It is true that San Francisco is allowing tattoo studios to reopen June 29. Berkeley on the other hand is following Alameda counties guide which puts us in either mid-late July or mid August. This is very disappointing. We appreciate all of our clients that have been so patient during the last few months. This image really shows how I feel. I was going to start this post with, “I would like to take a moment to support…”, but then I realized that movements like Black Lives Matter, LGBTQ rights and ALL human rights movements require not a moment of support but a lifetime of action. It is not enough to share words of support, we must live it, we must fight on the side of equality and justice. Ritual Tattoo is choosing to fight back against the heavy hand of police brutality, mass incarceration and all examples of social inequality and discrimination against POC. We recognize our privilege as a white owned business in Berkeley and we will use that privilege as a platform for delivering messages of love and equity. This starts by EDUCATING ourselves and others with anti-racist resources. We are committed to joining the masses in contacting local and federal representatives and demanding not just reform of the current police force and institutions that enforce systemic racism, but a REVOLUTION aiming to transform the system entirely. This includes VOTING. Vote. the. fuckers. out. We will not accept notions of “non-racism” and will confront those that say racist things and support racist agendas. We will check OURSELVES and recognize that we are also guilty of perpetuating racism though it may not have been conscious in the moment. We will no longer be editing photos in a way that lightens the background and people's skin in order to increase contrast and highlight the tattoo. We realize that this isn’t a true representation of ink on skin of all shades and is a form of whitewashing. We will fight for the right to LIVE and celebrate the right to LOVE. Let us not go peacefully into the war against hatred, let us rage on, powered by experience, education, grit and anger. “Fists up, fight back”-unknown. This is not a world I want my daughter to grow up in. This is not a world I want ANY child to grow up in. My wife’s graduate community at Berkeley has compiled an awesome list of literature, petitions and organizations to donate to and join.
