Put your education to work to address global challenges. On the Sibanye Cape Town program, you will serve with a community-based organization two days a week during the semester. These community-based learning sites let you make a difference in the ongoing transformation of South Africa through working on community education, health issues, gender inequities, sustainable living, youth education and more. The Sibanye Cape Town program, in conjunction with the University of the Western Cape, builds upon Marquette’s strong tradition of service learning. The program offers you the unique opportunity to increase your understanding of the people, history, culture and traditions of South Africa through integrated academic course work and direct immersion into the culture through community-based service. https://www.instagram.com/p/CE9TRtzHwHu/?igshid=14a4fxgzwne21

The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically affected the world this year. In South Africa, where Marquette’s Sibanye Cape Town program (formerly South Africa Service Learning) is located, over 500,000 confirmed cases have been reported so far (WHO). The month of March drew significant attention as parallel efforts across the world were enforced to further prevent the potential spread of COVID-19. Dr. Simon Howard, academic director for the Sibanye Cape Town Spring 2020 cohort remained onsite when students were strongly recommended to return to the U.S. back in March. Due to travel restrictions and personal and professional reasons, Dr. Howard has been doing his research and working with students remotely. The impacts of COVID-19 worldwide continue to affect all aspects of everyday life and wellbeing. The panel we have brought together consists of experiences and insights from Dr. Howard, Hlubi Hadeb, Melikaya Ntshingwa and Anne Marie Gunn, a Spring 2020 Sibanye Cape Town alumna. The panel will discuss from varying perspectives how the COVID-19 situation unfolded to how the community in Cape Town is continuing to rebuild after a post-apartheid government and during an unprecedented time. https://www.instagram.com/p/CE6wmd1nbSh/?igshid=4uvx98011bev
