Greenhouse Talks Venice, May 25, 2018 The Embassy and General Consulate of the Kingdom of the Netherlands are producing, in collaboration with Het Nieuwe Instituut, the third edition of the Greenhouse Talks program that will take place at the Rietveld Pavilion during the days of preview of the 16th. Mostra Internazionale di Architettura of La Biennale di Venezia This new edition will take its cue from the theme proposed by the directors of the Venice Biennale’s Architecture Exhibition, entitled “Freespace”, and will develop a reflection around that of the Rietveld Pavilion, commissioned by Het Nieuwe Instituut, which focuses its exhibition on "Body, Work, Leisure". The conversation is scheduled on Friday, 25 May 2018 (timing to be defined yet). The curator, who will also play the role of conductor, and 5 high-profile guests chosen among internationally renowned architects, critics and scholars will lead the conversation. This is an opportunity for extending the debate with leading figures in world architecture on emerging issues related to the architectural profession. The initiative, which has accompanied the Biennale since 2012, is characterized by a light format and the adoption of an extremely agile, dynamic and open method of conducting the event, through which the conversation is facilitated between speakers and the relationship between them and the audience, mainly composed of architects and journalists, encouraged. The Greenhouse Talks are intended as a biennial reflection on the profession of the architect. In 2018 we will focus on the concept of Free Space and especially how the ongoing demographic shifts and digital revolution will affect jobs, life, free time and build environment. The burgeoning economic and demographic evolution that the world has experienced in recent decades and the rapid technological acceleration do not seem to have been matched by an equally vigorous improvement in the living conditions of so many human beings. The reflection on the relationship between man and work, with what has been called, up to now, leisure time, opens to the observation of fields that are subject to profound mutations and closely connected to each other: from the consequences of automation to the introduction of massive artificial intelligence, from energy issue to environmental mutations linked to climate change. All this outlines a scenario in front of which a reflection on the centrality of man and his physical and mental spaces is necessary. A reflection that is renewed if compared to the paradigms that have guided architecture in recent decades. Architecture can make a real and lasting contribution to humanity, as Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara say, also by revealing unexpected areas of use of the designed spaces or by offering a beneficial involvement of people.

The Cass, London Metropolitan University presents School/Work: Architectural Conversations between Pedagogy and Practice, a new exhibition that focuses on the relationship between the theoretical world of university and the applied world of practice and making in architecture.

The exhibition features the work of five award-winning architects who teach at the school: Assemble, Caruso St John, Cottrell + Vermeulen Architecture, Feilden Fowles Architects and Takero Shimazaki Architects. School/Work presents architectural models, drawings, photography and archival material exploring how studio culture meets academia.

The Cass is known for its “grounded-in-reality” attitude to teaching architecture, which is a direct influence of the many architects tutoring at the school. Each of the exhibiting practices leads an undergraduate studio or postgraduate unit, with their skills as professional architects translating into the diverse teaching and research approaches that contribute to The Cass’s unique character.
