Contrasting Melody

Here I am with a new song analysis in “Lyrical Love”! Today’s subject is a song by the Japanese rock band The Birthday, precisely Piano, released as lead-track of their eighth single with the same name on 16th December 2009. The song is incredibly melting and powerful, with a compelling melody and deep lyrics, worth of a great ballad.

THE MUSIC

Slow guitar notes open the song, with a warmer shade, accompained by a shaded drum work, which fits quite well in the theme, where the guitar starts gradually to accentuate; Yusuke’s voice is melting, providing a great interpretation in a melancholic and powerful ballad, for one of the best songs by the band so far.

THE WORDS

Written by the singer Yusuke Chiba, the song sees a pretty cohesive layout in the text, where there’s a prevalence of strong images, colors and impressive metaphors, in an approach similiar to the literary style starting from particular things arriving to general ones. The single itself is layered in different styles, as, along with the mentioned song, it features Hum69, an instrumental track, and Itoshii no yankee girl (Beloved yankee girl), dealing with having a girlfriend living in West, in contrast with the theme of the song we are talking about here. In fact the oppositions drive the core meaning of the song, starting from the title-word. The piano is not seen only as the instrumental music, but as an image which features a dichotomy per itself; the keys are coloured in white and black, two contrasting colors, which are linked to the other oppositions featured in the text (life/death, spring/winter, love/pain, light/darkness), and the melody they play together unites the two sides. So the song itself is nothing else than an allegory of human existence, made of a bright and a dark side. And now… let’s analyze the song!

I) The text starts with the protagonist who is hearing the piano’s sound and then when he gets closer, sees the fingers on the white and black keys of the piano, the main image of the text (Piano kikoeta yubi ga mieru/shiro to kuro no ue o); everything starts from the melody played by the piano, which is blocking his breath and immoblizing him (Melody soko kara subete hajimaru/iki o nonde sono ba tachisukumu), describing it as a feeling that nobody should have (dare mo inai son’na kimochi), the reason which makes everybody fading in the light blue (kieta min’na mizuiro, “mizuiro” in Japanese is literally the color of water, linked to watercolors and in a more symbolical form, to the transiety of human life)

II) This melody revokes the winter, the season where the snow falls softly, an event which he chooses to not see, as his eyes are closed (Yuki no furu kisetsu ni sore wa yoku niteru/yawaraka ni ochitekuru me o tsumutta you ni); in an open field, a blue butterfly (symbol of female grace and of the spring) starts to fly (Harappa neteru aoi chouchou), while a name, his, resonated in Babel, that wouldn’t be understood in the chaos (namae tsuketa Babel hibiki de); the butterfly’s fly shakes the air with the sound of its plumes (symbol of purity), carrying a warm and light heart (hane no oto de kuuki yureta/kokoro karuku atatakaku), which would melt the icy winter.

III) The melody revokes also the spring, the season where the flowers bloom, noticed by the girl, who is the protagonist’s love interest (Hana no saku kisetsu ni sore wa yoku niteru/soshite ano musume wa iu haru ga kitanette); the melody continues to be vivid, so that he forgets even the concept of breathing (Melody soko kara itsumo hajimaru/iki o suru no wasurete shimau); in the sky the light goes through the dark space between clouds, bringing to him so much happiness that he would dance in a thunder (kumo no suki ma nuketa hikari/toki ni ha kaminari odoru yo ureshikute).

IV) The final sequence is a repetition of respectively the first parts of the second, the third and the first one.

The piano as a representation of existence, made by light and darkness, love and pain and good and evil, contrasting themselves in each day spent. The Birthday goes on with an impactful image, well rendered with their harsh sound and the plain but piercing words, making their work even deeper than expected, especially for a band of their genre.

Progress Checkup! (Aug. 2024) | Scratchin' Melodii Devlog

Hello again, strangers! I thought it was about time to add another devlog again! This time I'm trying out a more in-depth approach to this, to somewhat make up for the lack of gameplay previews. Let me know what you think!

For starters, I've revamped the rhythm system 🤯 (like... again! 🤯) Don't freak out, though. Surface level gameplay-wise, it works mostly the same as it did in the last demo, so you won't have to re-learn much. I just needed to redo some things so it'd be easier for me to work with in the long-run while developing the rest of the game. Way less headaches await me now when working on new levels. In the process, I was also able to incorporate some neat new aspects to it and make the core aspects of it better. If you're familiar with older rhythm games, it's now a tad closer to what the dog was doing.

The opponent's icon has been covered up to avoid spoilers. I might be updating all of the character icons soon, actually.

I still plan to revamp the game's tutorial at some point. Something I've noticed is that often, new players don't seem to understand the purpose of the beat dots. Initially, I thought the idea that "on the beat dot = on beat" would come as second nature to new players without need for explanation. However, I hadn't considered that many players are likely to be more familiar with rhythm games that don't even have beat dots in this manner, so they're probably inclined to focus more on getting as close as possible to matching the order of the suggested inputs, and in this game, even at the cost of being off-beat if they aren't keeping up. So, I think the most important thing I need to emphasize when I give a new in-game explanation of the mechanics is the beat dots and really getting new players into the mindset of prioritizing the tempo. I think I should also have the tutorial's gameplay portion try to discretely get the player used to the control scheme to help people who haven't particularly memorized where all of their controller's buttons are without looking. This'll probably result in the tutorial song shown in the demo being replaced in the full game. I do still like its instrumental though, so maybe that will be repurposed for another game feature, at least.

There's probably some guy out there who just REALLY loves Astral Advisory as the tutorial song that will be very upset to hear this. In solidarity with them, I've depicted their enthusiasm with this rather silly image I've created.

As for other levels, now that I've got the updated rhythm system up and running, the 3rd rival battle of act 2 is almost complete. If you didn't like the Pow-Notes in Supastar Tennis, you might not like me very much after this! So far, I think this level has some of the best and most ambitious animation work I've done yet, so I hope you'll look forward to it. Not sure when I'll show a gameplay preview of this level, but I probably will at some point.

Also, I've made a new logo for the game! I'll gradually be phasing this one in to replace the old one, but until the full game releases you'll probably still see the old one hanging around too in some places.
