Headcanon

I weigh the pros and cons of every social situations in terms of the stress that comes with it versus the need to communicate. That's what I feel is at the center of being an introvert -- the extra work that inextricably accompanies being social. It's having to do all the dishes before you cook. Anxiety adds a whole other sink load.

In my headcanon, extroverts don't weigh the pros and cons of any particular social interaction; they just go for it. It must be so liberating to deal with the consequences of interactions AFTER they happen.

I used to have a livejournal where I created an idealized version of myself who tells me, in condescending italics, everything I did that made me less like him. I know better now.

Introspective Restroom Text Post

I feel like my responses to social situations are getting worse. It's a tightening of the chest and a mild dissociation, my words end up sounding like gasps for air. And when I realize how unusual I must seem, I make my escape.

It's embarrassing behavior. I'm consciously avoiding social situations to not only avoid the stress, but the subsequent embarrassment that I'll dwell on for days. I never developed healthy coping mechanisms.

I've barely tried talking about it, and I think I felt more at peace when blogging was a bit more personal and less content based. So here we are.

On NPR they were talking to this guy who specializes in created languages, who does all the languages for like Game of Thrones, Penny Dreadful, and a bunch of sci-fi and fantasy movies.

I applauded when the interviewer asked the guy if he ever considered using obscure native languages because “It’s not like anybody would notice,” and he scoffed like “Are you asking me if I’m gonna take someone’s cultural heritage and ascribe it to aliens or demons or elves? Because the answer is no.”
