29: Shotaro Ishinomori.  Even if I don’t see much of this work, it felt appropriate to have one of the first prominent cartoon artists in Japanese history in this challenge, since a lot of the works that inspire me would not exist without his influence.  I do have to admit though, while studying his art for this one, I had to end up making some changes and straying from his “classic” style a bit.  His characters tend to have an extreme case of Tiny Head Syndrome, but I still like how it came out in the end.
30: Matt Groening.  It’d be sacrilege to do this challenge and not include such an iconic style.  Oddly enough, most of my references came from Futurama, but in the end it looks like Simpsons.  It just seemed appropriate.  Curiously it was a difficult style for me, because there are so few hard points.  Mostly round shapes and circles, almost entirely.  But I like it, and call it successful.
31: Jhonen Vasquez.  Wow, how was this for contrast to all the curvy, colorful stuff from the rest of this batch?  I feel like it ended up looking like the “Heaven’s Secretary” character, which I suppose is a sign of success.  I approached this similarly to the Tim Burton challenge, in finding a balance between the extremes of Vasquez’s style, not looking as smooth and simple as a Zim character, but also not the sketchy gore of JTHM.  I’m a little sad that all of his characters are rail-thin, and most of the heavy characters I found to reference were horrible pig-beasts.  What you gonna do though…
32: Bob’s Burgers.  This was a lot of fun, and I was able to renew my appreciation for a style that relies on making all the characters a little bit dumpy-looking.  Honestly the hardest part was understanding that absolutely no references had a discernible chin, which I’m so used to.  But I’m really happy with this one, and was looking forward to it since I added it to my list.
