I’m seeing some things going around stating that the shower scene in TKM is out of character and reinforcing some sort of cliche about gay men, and it makes me realize that people maybe don’t understand all the roles sex can play in a relationship.  Like, it’s not all just, horny horny horny?

Sex is a way of connecting.  Yes, it can be rough and hard and purely to seek an orgasm, sure.  But it can also be tender and gentle and reassuring. 

They had been getting off together for weeks, it’s stated right there in the scene (well, Andrew was getting Neil off).  And then they had one night of terror, where neither of them thought they would ever see each other again.  Where Andrew thought Neil was dead, and Neil lost himself in Nathaniel and wasn’t sure if he’d live to find his way out again. 

That moment in the shower, Andrew opting for a more intimate way of pleasuring Neil than his hands–that is Andrew reassuring himself.  That Neil is there, that he’s okay.  That they’re okay together.  That their this has not been destroyed by the previous 48 hours.  This is not about not being able to control baser instincts; it’s about tapping into those instincts to rejoice in each other, in their survival. 

Look, sex is not for everyone, and that is fine.  But for those where it is a valued part of their relationship, it can be healing to enjoy each other in that way.  That’s why it’s the first time Andrew lets himself get off with Neil still there.  Neil doesn’t totally understand it, though he’s obviously really happy about it, because sex means different things for him than it does for Andrew.  But for Andrew–who has spent years reclaiming his agency when it comes to sex and is still on shaky ground in that regard–it’s a very profound moment.  It is him taking Neil’s vulnerability from his injuries and offering up a little piece of his own in exchange.  And to me, that is very in-character.

You know what I love about the foxhole court?

It features a canon lgbt relationship between a gay boy and a demisexual boy, a relationship that isn’t even a main focus of the books but still manages to contribute to both the plot and the character development.

A same-sex relationship that doesn’t end tragically, that shows these two characters staying together for years to come and leading a healthy domestic life with two cats, an apartment and a joint career.

A relationship that may not start out well, that is anything but love at first sight, but grows so much through personal struggles and mutual respect, and results in something worthwhile.

A relationship that places heavy emphasis not only on mutual consent, on learning and supporting, on protection and respect, but also on individual independence.

A relationship that doesn’t cast other characters to the sidelines, that isn’t the main character’s only source of happiness, because it takes more than romance to develop a character.

A relationship with a goddamn happy ending that feels entirely deserving for both characters because this is how they love, this is how they overcome their past, this is how they grow, not dependent on each other but side-by-side.

Just a goddamn happy same-sex relationship that doesn’t end in death or separation and that involves characters actually learning to respect and love each other basically???

O have dark hair and my body hair is blonde so

okay so im a ginger, gonna weigh in here. neils eyebrows? blonde as hell, practically invisible. leg hair? vivid red + some black. hair everywhere else will also swing wildly between a red completely different than that on his head, super light blonde, and ridiculously dark brown/black. red hair is a trip.

I’m ginger and my body hair is blonde! I have no fucking idea how neil could pull off black hair if his body hair was lighter, because while dying eyebrows is plausible….. leg hair is Not. he’d have to wear long pants and sleeves at all times or shave it all off

you heard it here folks! neil’s body hair totally didn’t match that on his head
