This is a compilation of protest music, chants, and speech clips made by Chances with Wolves. I’m interested in the weird little gems that are in support of particular movements and almost sound like a commercial, like the Progressive Labor Party song. The themes that run through this are anti-capitalist, anti-State, anti-racist, pro-worker, pro-peace, pro-human rights.

1) Egyptian playing cards from 1500. The suits in the Islamic Empire were coins, cups, swords, and polo sticks.
2) The second set is from Northern Germany, called single-headed Schwerterkarte playing cards. European playing cards emerged from the Islamic Empire, though “it’s thought” that playing cards originated in China. Europe changed the Islamic symbols of scimitars and cups into graphic representations of Kings, Queens, Jesters. This reminds me of the way Christians represented their holy figures in human graphic forms, whereas Muslims did not condone iconography of Allah and used symbols, text, and designs to depict holy figures. In Germany, Italy, Spain, and some other European countries, it was traditional to not have Queens in the deck of cards.
3) These are traditional English cards from 1827, which look a lot like the ones we use here in the U.S.
4) German Art Nouveau cards printed in Attenburg, 1900. These do the mirrored reversal thing that we’re familiar with today.
5) These are Russian playing cards with Mayan imagery, 1960s. It is interesting to note how playing cards from the beginning were a part of trade and even these cards appropriate elements of a culture distant in both time and space.
*******
In looking into the history of graphic design on Wikipedia, I found that it’s extremely broad. I’m interested in playing cards, tarot, stamps, etc. because of the way these objects pass through hands and are used to send messages, earn/win money, and make predictions. They are common objects that are adorned to convey different meanings and also to represent their places of origin. I can see a thread here in these pictorial messages with logos and branding and also with family crests and flags.

Not sure what the format for posting on the blog is yet, but I just stumbled upon this graphic designer doing some really cool work! I was really inspired by this graphic design project by Rima Massasati after reading about it on the tumblr @womenofgraphicdesign. I love the geometric and art historical references in this work. As well as its mission to raise funds for Syrian refugees.
check out her website for more images of the project.
