I've been seeing a lot of posts the last couple of days, each along the lines of "your socialist community-driven utopia shouldn't include you just sitting on your ass doing a hobby" and something about them keeps rubbing me the wrong way:

None of them are acknowledging the people who want that lifestyle because capitalism treats us as a useless drain on resources. Those of us who are disabled and CAN'T just Do The Work That Needs Doing, and who want to live in a world that doesn't punish us for it.

I want to be a part of a community where my needs can be met without them putting a financial anvil on my family. A community that says "hey, we value what things you bring to the table and it doesn't matter that most of those things are intangible." One that tells me I have worth even though I can't be relied upon to do more than half a day's light work once a week. You know?

There's a nuance here that those posts are missing.

thinkin about my (openly gay) lit professor today saying, “one of my favorite historical anecdotes is the time that Oscar Wilde was in America, at the same time that Walt Whitman was active and writing poems about sticking his tongue down other men’s shirts, and Wilde went to Whitman’s house exactly one time and spent several hours there, and ever since all these historians have been like ‘what could they have been doing???? it’s such a shame we’ll never know...’ and I just.... we know. the only question now is who was the top.”
