Synopsis: India Opal Buloni moved into a trailer park in Naomi, Florida with her father. While in the Winn-Dixie supermarker, Opal sees a dog wrecking the store, which she claims to be hers even if it is not, and takes it home. The story continues along side Opal and Winn-Dixie.
Independent activity: Gloria Dump has a tree filled with empty bottles that represent her past mistakes linked with alcoholism. Students will then take plastic bottle, add some paint, and shake the bottle to cover the inside with paint. Then, on a piece of paper, students will write a past mistake or regret they have and place it inside the bottle. The bottle will then be hung up above their desk, and when the school year will end, the students will take their bottle, and reread what they had written on their piece of paper.
