Direct investment in the field of medical equipment
In the weeks since the World Health Organization declared the Covid-19 pandemic, all eyes were on the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries. What can they come up with to fight this virus, and how? However, this battle will never be won by expertise alone. Investments are needed across the board, especially foreign direct investment (FDI), especially in medical equipment.
In terms of greenfield medical device FDI projects, GlobalData's database shows 217 projects in 2020 (the year the pandemic was declared), up from 202 the previous year.
Of the 419 medical device projects tracked over the two-year period, the majority (63%) were new projects, with the remainder being expansion projects.
In second place is the Asia-Pacific region with 18% of announced or open projects, followed by North America, Central America and the Caribbean, Central and Eastern Europe, and the Commonwealth of Independent States. Regionally, MENA, South America and Sub-Saharan Africa attracted only a handful of projects.
Western Europe and the US are important hubs for medical device investment for a number of reasons, said Glenn Barklie, chief economist at Investment Monitor. "First, there are large groups of consumers with high levels of disposable income who can afford to buy medical products," he said. "In addition, many of these countries have government-backed schemes to pay for new products and medicines (such as the UK's National Health Service) or to subsidize consumers' costs."
The two sites are also at the forefront when it comes to innovation in medical practice, he added. "This attracts talent, such as researchers and engineers, to these places, which is another big investment motivation for the life sciences industry," Buckley said. “Additionally, these economies tend to be entrepreneurial – providing funding, support, good network infrastructure, links to top universities, etc.”
The US attracted the majority of projects for business functions related to manufacturing, R&D, headquarters, logistics and warehousing. Germany holds the largest share of projects related to sales, management and marketing, followed by France and the United States.
An example of such a project is the establishment of a new subsidiary in Germany called Phisure by Guangdong Gukang Biotechnology Co., Ltd., a Chinese company specializing in the development and distribution of in vitro diagnostic reagents. The subsidiary focuses on the import and export of medical products such as processing equipment, laboratory consumables and bio-minerals.
Another major move was the opening of a new subsidiary in the French commune of Canejan by Med Trust Handelsge, an Austria-based manufacturer of in vitro diagnostics and medical products.
Research by GlobalData shows that U.S. investors have backed substantial projects in Costa Rica, France, Germany, Ireland, Mexico and the United Kingdom, with smaller, but not insignificant, projects in the Netherlands, China and Belgium.
The US is the top destination for medical device FDI by German investors, followed by France and India.
Germany and the US are the two clear leaders when it comes to medical device FDI at the national level. The two countries top both the inward and outward FDI tables, accounting for 33% of global FDI inflows and 39% of medical device outflows in 2019 and 2020. These two countries look set to maintain this dominance for years to come, but the Covid-19 pandemic means investors are looking at the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries with new eyes, so as we enter the post-Covid era, the situation Significant changes are possible.
