Sponsored Content
The role of journalism today is to spread news around the world. Sponsored content fulfills the intentions of journalism, but in a different way. Sponsored content spreads news while advertising for other companies.
Consumers should know that journalism websites make their money from ads and sponsored content. Ad companies pay websites to sponsor click ads and other content on their websites.
Sponsored content that attracts large audiences will be most successful on websites. Content that is not good annoys the consumer and user. An example of this would be pop-ups that a website sponsors.

Participatory Culture
As a huge fan of Breaking Bad, I have seen many uses of the story and characters outside of the show. From paintings and drawings to halloween costumes, the show is everywhere. Along with real life examples and displays of the show, there are many examples of fan fiction on the internet.
dailydot.com hosts a page with the best Breaking Bad fan fiction. Many people post their opinions and alternate scenes of the show. The alternate scenes created by fans do not take away from the original script, but rather add details that could have improved the show. They add more connection between the characters, both main characters and secondary characters, to show more of who they are. These scenes hold the same characters that the viewer is drawn to, but change who they are.

TV Review
The Modern Family episode “Connection Lost” has a creative layout different from any other TV show I have seen. The use of the computer screen in this episode is the first time I have seen this technique to run the whole episode. I really enjoyed how the different Face Time calls created the episode.
I love Modern Family as a show in general, but this episode really caught my attention due to the different layout. I do not look for specific things when I watch TV, but rather the overall feel of the show. This may include a lot of little things like plot, visuals, and genre, but I can just feel when I enjoy a show. The plot and visuals in this episode were different, and I like change.
I also liked the small amount of commercials that were shown in the episode. Commercials do not play a big role in my TV viewing choices, but it was nice to have a minimal amount.

John Green, creator of Sci-show and Crash Course, explains how his success as a large Youtuber is not due to ads on the website. He says that he and his brother have become successful on Youtube because of fundraising and donations to their channels. Green cares more about what the viewers want to see, which is video content. Ads on Youtube act as a distraction from the content that viewers want to see. He wants advertisers to target younger audiences and have them become more involved with the website and videos rather than creating these “distractions”. Youtube communities would bring a different kind of support to the site. Communities would bring together large groups of people to support ideas. With the amount of social media being used today, communities can grow within a couple days with a lot of support.

W1 ASSIGNMENT: View this video, from YouTube’s pitch to advertisers. What challenge does John Green claim YouTube poses to traditional advertising models, and how does he propose advertisers can continue to be meaningfully involved with YouTube? Answer, then consider this pitch from the advertiser’s perspective. Why might clients be excited about the prospect of sponsoring a “community”? What might be difficult about demonstrating return on investment for this kind of advertising? Less than or equal to 300 words.

This Gif depicts Clint Dempsey, a soccer player for the US. He shows a great sense of pride and excitement after scoring a goal for his team. As we discussed today in class, sports and competition are a great part of the American Ideology. Dempsey is a symbol for both the United States and pride of the country. He is pumped that he has achieved such a feat for himself, and even more importantly, his country.

I chose to take this seminar because I have not had a lot of experience in the communication field. I am also unsure of what my major will be as I enter college. I believe that this seminar will help me decide what my undecided major will be. My goal is to gain exposure and experience in this field to provide me with a basis for making better decisions concerning my college major and future career.
