2807QCA Task 05 Portfolio - The Set FINAL After editing and going a few re-touches, I decided I could not do anything else to make the image better. For this shoot I had the same idea and was looking at the same artists and photographers as my last set. But it still didn't quite go to plan and did not turn out how I would have hoped it to. Nevertheless, I did try my best and put a lot of time and effort in reaearching and planing but I think creating and building sets is not my 'thing'. I am more interested in people, fashion and design. There is a difference between shooting a 'real set' such as an interior design kind of photo then building it from scratch. I think I work better with those kind of spaces. If I ever tried shooting this again I would probably shoot it on location, with and including real furniture and props. Overall, I'm not really happy with this image and how it turned out. I know for sure that I can do better but this time I didn't have enough time (because of all my other uni work) and space available. So in the future I know how to handle these kind of situations and time management.

2807QCA Task 05 Portfolio - The Set Shoot In this shoot I experimented with different lighting techniques and moved and added more props. I tried placing small scrunched up paper that would portray thrown out rubbish. Then I added some grass and leaves to see what it would look like. Towards the end I realised I did not really like the 'messy' kind of look. So I kept with the simple and minimal look. My initial idea was to have a very bright and crisp photographs like the images from the artist Simulsynced. This didn't happen for a few reasons: - If the image was light very bright then the carboard cut outs would look obvious and not realistic. - I did not have time to create that kind of image without having to spend hours in post-production. - The cardboard was not cut perfectly so it wouldn't have suited that kind of picture.

2807QCA Task 05 Portfolio - The Set Studio Set Up I created the brick wall with carboard, I cut horizontal and straight lines throught the carboard to create that brick effect. The white door was also cut out from the cardboard box and I had specifically painted it white. The door doesn't really look as realistic as the wall. There is another carboard cut out to be placed underneath the wall that represents the ground. There was one carboard that had a circle cut out in the middle. So I was curious to see what would happen if i put it in front of the light. The result was pretty cool and made a massive difference to the image. It created more of a moody effect and environment to the image. After changing the lighting completly, I changed my idea as well. This time I decided to go for a rustic kind of back of the alley look. The lighting reminded me of those areas of town. Settings; Studio Light: 8.0 ISO: 1600 Shutter Speed: 1/8 Apeture: 5.6 Focal Length: 47.00 mm

2807QCA Task 05 Portfolio - Fashion FINAL So for this shoot first I was thinking of doing something with a colourful background. Then when I went to edit some of the images with the different background, it looked okay but I felt that it was a bit too much for this particular image. I chose this image as my final image because I liked the movement of the skirt and at the same time together with the moevement of the body. I like how the arm is also moving together with the flow of the skirt. The poses in this shoot were very inspired by Paul Jung. The pose creates a very energetic and strong vibe to the photograph. I wasn't very sure wether to keep that one foot there or add more skirt to that specific area. Overall I like this image although I don't think it is any different to a typical fashion shot that is trying to sell clothes. I would see this image in a teens magazine such as Teen Vouge and/or Covergirl. Usually I am a person who likes to be different and I would like people to be able to dinstinquish my photographs amongst others.

2807QCA Task 05 Portfolio - Fashion Studio Set Up The set up for this shoot included a beauty dish which was positioned above the subject. A rectangular softbox to light the full subject. There was also reflectors on each side to maintain the background white and bright. Settings: Softbox light: 7.0 Beauty dish: 5.6 ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: 1/160 Apeture: 4.5 Focal Length: 24.00 mm (I apologise for forgetting to take photos of my actual set up when I did my shoot. I know it's a bad excuse but I was stressed and I only had 3 hours to shoot)

2807QCA Task 05 Portfolio - Fashion In this shoot I tried a few different things. The top four images are like high key, It's a very typical kind of commercial photograph. In post I experimented with a few different techniques. As I was inspired by the photographs of Erick Madigan Heck and his colourful images. So I tried adding a bright background, in contrast to the bright red and white outfit. The movements and poses are also inspiration taken from Paul Jung. Red is a very energetic and powerful colour so I wanted to add that into the images as well. I think this shoot was all about experimenting and trying new things. The image on the bottom, center is a low key, dark image. Unlike the other photographs, this image is still and quiet. It does not have movement and doesn't involve a lot of colour. Although this might be a good image, it is kind of irrelevant to this whole series and doesn't go well with the resr of the images.

2807QCA Task 05 Portfolio - Fashion Since I wanted to try something new for my portrfolio, I thought of doing something different and colourful for my fashion shoot. I came across Erick Madigan Heck's work and I thought his work is amazing. His use of colour and lighting makes the images look flat and one dimenssional but at the same time has a lot space to the images. From the other photographers I took inspiration the poses and use of light. Erick Madigan HeckL Fashion photographer Erik Madigan Heck celebrates beauty in an industry in which, he’d argue, beauty is especially difficult to address. His work’s otherworldly nature—achieved by pairing an uncanny flatness with vibrant contexts—rises to the occasion. Using highly saturated hues, the 33-year-old fuses models, whose backs often face the camera, with their surroundings in a pure, nonhierarchical manner that brings the entire picture to life. https://maisondesprit.com/ Joe Bulawan: The work showcases a strong modern style and deep understanding of light and form. Through a solid respect for design he creates stark imagery with graphic elements and negative space. http://www.joebulawan.com/ Craig McDean: VOGUE US, May 2014. 2807QCA Task 05 Portfolio - Portrait FINAL As I was going for that minimal and simple aesthetic, I think I have acheived that with this image. It reminds me of a sculpture, the photo has a surreal and mysterious vibe. It is calm yet chaotic. This photograph kind of portrays who I am in some ways. I am a minimalist, I tend to be a quiet person, as an introvert I spend a lot time alone. Being alone does not make me feel lonely or unhappy, it is a state of calmness, it is a way to get away from the crazy world. The reason why I started taking photos was/is because I am not a very verbal person. Neither can I write, I cannot express my feelings and emotions into words. Words are can become difficult for me. But I am creatove and I have a lot of ideas. So that is why I take photographs, to express myself in another way/form. I am happy with how this photo turned out althought I am not sure if it fits in with the rest of my photos from my portfolio.

2807QCA Task 05 Portfolio - Portrait Studio Set Up The studio set up for this shoot was pretty simple and straight forward, nothing too complicated. All I had was a square softbox above the subject, kind of angled on the right. I had another light, lighting the background to make sure the background was clean and white. Settings: Softbox Light: 6.0 ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: 1/200 Apeture: 5.6 Focal Length:32.00 mm

2807QCA Task 05 Portfolio - Portrait Shoot In this shoot I was mainly focusing on the female figure as a hijabi female. I wanted to accentuate the figure in a kind of abstract and geometric form. As I have previously mentioned I aim to photograph the muslim female in a distinctive and unique way. Thee are photographs of myself because I think this series is quite personal to me. I wasn't really sure how I could direct someone else to do the same. I think by having the minimalistic, black and white photograph it considers an extremely subjective concept, leaving interpretation and meaning up to the viewers perception of the work.

2807QCA Task 05 Portfolio - Portrait Currently I am very inspired by the minimalistic, simple and abstract photography and fashion. I love the dark silhouette/figure against the crisp white background. Minimalism cuts out all the unnecessary information and “junk” and bares it all down to the essentials. The end product is either something you are astounded or underwhelmed by. A photographer who shoot this kind of photographs is Paul Jung. Paul Jung is a New York-based photographer. Armed with a background in architecture, graphic design and art direction, he successfully focuses on fashion photography – with a certain minimal twist. Paul manages to transform models into minimalist sculptures really, finding art fragments in the ordinary. http://pauljung.co.uk/ Miguel Goni Aguinaga: Miguel Goñi Aguinaga, born in Pamplona in 1991, has developed his professional activity as a photographer and audiovisual producer since 2013, where he combines professional works with personal projects. https://www.miguelgoni.com/black-white-1/

2807QCA Task 05 The Digital Portfolio - Still Life FIANL As I mentioned previously that I wanted to create an image that contains my parents anitique things that they have collected. Basically I wanted to make an image that represents my pparents and how they came to be. Although one might not be able to tell but this photograph is very personal. The blue and white jars are from Iran. This came from when my dad used to live in Iran in the 90's. The book on the right is a religious book. This books represents both of my parents because they are very passionate and are strong beilievers of Islam. I added the flowers because flowers portrays love, passion and beauty. I would see this image in an art magazine, interior design or fashion and lifestyle magazine. This could also be placed in a museum wall for different viewers.

2807QCA Task 05 The Digital Portfolio - Still Life Studio Set Up My set up included an umbrella and a softbox and a diffuser sheet. I first tried shooting with the umbrella light but the image was too bright. I realized the umbrella light just spread the light around the whole area. So I switched to using a square softbox light. Then it was suggested to use a light diffuser hence this is why I have the white diffuser fabric hanging from the two lights. This created a more soft and diffused light that just wraps around the objects but still has contrast in the image.

2807QCA Task 05 The Digital Portfolio - Still Life Shoot For this shoot I experimented with a few lighting techniques. The first image is with natural light coming from the door on the right. I didn’t really like this because I wanted the light to only hit specific parts of the photo. I re-arranged the objects a few times and tired shooting from different angles to see what looked better. Like the photographs of Evelyn Bencicova, I wanted to arrange my objects to be spread out across the table. I laid the green and brown material on the table underneath the objects. This is because this material/big scarf is also from my mother from Afghanistan. So I wanted to somehow add it to the photo. I felt the best way to do this was to place it on the table so that I it didn’t look like the objects are floating in a black void.

2807QCA Task 05 The Digital Portfolio - Still Life This time for my Still Life I want to create a kind of traditional/ old fashioned photograph. I like the natural and effortless set up but aesthetically nice. My parents own quite a few vintage things that they have kept from living in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran. I want to put these things together in one space to produce a nostalgic and evocative feeling/ atmosphere in a romantic way. Some of the photographer that inspire me for this shoot: Evelyn Bencicova A Bratislava based photographer. In this series she is showing beautiful and artistic (an) organic still life photos of animals, flowers and food. https://www.behance.net/gallery/38807477/an-organic-(still-life) Anatoly Che Creative images created from the most ordinary of objects, which consistently features precise composition and refined lighting. https://500px.com/anatolyche Tatiana Skorokhod Tatiana Skorokhod creates the kind of still life photography that initially looks like a beautiful painting. Carefully placed objects make this piece a work of art. https://500px.com/tskorokhod

2807QCA Task 04 The Set - FINAL After hours of editing and compositing the image now looks like this. In post I added a filter to make it look like an oil painting because I felt like it needed something to make it somehow better. Then I went and added some fog to make it look like a windy and foggy night. I also composited the snow from different areas from different images. I think it's much better then what the original photo looks like. I had fun editing and finding new tools and ways to create this image. I actually learnt about new tools and techniques in Photoshop that i didn't know about until now.
