Then the heart of Éowyn changed, or else at last she understood it. And suddenly her winter passed, and the sun shone on her. 'I stand in Minas Anor, the Tower of the Sun,' she said; 'and behold! The Shadow has departed! I will be a shieldmaiden no longer, nor vie with the great Riders, nor take joy only in the song of slaying. I will be a healer, and love all things that grow and are not barren.' And again she looked at Faramir. 'No longer do I desire to be a queen,' she said. Then Faramir laughed merrily. 'That is well,' he said; 'for I am not a king.'

But it was from the difference between us, not from the affinities and likenesses, but from the difference, that that love came: and it was itself the bridge, the only bridge, across what divided us.

now I’m thinking about Estraven’s line “I am glad I have lived to see this.” it’s one of my most beloved lines in the book. looking out over all that magnificent desolation, over what is almost certainly your own doom, and just being thankful that you’re alive to see it. and then with Genly Ai’s line about joy, about how during this cold and arduous journey he didn’t find happiness, but something much rarer than happiness, something that isn’t found so easily. because he was with Estraven and finally came to know him and love him. the world is cold and hard and cruel, but I am glad I have lived to be with you in it.

These staves he spoke, yet he laughed as he said them. For once more lust of battle was on him; and he was still unscathed, and he was young, and he was king: the lord of a fell people.
