ANOTHER MISSION HILL FANART, FUCK YOU! My version of the French brothers in 2025. Kevin (43 yrs), an technology college professor and Andy (50 yrs) as an artist working at an indie animation studio.

Andy's pin facts: Bisexual flag pin (because I said so), a Stogie pin in honor his memory and a Not my president pin (because Andy is not a piece of shit!). the Papa roach t shirt it's just me being bias ( i'm into this band recently). Maybe i'll change it later.

what's "infantilizing disability" is assuming that just bc I carry a stuffed animal I'm not capable of making decisions for myself. or that having a stuffed animal makes me a less serious, adult person than you are.

I can really see Andy not wanting to tell his younger brother that he's a gay man or dating Jim because he might think Kevin would see him as a freak (influenced by both parents and the society at the time). Considering how extremely anxious Kevin is about certain topics, especially those of a sexual nature, Andy would be expected to react poorly and make a scene of it.

Andy and the not-so-close relationship with his parents.

Honestly, this idea came to me more as a theory, BUT I'm going to accept it as my personal opinion.

Anyway, clearly in the series, the French couple have a CLEAR AND OBVIOUS favoritism toward Kevin, and this is also shown by the teenager himself, and they are clearly discouraged or disappointed by the adult life their eldest son is living. With that in mind, my headcanon is this.

The French couple had Andy in 1975. Both parents are clearly first-time parents, but they were very prepared to give Andy a good education at home and at school. Despite their efforts, Andy was more of a creative child, perhaps even more distracted than the other children. He didn't care much about math or any boring subject his father always told him about when it could provide him with job opportunities. HE WANTS TO BE A CARTOONIST, inspired by the cartoons and comics he watched as a child. He was that kid who always drew his teacher slipping on a banana rather than listening to his adults.

Andy made this clear to his parents like an innocent child, but they didn't pay attention to his creativity and instead scolded him for it. That's when Andy felt belittled for the first time. Within this "problem," he was always a (forced) good boy.

UNTIL SWEET ADOLESCENCE ARRIVED, OH BOY.

Inspired by the underground world, the rebellious phase of other teenagers, and wanting to break away from his upbringing as a "mom and dad's educated kid" (as a quest to feel better), Andy began to experiment with alcohol, late-night parties hidden from his family, and the world of sex and his attraction to women. It was his space where he could be himself, forgetting his responsibilities and the scoldings of his strict parents. This was also the time when Andy met Jim and they began to get into mischief, despite the complaints of adults and teachers. Andy was known by several kids as the radical artist for his now more explicit and crude cartoons, and he already knew his future lay in being an artist.

The French couple didn't like this, but they still gave Andy several opportunities to mature.

Then Kevin arrived, and that meant starting over for both French parents. THIS TIME THEY WOULDN'T FAIL.

They tried again with Kevin, but they tried twice as hard as they didn't with Andy. Mother French became much more attached to her son, to the point of spoiling Kevin too much (Reference image where Kevin, on his birthday, is dressed up and treated like a king. In my case, Kevin is 11 here, while Andy is probably 18 or 19, given Jim's comment, happy to leave home so he wouldn't have to kiss his mama's boy younger brother's feet. I also have the fact that Andy went to a "low" college with Jim to study art or something similar just to spite his father or because he didn't get a scholarship to a better one). Meanwhile, Father French also gave Kevin the education to strive for a top-tier university, making him obsessed with getting into Yale.

Now that he's a fully-fledged adult living with his best friend far from home, Andy thought he could undo the idea of making his parents proud. THEY WON'T BE ABLE TO CONTROL HIM ANYMORE. HE CAN LIVE THE WAY HE WANTS.

But we know better. Throughout the series, Andy has shown himself to be a jerk with severe self-loathing and insecurity. He believes no one appreciates his art because it sucks. He sucks as a person because he thinks he's a loser. But that self-loathing shouldn't have come alone. Maybe his parents were too harsh on him to make him feel like a loser for not doing anything at 24.

Throughout the series, he comes across as "meh" or careless toward his parents and their opinion, BUT in the script for the last episode (episode 18), Andy opens up to his mother on the phone, saying:

Andy is talking on the phone, holding a small slip of paper. He sounds extremely sincere.

ANDY

Mom, I'm just lost without Kevin. I guess you never really know what you have until it's gone. Please let him come back to Mission Hill. I know that with Kevin here to help me, I can be the kind of son who would make you proud!

CLOSE-UP on the slip of paper that is, in fact, a check made out to Andy in the amount of $5,000. In the memo section are the words "I miss Kevin." Andy smiles.
