Hello there! :D I just stumbled across your fic exchange for Just Dance and tbh I didn't know it even had a fandom until just a few minutes ago! Is there some sort of lore I'd need to track down, or are there just fandom-accepted personalities, or is it kind of a free-for-all on characterization? My interest is piqued! <3

Hi! Yep, Just Dance has lore! I’d definitely start with the story modes from Just Dance 2023 and 2024 Editions, which is the main lore storyline. You can find them both on YouTube. From there, there’s also a handful of prequel maps and other maps that are connected to that storyline.

There’s also lore relating to a lot of the other dances in the game. The Bride from the original Hot N Cold map is in a romantic relationship with Rasputin from the Rasputin map and they’ve had a whirlwind relationship over the course of several maps from across different games. A bunch of the Britney Spears maps are actually connected, with the dancer being the same secret agent performing different missions.

There’s even multiple characters who are canonically humans pulled into the world of Just Dance (called the Danceverses, which is in turn made up of multiple themed worlds called danceverses). The lore goes wild, truly, and though it’s a lot to learn and keep up with, it’s also a ton of fun!

Since it’s a dancing game with no dialogue, it’s definitely different from other fandoms when it comes to characterization in fics, but you’d be surprised what you can discern about the characters (who are called coaches) just from watching the maps. Of course, a lot of it is up to interpretation and the fandom tends to build up an idea of how the characters would behave, but it’s a lot of fun to bring to life characters that otherwise don’t even have any canon dialogue.

Lemme know if you have any specific questions, because there’s so much lore that it can definitely be confusing and seem daunting to learn lol. I hope you end up finding a new interest in this game and its story and fandom!
