You ever make a blog to post art on, and then remember that you hate writing? Which is strange, given how much you have to say on the things that you make?
Anyway, the completed version of the previous paiting is done:

For the blue section, I again used tape , along with a sheet of paper, to prevent any bleed over on to the other part of the canvas. I ended up using 3 layers of tape, rather than the single layer I used last time.

Then for the pink, I used a pretty square brush, just to see how evenly I could the paint spread. Overall, I think it worked better than expected, and having now done this over a third of a small cavnas really made me appreciate the time it would take to do this on a larger scale.

Finally, for the middle third, I used a pretty small pallette knife. I though this would be easier to smoothly spread the paint, rather than the brush, but honestly, I think it was harder. Maybe this is just my experience with the brushg effecting my perception, but I think I'm mainly going to be using my brush from here on out.

Yeah, you can really see how unevenly it's spread.... oh well!

Alright! I want to try doing this again, but using some of my previous misktaes to vhange what I was trying to make, into somthing that's better. Also I've got some white and blaack pint to maybe shade the colours a bit...
Time for painting #3!

So, I bought some spray paint a while back, mainly because I could, but didn’t use it for much, except some stencilling. But between then and now I saw the post (don’t have a link, sorry) about Who’s Afriad of Red, Yellow and Blue by Barnett Newman, and the story about how it got attacked, and the technical difficult of making that painting in the first place, and trying to restore it, and so on...
But, I do have to take the talk about the difficulty of making a painting like that at face value. I don’t peronally have experience in painting myself, so I’m going to take their word for it.
Unless I try painting something like that myself.
Ok, first issue, I don’t have room or money(?) for a 2M by 5M canvas, or the knowledge to make a canvas that size myself, but since I have no expereince, trying to do so at a smaller scale should be a suitable challenge anyway.
So I bought a 10′’x8′’ stretch canvas (£3.50), and some other paint (59 ml system3 acrylic, 2 tubes at £4 each), a brush (flat,1′‘, £2.50), a pallette knife (for variety, 2 3/4′‘, £4), and a pallette (£2.50). This, plus the spray paint (Gloss, £7) brings the total up to £27.50.
My plan here is to try each method on a third of the canvas. One third spray paint, one third standard brush, one third knife. I’ve done some painting before, but not for a while, and I don’t consider myself very good with a brush. I used the spray paint somewhat recently, but just on cardboard, to see how being at different distance effects the pattern. I have no experience using palette knives. Fun times!
Ok, so painting. I wanted to start with the spray paint, because.... spray paint on canvas, what’s that like? Well, it’s more because it’ll be the most messy, and I want to do the spray painting outside. Anyway, I started by using some masking tape to seperate the third for spray paint. Then I got painting.

(It now occurs to me these photos look like shit. Oh well.)
Ok, so the tape hasn’t worked great, but I’ll be painting over the middle section later, it’ll be fine.
Otherwise that looks ok, but it does seem rather an uneven application of paint... Oh hey, the canvas came with these small wood slats... maybe I can use them to spread the paint, and then th-

Ah. No, that,... that doesn’t work...
Okay, time a second layer... after some more masking tape.

Alright, fixed my damage. Went a little wide, but otherwise, a good job. Time to remove the tape!

Ah. Uh. Well....
hmmm
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/f9f5e3caa0d67392c919a75f5c386b77/98fd54fce938189a-6e/s540x810/25d576bc50220dab71179112f2088f751da5de8d.jpg)
Hmmmmmmm....
Okay, from a technical perspective, this isn’t particully smooth. Definitely a rather uneven application of the paint. Also, while the tape helped protect the areas directly beneath it, it didn’t protect the area directly above it.
From an personal subjective view?
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/a621f507740a21d18cbac15150b9c6b0/98fd54fce938189a-9b/s540x810/479a03e47c0e0501cfebf7d257f33d808c871210.jpg)
I really like this? I’m going to have to start again on another canvas, because I want to keep this on how it is. I feel as if it nicely represents a rather abstract view of the ocean? The dithering from the spray paint spilling over the masking tape to fill a skyline is beutiful, and,well.. hang on.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d78afeeacdb8028befbf6c46408949a2/98fd54fce938189a-35/s540x810/20a079c71ce699c7b1d1170ca595c1857d03bad0.jpg)
So, I’m unsure if this comes across in the photos, but the act of removing the paint from the canvas, and then reapplying it left some spots of canvas leaking through, which really kinda sells the ocean view?
The things I did here that were, uh, ““mistakes”” ended up being the things that I liked the most about it. So where does that leave me going forward?
Well, it does mean one thing at least.. I’m going to go out to buy another canvas.

What’s a blog?
I have minimal artistic experience. But all art is subjective. So, with that in mind;
Goals:
1. Create Art (unavoidable really)
2. Create Art I like (if somone has to be subjective, it should be me)
3. Experiment (I currently lack experience, let’s try to fix that)
4. Budget (How much does this cost to do as a hobby?)
5. Blog (First side blog for me, let’s see how this goes)
Ok, with that all set out, lets get going.
