Please file under a literary lunch: A Tale of Two Salads. “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, … - in short, the period was so far like the present period [full of fresh vegetables] … in the superlative degree of comparison only.” This was not a novel lunch but beat the Dickens out of other options.
Dr. Mardy Grothe who publishes quotes, historical trivia quizzes, and more pertinently here greatopeninglines.com, may shudder at my bowderlization. I only try to reflect with good taste my lunch.

I served for most of the 1990’s in the U.S. Army Reserves in the medical corps not in the National Guard. Most of our “weekend warrior” tasks were mundane in a Combat Support Hospital.
Because of Bosnia ‘96, our unit was placed on active duty deployment as backfill for regular Army personnel which is our primary mission.
Such deployments are hard on the family. I was very lucky as my employer, Eli Lilly, was very supportive in terms of health care for my family and our income both of which usually take a hit during deployments. Thanks and a shout out to Lilly.
I was also lucky to be deployed to the Army hospital in Wurzburg where I made a good friend and enjoyed on weekends off many a Volksmarch or pick up soccer games.
I post this because to my knowledge there are only 2 reasons the National Guard is deployed. The first is to support regular Army units, as I did. The second is for natural disasters. They never train nor are intended to be deployed for law enforcement purposes.

President Trump has a new gift from President Putin after their summit in Alaska. Trump had said in a news conference on Air Force One as he started to fly to Alaska, he would be disappointed if the meeting ended without a ceasefire in Ukraine. Putin offered him these Russian flip flops and Trump flipped!

In the cave mines there are tenfold less bacteria in the air than in the most sterile room in a hospital, so it also helps people with skin problems. Again, 300 meter deep, but the temperature here stays pretty much the same the whole year round – around 22 Celsius.
For decades, hospitals have sent patients suffering from asthma, hay fever type allergies and various bronchial blockages to spend time in the dark and humid galleries of the mine, where the salt-permeated air is believed to have decongestant and curative qualities.
