“Beware the Ides of March?” Marcella said, staring up at the graffiti sprayed onto the front windows of Caesar Investment. “What kind of sick joke is this?”

His comments made her angry, but not outwardly so. Marcella had never been one to express outward emotion, ever. Even as a child, before she was adopted, she had been that way. “I have control of the situation. No, I can’t control him. As we have both seen in the recent weeks, you cannot control the actions of the ones you love. They do as they wish and there is not anything-” she sighed, “I cannot control him. But I can control myself, and I still have control of this situation.” Most of it. The very fact that she could not control Henry limited everything.
“You’re right-” her face fell and she looked away, “I’m divorcing you right this second. Our hypothetical marriage would be nothing but misery on both of our parts.” Probably just hers though. Benedick would not make a good husband. She wasn’t even sure if she liked him yet, he just happened to be the only person in this situation that she could stand at this point. She took a sip of her water. “However, you’ll have to break it to the hypothetical children and the hypothetical dog. Also to my hypothetical new personal assistant because in this new, hypothetical future I get to fire Brunhilde.”
“Just because your dad did it doesn’t mean Hal can,” Dick objected, his eyebrows furrowing. “Why do you talk about your life like you’re resigned to just… settling? This isn’t a business deal with some hot shot CEO from America that forces you to compromise, this is the rest of your life. Doesn’t it scare you that someone else is calling the shots?” He pressed his lips together in pause, and maybe a twinge of regret. He always spoke his mind, and his filter was practically nonexistent, which he figured Marcella probably wouldn’t appreciate. But he’d already said it, so he continued. “Don’t you want… Control?”
Maybe that’s why Hal did it. Dick didn’t even want to go down that path, so he grinned instead. “I don’t think I know what you mean at all. The real reason is that you don’t want to marry me. Hands down, worst husband ever. You should already go ahead and divorce me, honestly. You’re not the issue at all.”

The Hamlet Nielsen ordeal had been in her morning briefing. And while she didn’t care for the boy, his mother had been helpful over the last few weeks. Gertrude had been nice, perhaps for her own personal gain, but kindness was something Marcella appreciated. She wasn’t sure who this Dina girl was, another nobody who was caught in the cross fires of Verona’s elite. It was a pity. Yet, apparently she was important to Patrick, and again, Marcella appreciated kindness, and Patrick had been kind to her. She did not trust him, or really like him, but she did appreciate kindness. “Dina is your- girlfriend?” such childish terms.
“Oh don’t be dramatic Patrick, if you want to end him you can be much more creative than actually taking his life.”
Hearing the stern tone in Marcella’s voice gave him pause; something about the way she spoke told him he had to calm down, now, before he did something rash. He tried to allow his rising anger to evaporate, or at least try to have a handle on it, but it was impossible. Internally, a part of him knew that Dina would have been able to help. If he could see her. Standing there, he watched in silence as the woman beside him spoke to the doctor, and with a frightened glance in Patrick’s direction, the man scurried off.
“Thank you,” he gritted his teeth, torn between knowing she didn’t deserve any of this malice and needed someone to take his frustration out on. Finally, he answered her question, his voice full of venom. “Dina— she got hit by a car. Hamlet Nielsen’s car.” Patrick pinched his nose between his fingers, letting out a long sigh. “I’m going to kill him.”

“Of course. Clauses on both sides, of course, but that kind of talk is for the office. Caesar Investment would be pleased to have you.”
“And are there any clauses to this agreement that I should know about?”

“Oh, fantastic. I’ve recently been told that I don’t have one those. Perhaps you should seek companionship elsewhere then.”
“Alas, it it good to meet you Ariel Castello.”
“I am aware of that. I also value a woman’s personality. I’m Ariel Castello.”

“I thank you for the compliment sir, however, a woman can be so much more than a face.”
“But- Marcella Caesar.”
“My, what a lovely face. Might I have the pleasure of knowing the name of whom it belongs to?”

She sighed, “You’re right. I think my father approved of him because of Hal’s supposed loyalty towards me. My father knew that-” Hal would fall for her? Perhaps. But agreements had been made when they were just children. When she was still thought in Russian and he was too cool to hang out with girls. “Regardless, my father was a philanderer himself, any extramarital relations would not lessen his image of Henry, I believe.”
Marcella thought to dismiss the man entirely. She did not keep up with the politics of England as much as she should, Christ, who had the time? She was running a Forbes Fortune 500 company for crying out loud. But then she heard the name Windsor and finally it all clicked.
“Oh, stop it. You don’t want to marry me, Benedick. Regardless of your pedigree, marrying me is not-” ideal? For anyone? “You know what I mean.”
He listened quietly, nodding occasionally to let her know he was paying attention. Marcella was smart. Dick didn’t still didn’t understand her goals, or ambitions, but they seemed almost… selfless. They were for the greater good instead of for herself, even if that meant marrying someone who would cheat on her just because he got his feelings hurt. It was hard to believe that this was the person he yelled at only two weeks ago. “No, you aren’t the most agreeable person,” he agreed, giving another lopsided grin to show he didn’t mean any offense. “But… I don’t think that gives him an excuse to what he did to you. I don’t think it gives him an excuse to just… have whatever meltdown he’s having right now. I know Hal better than I know myself, but I just don’t know the person he’s acting like right now, and I don’t know if he’s going to snap out of it. He’s not the guy your father approved of right now.”
He watched her for a moment, taking a sip of the detox fruit water – which was surprisingly good – and when he sat down the glass he was speaking before he could stop himself. “I fit that criteria, by the way,” he laughed, genuinely amused by what she said. “I’m definitely not dull. I’m a little rusty, but I know what fork is meant for salad and what fork is meant for desert and all that ridiculous shit. I’m also charming as fuck, thank you very much.” He paused before he laughed again. “Oh my God, wait, you don’t know who my family is, do you? I’m not from around here, but I guess that’s reasonable, but you have heard of a little place called Windsor, England, right?”
“If that’s all you need in a husband, and if I fit that description, don’t you think you’ll be able to find someone else? I mean, hell, just fucking marry me.”

“Patrick. Language.” It wasn’t the cursing that bothered her, it was his tone: anger and passion, and directed towards some innocent doctor. Marcella turned from Patrick to the doctor, “My name is Marcella Caesar, and I think you know what that name means. Perhaps you could get this gentleman here some answers, it would mean a great deal to me, personally-” the doctor nodded, assured her that he was doing his best, and would be back soon.
She did not care about Patrick or his pesky problems, but she also knew it was likely the doctor would leave him here waiting if she left his side. “What’s going on here?”
“Don’t try and fucking calm me down,” the words came out low and rough, completely uncharacteristic of Patrick. Rarely did he get angry, but his blood was boiling as his fingers clenched into a fist, his knuckles turning white. “Dina—I need to see Dina. Right now, or I’ll go crazy.” He looked at the person before him, fury and frustration and heartbreak burning in his intense gaze. “Are you going to let me see her or do I need to make you?”

“We keep meeting.” / “Remember despite our estrangement, I’m your man.” / “Your perfume smells like your daddy’s got money.” [ FOR PATRICK ]
“We keep meeting.”
“Not because I want to, mind you. I need you to send my personal assistant your measurements. She has sent you three emails, Patrick. Three. Emails. I understand that everyone in the wedding party has slept with one another at this point, but you should all follow my example and get over the pettiness and grow up. I need you to send the damn measurements by five.”
“Remember despite our estrangement, I’m your man.”
“Patrick, while that was a very good impersonation, I came here to tastefully drink in public, not to be cheered up.”
“Your perfume smells like your daddy’s got money.”
“My father was murdered on the steps of the city council building. I can tell you were attempting humor of some sort, but it’s fallen short.”

“I’m sure they’re out there, but finding a decent man is difficult to find. I can’t marry anyone dull, or completely brainless, or anyone unpolished. I can’t marry someone without goals, charm is nice as well and- these are not traits that I just desire, well, they’re needed. I am a Caesar, I can’t just marry any man who comes my way, you know. Especially since- I’ve been promised to Hal for so long.” she paused, and took a sip of her water. “And I’m not the most agreeable person, am I? I have faults, not many, but they are there. I do not like to bring feelings into the equation but- at least Hal liked me for who I am. Or- I thought he did. That was- that was a nice feeling.”
“Plus, if I do not marry Hal, I lose his parent’s support, which is still important to following through with what my father wanted. And I lose-” him. She still wanted to be with him. She no longer liked him, or really wanted to be around him. But she still wanted to be with him. How wretched a man to make her feel at all, much less feel love or desire. He wondered why she had hidden away her emotions for so long, and this was not her original reason for doing so. “-I lose the man my father thought was the most suitable partner for me. I’m not sure if you ever met him, but my father was a very, very wise man.”
He couldn’t help it – he gave a lopsided grin when Marcella cursed, though he immediately pressed his lips together to pretend like he hadn’t. The past two conversations they had showed him she was a lot more than his first impression. She was funny, whether she meant to be or not. “That’s an understatement, yeah. Fucked up,” he agreed, still fighting his twitching lips.
He stretched his arm to pull the glass closer to her, still lazily leaned over the counter. His eyebrows twitched as he frowned. “Why don’t you just call off the engagement?” he asked. “You don’t have to make anything public. There are– there are a lot of eligible bachelors out there who would kick themselves silly for a shot with you, and I bet none of them will cheat on you. If he doesn’t marry you, he loses med school. I think that’s the deepest you can cut him.”
He paused, watching her curiously. “I’ve understood Hal’s leverage in this arrangement, but I’ve never understood yours. What do you lose if you don’t marry him? Specifically him? If it’s something, is it really worth this? Don’t you think you deserve a hell of a lot better than someone who can’t figure out if he’s in love with you or Bea?”

“I’ll leave you to it”
“No. Hero- wait. What if the crust burns? Or they don’t cool all the way and it doesn’t set correctly? You should stay, I don’t want to mess them up.”
.
“I have been looking for you”
“No, no. I’ve been looking for you. There’s someone here I want you to meet, remember that businesswoman from America I was telling you about? Well she’s here and wants to meet you. She’ll love you of course, and I think she’ll offer you that year long internship for after graduation that we discussed. That’ll be perfect. I’m so happy for you.

Marcella did not believe that Beatrice was sorry that she had been caught up in all of this. How does one not expect repercussions of their actions? Adults understood that. And clearly, neither Henry or his mistress were mature enough to realize that they would each have to pay for their actions. It would be easy to vilify the woman, as most scorned women so often do to the women their significant other cheated with. Yet to vilify one and not the other would be problematic. Thus, she would hold them each accountable.
“Oh I’ve already told Hal how I feel about this, and will continue to do so until I feel like he’s atoned. Believe me, he’s not getting off of the hook so easily. But it is also unfair to treat you as an unwilling participant in the events that transpired. The fact that he wrongfully believed that I would not care does not justify the actions that occurred.”
She took a sip of the still hot tea. “Beatrice, did I ask you to stay away from him completely? Of course not. I would be unreasonable for me to ask him to stay away from one of his friends, especially one of his best friends. I’m not that person. You don’t need my permission to be in his life, but you do need to understand that I am apart of his life now too. I’m not going anywhere. That’s exactly why I want to be civil with you.” Marcella was a woman of action. If she really wanted Beatrice gone, she could have the other woman on a cargo plane to Argentina by now. Marcella did not like Beatrice, but it was not uncommon for Marcella to not like people. Verona was literally full of people she hated, what was one more?
She didn’t say much as she set about making the tea. She seemed calm but really she felt like every nerve in her body was wired to the fact that this women was in her apartment. She felt everything from guilt to anger to resentment to jealousy. She just had to focus on the damn tea to keep from any of those emotions to come out in a ugly way. Well an uglier way than they already have.
She let Marcella finish speaking before placing a mug in front of her filled with steaming tea. “I’m sorry, that people got caught in the cross fires of this, including you. I am.” She didn’t say that she wasn’t sorry that she did it though, even Beatrice wasn’t that stupid. “But maybe you should be saying this to Hal. Because he’s the one who kissed me, brought me back to his room and from what he said it sounded like he didn’t think you would care at all.”
“As for staying away from him… Hal’s been my best friend for years. I won’t go after him but staying away from him won’t be so easy. Sorry but thats the truth.”

“You’re ex girlfriend?” Marcella had never had a best friend. Allegra was the closest thing to one she had ever had, and even still she kept the other girl at a distance. But even Marcella knew that, in a hypothetical situation in which she would be dating and presumably sexually active, she would leave Allegra’s friends alone. “That’s, that’s fucked up-” Benedick had this way of creating genuine reactions within her. Marcella did not appreciate it.
“No, no, your opinion does matter-” She trailed off as she quickly re-wrapped her head around the new development in the situation. “-dumping him in a river isn’t a terrible idea-” her father had done it to several of his enemies. Perhaps he would do the same to Hal if he had not been murdered. Or perhaps her father would tell her to grow up, get a grip. People did shitty things.
She handed his glass to him and took a sip of her own water. “I could crucify him for this. I don’t think he understands that. Revealing everything would make me look sympathetic, which would give me even more leverage over Antony. Plus it would ruin his career. No woman wants their child looked after by known-cheater.” She sighed. “But alas, we’ll cross the Rubicon if it comes to it.”
“And stop apologizing, Benedick. Honestly. Neither one of us should be apologizing about anything.”
Dick’s lips curled in disgust. “Did he really fucking say that to you? Jesus Christ.” He shook his head and dropped his hat on the kitchen counter, biting the inside of his lip so he didn’t explode. He felt like he didn’t even know who Hal was over the past week. It was like someone flipped a switch, and suddenly his best friend as replaced by a complete asshole.
He cleared his throat, laughing slightly. “I should probably go for the detox fruit water, yeah,” he replied, leaning over the counter as she poured her drink. He winced at the mention of Beatrice, scratching the back of his neck with an awkward shrug. “Not really a mutual friend, no, but I know a lot.”
“Beatrice is my ex girlfriend,” he continued, with a nonchalant wave of his hand. He was putting on face, but so was she, so it wasn’t like she was going to call him out on it. “If Hal wants to fuck around and have a quarter life crisis, or whatever it is he’s doing, he can be my guest. The only thing I have to say is that I am sorry. I’m sorry you have to be engaged to him. I know you don’t care about my opinion, and the last advice I gave you was really shitty in hindsight, but dump him in a fucking river.”
