Marvin y Quetzal, the pair of Mexican-Venezuelan enfants terribles have been taking the Latin American catwalks by the collar and shaking them back to life through their sophisticated and edgy designs. This has put the young designers on the international map and their talent and attitude has been applauded by Marie Claire, Amelia’s of London, Trace and Nylon, amongst other publications, who have named them two of the most talented young Latin American designers. Marvin studied design in Venezuela and then worked as an apprentice to Libertin Louison in Paris. Quetzal studied fashion design at La Salle College in Montréal and at the Maison de France in Mexico. Their label, also named Marvin y Quetzal, is the result of a fashion crush between the two, who met at a party in 2004 and admired each other’s style…and the rest is fashion history in the making! Their original, colorful and risky collections are inspired by a wide range of references—from playful piñatas to op-art chess boards, from Mazahua indigenous pleats to Harajuku sky-high platforms, from ironic Hello Kitty’s to melancholy dragonflies— and the results are as baroque one season as they are minimal the next. The duo is currently very focused on Women’s clothing although their collections also include some very strong Menswear pieces and their attention to accessories always pays off—innovative jewelry and avant-garde footwear are the details to look for, already on their way to become collector’s items.
