My personal goal is to try and make fanfic binding as accessible to everyone as possible, so here are some resources on how to make a fanfic hardcover for under $25.

This is a barebones bind for the broke college students and such. Happy to field questions, too!

Here's a proposed budget breakdown:

Loosely organized thoughts:

Fanfic bookbinders often share typesets amongst each other. Never pay for a typeset for a fanfic.

You'll hear a lot about grain direction for your printer paper, but as a newbie on a budget without your own printer, settle for some nice 92 bright paper. If you like the hobby, splurge after but expect to pay at least 2-3x more for short grain paper.

Printing is a pain because some copy shops won't let you print intellectual property smut, and it's very expensive. You are better off bartering instead or looking for a free printer on Buy Nothing.

You know the thick paper wrapping that comes with online orders? It's a good weight for endpapers if you need to scrounge. Paper grocery bags or gift bags (birthday presents) might work, too.

Ask your local library to give you covers from books they are throwing out. Ask for outdated textbooks (those covers are built like tanks) or three-ring binders that are too busted to be binders anymore.

Obtain a used book that was mass produced (so your destruction of it does not impede anyone's access) and maybe even become a little vindictive with it.

If you can afford it, I recommend the Olfa SVR knife (~$10)

If you can afford it, upgrade your ruler to a t-square.

“By your smile, I can assume your lateness isn’t to mean Camelot faces grave peril?” Gaius says, barely a question but nonetheless leaving Merlin with much to answer for.

Merlin enters looking dishevelled – not unusual, but largely not a good omen either. His shirt is untucked, hair mussed, and neckerchief in hand. Its absence reveals perhaps the most telling sign of last night’s activities, fresh and stark on his throat’s pale skin.

Merlin’s face turns sheepish, but Gaius can see how he’s still fighting off a grin underneath. The boy’s in no hurry to share his recent whereabouts; frankly, Gaius doesn’t want to know. He does, however, want Merlin to understand how worried he’s been.

“Next time,” Gaius begins, “it might be courteous to let me know when you intend to spend the night elsewhere. I haven’t slept.”

Merlin looks genuinely guilty this time. “I didn’t think–”

“–that I’d worry? You’re the biggest magnet for trouble in the seven kingdoms, Merlin. All I do is worry about you.”

“I’m sorry. We were drinking, one thing led to another, and–”

Gaius raises his hand in a halting gesture. “That is quite enough. I knew this would happen sooner or later, and I took the liberty of preparing your – ahem – bed partner something appropriate.”

He retrieves a glass bottle from within the folds of his sleeves. The morning light filters through the watery contents.

“Uh, thanks,” Merlin says meekly.

Gaius nods before shooing him into the back room to sort himself out in time to serve the prince his breakfast.

Morgana watches Arthur grimace around his goblet for the umpteenth time. He’s only been making a production of it since they sat down to eat, and now that the plates have been cleared, she finally takes the bait and asks.

“Is there something wrong with your wine?”

“Not wine,” Arthur replies. “It’s this foul preparation Gaius prescribed me. It’s even worse than his usual hangover remedy, and not half as effective,” he complains.

Morgana leans forward and plucks the goblet from his hand, swirling the contents and taking an investigatory sniff.

“No, it wouldn’t be,” she says airily, passing the goblet back, “given it’s contraceptive tea.”

Arthur fumbles and ends up tipping the remaining contents down his front.

“MERLIN!”
