Grow and Be Like the Molave
“Grow and Be Like The Molave” is a public speech delivered by the first President of the Philippine Commonwealth Manuel Quezon during his address in August 19, 1938, which he compared the Filipino people to the molave tree and lift up the people’s courage to become vigorous, strong, resilient, and staunch. The bottom line of the speech is the lesson that reminds not only Filipino people to be vigorous at life’s problems. Stand up for your nation. Be patriotic. A sense of love own country makes the country exists.
Manuel L. Quezon
youtube
Manuel Luis Quezon was born on August 19, 1878 in Baler, Tayabas (now Quezon), to Lucio Quezon, a native of Paco, Manila and Maria Dolores Molina. He studied law at the University of Sto. Tomas and passed the bar examinations in 1903.  He became the fiscal of his home province and was soon elected governor. In the 1907 election, he ran for the Philippine Assembly under the Nacionalista Party, won by a large majority, and became the majority floor leader.
In 1909, he was elected Resident Commissioner to Washington, D.C., a post he held until 1916.  His most significant achievement was the passage of the Jones Act that provided for the grant of Philippine independence. He was elected senator in 1916 and eventually became Senate President.  He headed the first Independence Mission to the U.S. Congress, and brought home the Tydings-McDuffie Independence Law in 1934.
The “ Star of Baler “ shone as the First President of the Commonwealth after his brilliant performance as the First Senate President.  He was steadfast in his vision to deliver the masses from the shackles of colonialism which intensified his efforts to secure independence for his country.  Such vision culminated in the establishment of political stability within the framework of the 1935 Constitution, the formulation of policies to ensure the social well-being of the people, and the adjustment of the national economy to the challenges of independent nationhood.  He was a dynamic Filipino leader and a true friend of the poor and the oppressed whom he loved and cared so well.  Quezon is one of the most illustrious sons our country has ever produced.
Quezon was married to Aurora Aragon and had four children.  He died on August 1, 1944 in Saranac Lake, New York.
Speech : Grow and Be Like the Molave

National strength can only be built on character. A nation is nothing more or less than its citizenry, it is the people that make up the nation, therefore, I cannot be strong than its component parts. Their weakness is its failing, their strength is of men and women healthy in mind and body; courteous, brave, industrious, self-reliant, purposeful in thought as well as in action, imbued with sound patriotism and a profound sense of righteousness, with high social ideals and strong moral fiber and I will show you a nation that will not be submerged. A nation that will emerge victorious from the trials and bitter strife of a distracted world. A nation that will forever, sharing the common task of advancing the welfare and promoting the happiness of mankind.
The upward climb of mankind has been universal. In the human landscape, there are peaks and valleys and deep chasms. Generally there is need of patent social upheaval volcanic in proportions to raise the lower levels to great heights.
The battle for existence and survival of the fittest is ever the rule of life in nature and among men.
Our task – it is heroic task to awaken and apply these faculties so that our people should become what of right they should be; morally virile, hardworking, refined, enterprising, persevering, public-spirited.
I want our people to grow and be like the molave, strong and resilient, rising in the hillside, unafraid of the raging flood, the lightning or the storm, confident of its own strength. If we have the will to survive and the will to achieve social efficiency, we cannot deny this task of spiritual revival. Let us begin now to mold the typical Filipino.
We are Oriental. Orientals are known for their placidity and passivity. In the world of humanity we are looked upon as a quiet and smooth lake from which th adventurous and enterprising may reap enjoyment and gain. I refuse to allow the Filipinos to be so regarded.
We shall be a flowing stream, a rippling brook, a deep and roaring torrent, full of life, of hope, of faith, and of strength. Through self-discipline we shall harness all our energies so that our power, spreading over the length and breadth of this land will develop its resources, advance its culture, secure social justice, give puissance to the nation and insure happiness and contentment for all the people under the aegis of liberty and peace.
Aspect of the Speech
The Best of the Filipino Values
Tumblr media
The Philippines is called the “Pearl of the Orient”, “Land of Promise” and the “Only Catholic Nation in the Orient.” It is a nation respected in world councils. Filipinos must take pride in this. The former Secretary of Education, Dr. Alejandro Roces, affirmed before the United Nations that Philippines culture, far from being damaged and weak is alive and well.
Dr. Roces also demonstrated the resiliency, adaptability and strength of our Filipino culture by affirming that our culture is unique blend of East and West. We have imbided the best of both worlds. San Miguel Corporation series of advertisements called “Manalig sa Filipino” demonstrates the Filipino values of cleanliness in this Ad- “Sa kalinisan maasahan si Juan: Si Juan Masipag lagi na lang kumakayod. Iniintindi pati ang kalinisan. Ganyan ang tunay na Pilipino. Mahalaga sa kanya ang kalinisan at kaayusan ng sarili at kapaligiran. Ginagamit ang likas na sipag sa pag-linis at pag-ayos. Ganyan si Juan Masipag. Ang tunay na Pilipino.”
The Filipino is matibay, malakas, matipid, makisig at maganda.” In fact, ‘Ang dalagang Filipina parang tala sa umaga, kung tanawin ay nakakligaya, may ningning na tangi at dakilang ganda.” Deedee Siytangco wrote that it is a Filipino tradition that beautiful and virtuos women are honoured and help up as models for other young women to emulate. This is done in the “Comparsas,” a grand and a spectacular costume ball and in popularity contest where young women were chosen for their beauty, brains and breathing. On that occasion the top families of the land went out for all night dancing and revelry in honor of the “Las Bellas Filipinas.”
Pagpapakumbaba at pagkamatulungin sa pag-unlad are among the best of the Filipino values-sheer guts, determination and decisiveness are the strength of many Filipino entrepreneurs. Through hard work, consistency and honesty they have achieved success. Filipinos with these values envy the carabao because  by the age of 2 years it is already a productive unit. They are determined to be productive like the carabao by scrimping and saving, they keep a low profile and work hard at everything. Generosity also means much to them. They feel light when they can help others and when they can give to others in need.
Empowering People by Filipino Values
Tumblr media
This is the time to encourage every Filipino to discover the Filipino values as well as the culture to motivate him to understand, appreciate and be proud of his heritage. This is the time when the Filipino is swept once again by the grand passion for power. The search for power without the search for values leads to dissipation of national energy and resources, which leads to politics of discord, rather than of concord, politics of deception rather than of concentration.
There is a need of empowering Filipinos by their own positive values there is an urgent need for the Filipino to rise above himself. The Filipinos of today must see himself within a regional, national, continental and global context. He must learn to telescope Philippine history in order to create a window to the 21st century. He must advance by positive values and study technology, for the country cannot make a quantum leap into the high-tech future without a solid base on the Filipino cultural roots.
The Filipino must rise above momentary differences or even unspeakable pain. H may not have money, nor machinery but has positive values. Yes, the Filipino must rise above his balat sibuyas and pusong mammon; he must rise above ignorance, apathy, timidity, servility, opportunism, bigotry, ambition, intolerance, and greed. In a conformist society, he must be a dissenter; in a frivolous and materialistic society, he must be a thinker and a doer; in a society mesmerized by slogans and dogmas, he must have a mind of his own and the courage to speak the truth.

Me Before You: Book Versus Film
Based on Jojo Moyes 2012 best-selling book , Me Before  You is a 2016  British-American romantic film directed by Thea Sharrock starring Emilia Clarke and Sam Claffin.
The Plot
It tells the story of Lou Clarke a 26 year old girl who is the breadwinner of her family while working at a cafe. After the cafe’s shutdown she was only left with a one option at the job centre to help her struggling family. Without skills and experience she was forced to go after a caregiver job for quadriplegic, Will Traynor. Will, who was once a master of the universe, who enjoyed all aspects of life, was paralyzed after being involved in an accident. This has caused him to have a negative outlook in life. He became jaded, rude and pretentious. As Lou attempts to change that at first, they clash but then they fell in love.  But, of some difficult reason an important decision is to be made.
What We Like About the Book
The book features small details that made the story whole. It describes everything in such precise detail that allows you to visualize scenes in your head. It is a well written book that will fill you with hope and just as quickly have your heart broken like never before.
What We Like About the Film
Emilia Clarke and Sam Claffin was the best fit for the role, they were what i pictured the character would look like and they have a great chemistry.  The movie allowed us to watch the characters interact with one another and see how they can be portrayed with our own eyes.
Differences:
For the most part, Me Before You is a brilliant adaptation, but it does miss out on some of the key scenes from the book. Here are the main differences:
1. The big maze scene/sexual attack subplot doesn't exist in the film.
2. Stephen Traynor's affair is cut out.
 3. In fact, Will's parents come across as a pretty strong couple in the movie version.
 4. Will doesn't have a sister.
 5. Louisa and Patrick haven't got as serious and they don't move in together in the movie.
 6. And Louisa doesn't move into the Traynors' house.
 7. Patrick doesn't tell the press about Will's plans to go through with an assisted suicide.
 8. The perspectives of other characters aren't given in the film.
 9. Louisa doesn't join a chat room or research the right-to-die issues as much.
10. Will and Louisa don't get matching tattoos.
Similarities:
Me Before You is incredibly easy to engage with, both on the page and on-screen. With two beautifully crafted lead characters, Lou and Will are a joy to follow, and it is their chemistry that will keep your eyes fixed on the screen. Just like with the book, I spent much of the film crying like a baby, as well, and cannot recommend both the book and the film enough for fans of this genre.
Final verdict:
Overall the movie stayed true to the book. Sure some scenes are missing but, as with all adaptations, not everything could stay exactly the same.

Descriptive Text About a Place
Mt. Fuji
Mount Fuji is the highest mountainin Japan. It rises to 12,388 feet (3,776 metres) near the Pacific Ocean coast  in Yamanashiand Shizuoka ken (prefectures) of central Honshu, about 60 miles (100 km) west of the Tokyo-Yokohama metropolitan area. It is a volcano that has been dormant since its last eruption, in 1707, but is still generally classified as active by geologists. The mountain is the major feature of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park (1936), and it is at the centre of a UNESCO World Heritage site designated in 2013.
Visible from Tokyo on a clear day, the beautiful cone-shaped mountain is located west of the city, surrounded by lakes in a national park. It is named for the Buddhist fire goddess Fuchi and is sacred to the Shinto goddess Sengen-Sama, whose shrine is found at the summit. It is the holiest of Japan's "Three Holy Mountains."
Its representation in Japanese art goes back to the 11th century, but 19th century woodblock prints of views, including those from sand beaches with pine tree groves have made Fujisan an internationally recognized icon of Japan and have had a deep impact on the development of Western art.
The climb is no walk in the park - it is very steep and takes about 8 hours - but for many it is an experience of a lifetime. It is estimated that up to a third of the climbers are foreign tourists, making for an atmosphere that is at once quinti essentially Japanese and international. An especially memorable approach is to complete the hike in the early morning, arriving at the summit in time to witness the sunrise.

DESCRIPTIVE TEXT
Once that first tear broke free, the rest followed in an unbroken stream. He dropped to his knees and wiped messily the snot streaming from his nose, he began to cry with the force of a person vomiting for hours. My father screamed like he’s being ripped off or murdered suffocating with each breath he took holding onto his pride. It was painful to see him like this. All my grandmother could do was embrace him and let the torrent of his tears to soak through her shirt, running her fingers through his hair in an attempt to calm the war with in his mind.

COMPARATIVE ESSAY
Traditional Dating VS Online Dating
The beauty of the internet is that it allows us to connect with other people around all corners of the world. Meeting, communicating, and sharing is made possible with unparalleled speed. But, in this age of internet with the main stage: social media, does really dating online possible?
The following essay takes a look at both side of the argument. Firstly, let us take a look at traditional dating. This kind of dating allows a face to face meeting instead of PC screen. This is more of a self-paced and general meeting interaction. This will help you find out whether or not you have chemistry in person. But when long distance relationship paves way that became staple in this career oriented age without access to internet staying into it is impossible.
On the other hand,  online dating offers a number of ways to get to know a potential date before meeting in person. Such computer-mediated communication allows for safe and convenient interaction, without much risk or time commitment. For the busy professional, or the safety-conscious, such communication is an excellent way to "test" potential partners. The degree of your knowledge is only limited to what he wants to share in the web. Dedicated to sharing one’s personal information at least for me is a pure insanity. It became on quantifiable thing.
At the end of the digital day, if you’re serious about meeting someone special, you must include a combination of both online and offline dating in your routine. Remember the goal of online dating is to take your relationship offline. Riding into the digital sunset together is now a way of everyday life.

CAUSE AND EFFECT
Revisiting Yolanda: The Time of Kindness and Heroism
Nearly 5 years after Yolanda hit the Philippines the kindness shown by countries around the world during that catastrophe remains. November in 2013 the super typhoon left Visayas with no little of hope. Damages amounted 9.09 billion pesos and a deathtoll of 3621 people.  This has caused countries to help the Filipino people. The world showed kindness as relief poured in almost instantly a few days after the tragedy. Private sector initiatives amounted to over P12.9 Billion as monitored by the Office of the Presidential Assistant for Rehabilitation and Recovery (OPARR). The international community responded generously in cash and kind. This act showed the nobility, compassion, and decency of the human spirit. There were people who chose to stand strong for the community and for the city, people who volunteered, people who chose to help relatives, friends, and even strangers despite their own losses.
I hope that most people can look back and say that despite the tragedy that visited their lives they did something that they can be proud of.

CLIPPED AND PACED NARRATIVES
CLIPPED NARRATION  THAT MAN, THAT MY FATHER DEARLY LOVED
The time when I first saw my dad cried- my unbreakable, indomitable, rock-steady father was crying. It was more than crying- it was a sobbing, heartbreaking, and painful release.
PACED NARRATION THAT MAN, THAT MY FATHER DEARLY LOVED
I learned pretty quickly that my father’s silence has nothing to do with me. Nor could I do anything. To the ambient noise around him. That had welcome a fact. His stories were never shared. So I collected stories from other people instead.
The story I heard is about an impatient man who could if he wanted control the breathing of your eyes. And, a mother who stood by her man- knowing that there would be a lot more trouble if she took her children’s side. Siblings who were disciplined by having to kneel on salt-faced with hardship and adversity at a very young age.
I cannot speak for my father what life must have been for him. I can only speak what it was for me who listened for cues through his body, waiting for whimpers of a story of hurt he never told.
When I was seven my father received an abrupt call from my grandmother in Quezon. She said that my grandfather’s end is coming. We rushed and drive to my father’s hometown. It was a first time for me and my siblings to  witness the place where my father spent his childhood. The school he attended, the ocean where he wrote poems about and their home where he lived at. A vivid memory that is of valued currency up until now.
It was on the 27th day of May in the year 2008- an unusual day for a kid for whom nothing out of the ordinary happens unless, it happens to the adults in his life and he too is touched. It was my only recollection of my grandfather, it was when he was already on his deathbed. And until then it was a notoriously remorseless man who refused anyone’s help, a man who died too proud.
That day I saw my father cried, and I remember worrying what for, not yet learning the regret of unspoken love. It would be the one moment of certainty that would stand out among others that have let me unsure.
