Traffic pollution could be far more dangerous than previously thought, researchers say

Traffic pollution likely causes more than 11,000 premature deaths in Australia a year, new modelling by climate researchers has revealed.

The grave estimate from the study means that death from air pollution in Australia is 10 times more likely than a fatal road accident.

"With these high levels of mortality and morbidity impacts, we look to our leaders to make the decisions required to reduce the social, economic and human costs of vehicle emissions," co-lead researcher from the University of Melbourne Clare Walter said.

The study conducted by the Melbourne Climate Futures used a peer-reviewed New Zealand study of particulate matter — or PM 2.5 — and nitrogen dioxide levels, to assess the risk for Australia.

Coles and Woolworths offer to take on tonnes of soft plastic after REDcycle collapse

Australia's two major supermarkets are moving to take responsibility for massive stockpiles of soft plastics, following the collapse of recycling company REDcycle. The scheme was paused in November after REDcycle announced it could no longer afford to recycle the plastic it was collecting from the supermarkets.

The announcement followed media revelations of massive plastic stockpiles in and around Melbourne.

Victoria's environmental watchdog charged the company in December, alleging 3,000 tonnes of soft plastic were found across nine sites.

The collapse of the business and the pause on the scheme meant most Australians were left without a way to recycle soft plastic.

Nine infected at Melbourne hotel for homeless but site not declared Tier 1

Nine people in just three weeks have been infected with Covid-19 at a hotel used to accommodate Melbourne’s homeless, but infected guests are coming and going as they please.

Victoria's COVID exposure sites list grows as apartment complexes around Melbourne added

More than 1,000 exposure sites are listed by Victorian health authorities, with dozens more added yesterday.

Victorian COVID vaccine mandate to be introduced for state’s construction workers

Victorian construction workers will be required to be vaccinated for COVID-19.

Modest easing of Victoria's COVID lockdown rules to kick in from Friday night as state records 514 new COVID cases

One dead, another critical after serious crash at Melbourne Airport
