I love when media has its own stories within it. It's a good way to convey information within the media, and adds so much depth to the world.

Who is interested in the stories, what do they think about them, let's the characters be fleshed out more because of the initiative the characters have when interacting with a story.

The stories can also tell a lot about the themes or what is important in the world. It can be used to give the audience a better understanding even if the characters themselves never learn the information.

I really enjoy how Meghan Whalen Turner includes the stories of the gods in her Queens Thief series to let us learn about Gen and how the gods influence his life. Featherman in Persona 5 including the optional game used to raise stats is a really good way to look at Goro Akechi's character. In Avatar the Last Airbender, the ember island players are a good look at the normal citizens of the fire nation and how they view the outside world. In Ace Attorney, the Steel Samurai give a different look at the characters especially Miles Edgeworth.

The stories also provide levity to what is going on and it works best when the information to gather is optional. A filler episode, optional dialog in a game, information that does not progress the story but makes it a richer world to experience if the reader/watcher/player cares enough to look.
