camelot old guard headcanons pt 2

yes i know the wiki has all the canon stuff all nice and neat together and i do sometimes read that but let my adhd run around in the yard a bit

i got distracted wondering wtf vivienne's deal was, anyway

the du bois crest, ygraine's crest, is a phoenix, right, and the pendragon's is a dragon, and whatshisface is a raven, and shouldn't vivienne have one?

nimueh : utterly devoted to vivienne (who isn't am i right)

vivienne: married to gorlois -why?- not fae as in pointy ears but fae as in woman with really powerful magic. THE high priestess (right?)

ygraine: cares for uther even if she doesn't quite love him (who does?) and very close friends with vivienne

(wait, how are you a high priestess and you're married to a man in a castle? we have to assume that vivienne was with gorlois because she liked him or else most of my house of cards comes down. actually, i never saw a marriage certificate. that's it, besties, they're not married. they're just together. problem solved)

(also gorlois had his own spot of land, that's why he was buried way out there. morgana just doesn't inherit it because fuck women. it's just uther's now)

is the du bois family the original holders of camelot? wtf does du bois mean hold on, and why DO we have french in wales. who put frenchmen in my welsh. anyway it means of the woods/forest which is cool cool cool tells me nothing we literally don't even know where the family lived before...okay... so does it make more sense that uther took over camelot from the du Bois family and the sons moved away? no, that doesn't make much sense, tristan would have tried to kill uther much sooner. or would he? perhaps uther took ygraine as a bride and in return spared the rest of the family and gave them an estate somewhere in camelot. idk! the other option is he killed everyone in charge in camelot and then courted ygraine from a neighboring...maybe not kingdom. maybe they do just live on an estate. that's fine

uther came from the south (the allegorical romans) and uh yeah that's basically all i have they're romans under a different name. oh wait also that means he left all his family on the mainland. because he was... a general. yeah. sure. he just stayed there and got all that chunk of land as a reward for his service. that's why camelot style is so different from the surrounding areas (totally that and not just the anachronism and visual shorthands. yep). point being eye don't feel like doing much with arthur's mainland relatives until maybe much later

morgause / camelot old guard headcanons

morgause's 2x08 plot was genuine. it makes more sense that way and also i like it and i need to like something or i'll never get anywhere

could also mollify me in the whole area of why the fuck she didn't reach back out to morgana, or do that beforehand, or talk to her much more in their one scene in that episode, because maybe she was planning on arthur turning on uther and everything being a whole lot different and her and morgana being able to speak openly and at their leisure.

>also, morgause isn't as powerful as nimueh, she (initially) cannot come and go in camelot as she pleases so there's a lot of danger in coming in to speak with morgana, who she can't exactly trust either. she teleports in and out all the time later though which is more just the writers/budget being shit, but could also imply that she needed to, like, paint a teleportation rune or something who knows

in contrast nimueh always hated arthur because a) she saw him as an extension of uther b) she had some kind of premonition or belief or attitude that led her to think he was destined to be Like That

in my notes from 2-3 years ago i decided that morgause's parents were vivienne and a knight-guardian. i... think canonically she is gorlois and vivienne's. so... parents not as in who had her biologically, but as in who raised her after she was smuggled out. the knight-guardian's parent title is literally Guardian instead of Mother or Father. they're a woman who lives as a man to be unchallenged as a knight in post-Roman southern Britain and their biology is none of your business. also by the time morgause is show-age they're a hot butch milf. the end

morgause learned swordfighting because she was never going to let them cut her down like they did her family (she was raised in the isle of the blessed when it was a town. the mists, while a natural phenomenon of a floodplain, never lift above the ruins because they are saturated with the grief and the echos of those who died there.)

nimueh scorns swordfighting and most of morgause's life decisions. this comes up fairly often

also, the plot to poison the water supply took forever to prepare. i'm deciding that's why. and she meant to decimate their population and then poison arthur at the treaty and send them into war, but when she realized arthur's servant had just enough magic to be troublesome she turned the poison on him instead to get him out of the way and preserve the rest of her plan.

(unclear why she didn't reach out to him to try and turn him. "destiny" doesn't really hold up. either she knows the prophecy and thinks he'll return magic to the land or she doesn't know and thinks he's just preserving his stable source of employment. but if you wanna be fun about it you could say she might not have done it because she's highly matriarchal and highly classist.)

(she also doesn't ever reach out to morgana even though she knows her maternal ancestry and her chances of inheriting magic and her political sympathies. i've chosen to attribute that to the writers)
