’t.

When we set off together, I was not sure it would work. I’ve cycled with others before who weren’t the pushy ‘I’m going to wipe myself out’ types. I push myself, I don’t enjoy going slow. I’d told Annette that this was the case and that if it didn’t work we could go our own way and she was fine about it. But it did work; and over the course of the following few weeks we heard many similar stories from others – the lovers who cycled together with blokey bloke busting his gut and non-cycle fanatic partner tootling along with him (and the other way around); the older couple off on a trip with their young enthusiastic chatty teenage grandson; the retired gent who just came along with me for a bit because he had time (and an e bike). The thing I realised is that e-bikes make cycling with others enjoyable and fun – whatever the fitness and strength and Hutz-pa level. But there was more to it than that.

About one-third of the Netherlands is below sea-level, keeping the flood water out and creating ‘new land’ through reclamation has resulted in a complex and fascinating system of dykes, sand-dunes and water management systems unparalleled anywhere in the world. One of our first-week encounters was the Afsluitdijk (dyke), built in the 1930’s to contain the North Sea. With the wind in your face, it’s a very long 30km (particularly after an already long day in the saddle, and frustratingly knowing that the best campsite is at the other end).

Despite my ‘legs’ wanting to work, I’m nowhere near tour de France experience and it proved challenging – until Annette cycled off ahead and provided a slip-stream that made the dyke a whole lot easier to cross. On several long days, she rescued me when I was flailing.

This ‘commensal’ experience is one of the key benefits of electric bikes for me. I’ve ridden a lot with different people over the years but often end up riding with people who cycle at the same cadence and speed. Electric bikes make cycling with others so much more enjoyable. And the Netherlands is so well set up for a cycling holiday – traffic free cities and tracks, camping or bike huts, e-bikes or not. And I can’t not mention the stroopwaffles and apple cake.

The other benefit, of course, is when you don’t have the legs you once did. Lots of comments on my facebook posts about the trip whereof this ilk. ‘I’ll get one when I get older’, ‘my mother has one and she loves it’, ‘fred had to give up cycling but he could do it again with an e-bike’. As we were touring we met lots of older people on e-bikes. There were news stories about the increase in cycling accidents when people who hadn’t ridden bikes for a while found themselves racing along at 25km an hour and couldn’t quite handle the speed. Good caution for doing some training before heading out. But there is something else to consider here for me.

I live 12 miles from work. I do cycle to work, but not every day. It’s just too much time and effort. If its rainy or windy, it’s really not the most pleasurable experience. If I had an e bike I wouldn’t need to worry. With four modes available (eco, tour, sport and turbo) I can choose what level of effort I want, how fast I want to get there, and it’s quicker than metro door to door. Riding to Newcastle from the coast is a bit long for a regular commute for me on my current bike. So I pay for transport, I have a car. I’ve calculated the cost savings – it makes sense to ditch the car for an e-bike and with the savings, I could have a cycling holiday in the Netherlands every year.

eBike Tour – Royal Quays to Blyth

Ride Electric e Bike Tours offer an enjoyable approach to visiting a region with e Bikes. We have prepared a range of guided rides which make it possible to reach sites of scenic and cultural interest that would be too difficult, or too distant, to access on foot.This approximately three-hour excursion around the historic coastal area north of the Tyne will start and finish at The Lock a wonderful restaurant at the Albert Edward Dock Royal Quays Marina in North Shields.  You will take in 1,000 years of history in a trip along the riverfront following a route along the coast, through a dune path to Blyth South Beach, visiting St Mary’s Lighthouse, Collingwood’s Monument, the museum of the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade, Tynemouth Castle & Priory and Cullercoats village along the way.  You will finish with a refreshment stop at The Lock and enjoy the wonderful hospitality on offer. Surface and terrain This route combines roads without traffic and paved paths.  The tour will feature a few short steeper hills which you will easily scale with your eBike. Prices Our tours offer excellent value for money, interesting, educational and are really great fun!  The tours may be customised to suit your own choice of route or number of riders. We include a short familiarisation session to help you with the operation of your eBike.  There is no need to wear special clothing – we provide helmets and warm, waterproof clothing as required. A life changing purchase…

After a great deal of research into e bikes I made contact with Craig at Ride Electric in North Shields and arranged a test ride. It was a great experience and after a friendly chat with the very knowledgeable Craig, I was convinced that I wanted an e bike.  

His friendly advice and no-pressure salesmanship was first-rate and shortly afterwards I arranged for my wife to have a test ride. She too was immediately taken with the experience and we very quickly ordered two Bergamont E-Horizon models. 

Delivery and service were excellent and we could not wait to give them a full test with a 25-mile ride around the River Tyne. As older experienced cyclists we soon found that our new e-bikes brought a new dimension to cycling and they have definitely given us a new enthusiasm for enjoying pedalling together. 

The big test came with a recent visit to the Lake District where we tackled a challenging  36-mile circular route around Blencathra and Skiddaw and found the performance of the bikes faultless.

Transporting them by car was simple. With a quick removal of the front wheel and turning the handlebars flat, they fit easily into our Audi Q3 with plenty of room left for luggage. For security, we have invested in two excellent Kryptonite shackle locks. Not cheap, not light but very effective.

We can certainly recommend Ride Electric to anyone thinking of trying, buying or hiring an e bike. Go electric, go further, go longer and keep on cycling with a little help from your new e-friend!

Gateshead Council Cycle to Work Day

To showcase the National Cycle to Work Day, Gateshead Council are hosting an experience day with Ride Electric.In addition to having a go of an electric bike free of charge, we will be providing the opportunity for staff to go from the Civic Centre on an electric bike down towards the quayside where we will endeavour to incorporate a visit to the Great Exhibition of the North Fountain.  This will be a really pleasant trip with your colleagues and also let you experience the the benefit of an eBike on the return journey up the hill from the river! Why will cargo eBikes revolutionise day to day life?

Fact. In a stop and start city, an average mpg across the UK is 28.225mpg. For a ten mile trip that will cost you £1.87. Now replace a car with an eBike, that will cost you 20p for 70 miles with a 400wh battery. That’s 2.9p for ten miles, 96.67% cheaper on an electric bike.

Fact. Conventional gasoline vehicles only convert about 17%–21% of the energy stored in gasoline to power at the wheels. Whereas an electric car converts 59-62% efficient. Putting that in perspective, car engines have been developing for over a century and the best they can come up with is 41% efficiency. Electric cars as we know them have been developing nearly half as long. They are getting more and more efficient each year too. The same goes for the eBike.

In an age of co2 emissions, melting ice caps, the efficiency of electricity is needed to convert as much electrical energy as possible into moving forward.

Enter the cargo e Bike.

Cargo e Bikes are essentially a conventional e Bike with a considerably longer wheelbase and complex steering linkage (much like a car). Thanks to this increased wheelbase it allows for cargo to be stored and transported in the centre of the bike, making the bike handle incredibly stable.

e Bikes at Northumbria Emergency Care Hospital
