Section 3 - Part 2
youtube
fig 2.5
For my second animation I’ve went for a mix of animation with live action. The video being Oasis – All around the world. My reason for this is because this is revolutionised the music industry in the sense that it’s rarely been seen before and there were also few film’s that had included animation with real time. In the video there is an extreme amount of detail put into the video and it is said that it took 24 animations 6 months to make (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_Around_the_World_(Oasis_song).
youtube
fig 2.6
The directors of the 7 minute music video, got their inspiration from The Beatles – Yellow Submarine video. Instead they have went a step further in 1997 by actually putting the band into Yellow Submarine.
I’m certain there was a hundreds possible thousands drawings made in pre-planning for this video as it is ever changing onto different scenes and different objects within each scene moving.
I created the Yellow submarine fairly easily (missing some minor details), in Maya. I feel the most challenging part would be to incorporate the animation with the real live action. Obviously, a green screen would be needed for the vast majority of the film, I think it’s fantastic how some scenes are shot to give a realistic feel to the video such as in the 0.8 – 0.20 second hen the submarine comes into course with the camera. A huge amount of credit must given to the directors of the film as it was made at a time were the quality of animation wasn’t particularly great and I feel the video really compliments the song.
Obviously with 24 animators taking 6 months to make one video it would be hard for myself to replicate however im sure now it would take a lot less of time to animate 20 years later.
One thing for me that didn’t work in this video is the lighting of it, it’s quite dark in many scenes which shows that it was possibly badly rendered. This actually takes away from the art of the video, in my opinion and it’s something im confident in in my own belief that I could make better.
The evolution of animation now in 2017 you could make the animations almost look surreal showing a huge progression. This could be something we could see coming into force in the next couple of years in the music industry, as gaming companies such as Call of Duty have already animated some big name actors/celebrities.
fig 2.7
fig 2.8
Overall, I think animation with live action is something that should be encouraged more and the proof is in the pudding as this song is one of the highest chart ranked number 1′s of all time.

Section 3
I am going to talk about the famous Playstation character and the game itself – ‘Crash Bandicoot’. Growing up with this game and seeing its been evolved into different gaming platforms most notably the upcoming reboot on PS4, this is my main reason for choosing this out of the unlimited options with 3D. The series has a total of 18 games and has shipped over 50 million copies worldwide, so to say it is popular would be an understatement.
fig 2.1
Im going to start with the character ‘Crash’, the franchise is tailored at at gamer’s of all ages. In my opinion his creators Naughty Dog have pulled of the perfect blend of coolness but also child friendly and I honestly can’t see too many people arguing with his features. The pull this of by his jeans (with belt) big runners, finger less gloves, spiked up hair and of course the daring name ‘Crash’. The makers at Naughty Dog have identified their target audience, so how do they go about making it?
Much like my animation albeit no comparison in stature, I’m sure Naughty Dogs creation wasn’t over night in fact, I’m sure the original plan was much different to how the ending piece (shown above )was. Like any 3D animation the foundations or a guideline in which how to make rig this character would have been made. One thing I’ve learned from my animation task that it is important to put yourself away from the idea of what you would want or like and apply yourself to thinking/focusing on what your target audience want. Crash bandicoot was introduced at time of new emerging technologies in game consoles and the PS1 was it’s stage so this character would have had to tick a lot of boxes in order for it too be a hit due to the competition of rival games/consoles, which is why I think it’s got the characteristics of a cool character that people want to cheer on. Drawing the character could be deemed as relatively simple as it’s body shape isn’t too out of proportion.
The colouring of the character is one of which that looks dangerous in a good way, his facial expressions like shown above show a bit of cheeky side to his character and this is complimented through his attire all round makings this character a very fun 3D animation that would certainly appeal to anyone who hasn’t played the game before this is apparent in the 50 million sales worldwide.
I could certainly give rigging this character a go and would be confident in doing so. The animation is a collection of polygons such as cubes and cylinders. I certainly it was worth debating that his face once started as a cube polygon, with the appropriate extruding and smoothing of different vertices done. The likes of the hands and the feet are merely adopted through someone elses and by inserting a plane of much like the face just insert the appropriate polygons for example a cylinder for the fingers, then adjusting the width and length of the cycling in the vertex feature too work around the perimeter of the finger.
As you see in the game the player moves very rigidly when moving forward, whether this is intentional I’m sure however, I do think for myself to create the skeleton of the body is very possible and he isn’t a very flexible character apart from spinning. I think the most challenging part would be to make sure the character doesn’t deform, adding in paint weights to the appropriate joints and make sure the joints are connected properly are very important.
fig2.2
This franchise is ever changing with the emergence of new technologies, so new designs would have to be made on software's such as Maya and 3Ds Max just to the game doesn’t become outdated.
youtube
fig 2.3
This is why PS4 have decided to remaster the game to revamp the old game. The trailer above shows the games (plot, moves etc) are still the exact same however, the quality has been given a 2017 gaming look.
This is why PS4 have decided to remaster the game to revamp the old game. The trailer above shows the games (plot, moves etc) are still the exact same however, the quality has been given a 2017 gaming look.
As you will see from the 2 scenes above the quality of the detail of the game has improved immensely which is great to see as the the game itself is great but gamers now have became prone to such high quality that old games like Crash Bandicoot are being taken for granted, hence the revamp.
So what would the industry professionals of Naughty Dog have to do to make it more appealing and revolutionise the franchise?
Simplicity of this game is what made this game so enjoyable and I say this as a fan of the game growing up. What you see is what you get with Crash Bandicoot, this game didn’t and more so now doesn’t need to be blown out of proportion as it would only lose its identity. Games like Crash and Super Mario are fantastic in that they are different as they’re from the one camera perspective which by the looks of things haven’t been changed in the Crash Bandicoot game.
youtube
fig2.4
When comparing the new crash trailer to an old one, you can really see the difference in quality in the short videos. After completing my own animation I would feel confident in recreating the scenes of crash bandicoot. The minor details of creating the wooden boxes, wumps and his face friend are all straight forward and are made more effective through sound effects when they come into contact with crash. A surface shatter could be applied to the box when it’s crushed by crash, a for texturing it also a straight forward process as there is nothing that can’t be made in illustrator when using this game.
Overall, If I were doing my assignment again I would certainly be going for this game as it’s do able and fun to create. The humor aspect of this game ties in well with the animation which is something I’d consider myself good at mixing. It’s a straight forward outlay but it’s very enjoyable and simple to recreate.

Overall
Overall I am extremely pleased with how my animation has finished. Prior to this task I no experience to Maya and as trialling as it was at the best of times I think my video speaks for itself in terms of production and skills used to create the 90 second clip.
My Pre-projection preparation is what made the video what it is and although I wasn’t quite sure of how it end up the skills I picked up before starting to create my project proved to be extremely helpful.
If I were to do this project again I would certainly confident in creating my own rig as I am now much more confident with the tools and terminology that comes with Maya desk. The fact that Maya is free for students is extremely helpful and because of this I could certainly see myself using it in the not so distant future as it won’t be leaving my desktop anytime soon.

Evaluation of 3D Animation
My video is now finished and published on YouTube, it is roughly 90 seconds long which for a beginner in animation is impressive. The content of the video unfolds exactly how I wanted to from the start with a few relevant introductions.
In my opinion how the story unfolds is one of which that will be easily to follow for anyone of any age. The camera’s and the angles they have taken up clearly make the animation what it is, the introduction of different camera’s at different places at the same time, gave me the opportunity to be critical on my own work and pick between scenes, options are always a good thing. The fact that I didn’t include many different angles is testament of my progression in Maya over the past 5 months.
The first thing you will notice is that I have opted against using the Maya text previously discussed. My reasoning behind this was because I simply didn’t like it and thought it took away from the backgrounds and the building.
I think including this at the end was much more fitting to the animation and it was much more visible to read. In comparison to this:
I have a host of great fonts collected throughout designing that I feel looked much better in the end film. I came up with the slogan ‘No Matter the Weather, No Matter your Mood’ as I thought it represented what this centre was about. As it’s open no matter what the weather is and going might even change your mood:
I think the audio and sound effects made the animation much more enjoyable and even humorous which is what I wanted to achieve for the video, the pace of the video works extremely well with the audios included. i included different paces in the video just so it wouldn’t bore the viewer with the slow motion part also creating suspense.
fig 1.28
The camera angles constantly switching made the video look more complete in the sense that it actually looked like an advertisement.
Which brings me on to my next point, the NCloth feature wasn’t needed.
This sequence made it that the NCloth (thankfully) didn’t need introduced in the end, I type this with a huge sigh of relief. I think the way I've incorporated this in looks fantastic and something in which kids will like.
Without saying a word I was also able to create a story line from nothing and give the viewers (particularly kids) someone to root for, the score board was also a great help in the story development.
I think how I’ve used the church spirals has worked really well also and people from the area will appreciate it this.

Creating the Video in Adobe Premiere Pro
Having recently used Adobe Premiere Pro (other assignment) and learning the fundamentals tools to creating a promotional, I thought it would be best carry out creating my video in premiere pro. As my story line has changed quite a bit due to the inclusion of more objects and characters it is impossible to stick to my original storyboard which is a good thing, as it shows that I’ve exceeded my expectations and went a bit in further in creating an animation. Now all it needs is edited to a good standard with the inclusion of audio and text in the pipeline.
I exported my files as PNG as I thought it was the best quality and on top of that the quickest to render in comparison to other formats such as avi and quick time.

Rendering
Now that I had all my animation in place with the cameras fitted in the right area, my scene was ready to exported through the process of rendering. This process was quite timely in the fact that it was really trial and error to try get the best quality exported file, I also had to do this 13 times which didn’t help the timing process.
I played about with the available render settings and ultimately found that Hardware was much more complimentary than the Software in terms of focus and lighting. As previously stated the timing took quite long and after experimenting with different formats to export with such as quicktime and avi’, I came to the realisation that png files was not only as good as quality but the quickest to export.
In total my the amount of files I batch rendered came to over 500 photos which for a short video is quite, but as there was 13 cameras which were rendering every frame it’s more understandable.

Using Cameras in Maya
The usage of 13 cameras was important for myself as it meant I could constantly make camera changes to the scene and create a more fluent video which I am delighted with. Having taken the inspiration from my video assignment I felt it was pivotal to change the camera angles of the animation in order to give a different perspective on the animation.
Most of the cameras were used and were placed around the area of the scene all with different purpose. There was a couple that really worked well when rendering and that was thanks to finding the efficentcy of new tools. Using the ‘CV curve tool’ I was able to create a camera which rotates around the curve, I did this one three occasions which for me have proved to be very succesfull and look fantastic when rendered. The three occasionas being, the opening scene of the building, the scene above which follows on from the first scene and the final scene.
I attached the camera by going into create>motion paths> attach to motion path. This was a very helpful exercise that I found on YouTube:
youtube
Attaching a camera to an object is also another tool which saved me much time as the camera tracks along with the rig which in this instance is the runner. By clicking by the object and the camera and hitting the letter ‘P’ this created this tracking scene in my animation.

Adding in a Fence
I added a fence around the perimeter as it made sense to due to the fact that there is a person running around the track which Is right beside the lough. It also helps put more emphasis around the football field. The basic use of cube polygons and cylinders help make the fencing, I added a nice brown showing it’s made of wood.

Using Text in Maya
I felt this as an appropriate time to use text for my animation, taking the lessons learned from my previous encounter with text I added a bevel to the animation to bulk it out.
After adding a light blue colour to the text, I placed at the doors of the building I plan to use this scene as my starting point almost like an introductory to the animation. I have placed the trophy above the the building as it gives the impression it is a place for champions (I plan on using this trophy later in the animation).

The Lough View Centre Building
I feel the colours of the real building are quite boring (see previous images) to animate on and as the animation is centred around this building, I feel it will in turn create a slightly bland animation which is not what I want I certainly know it’s not what the viewer will want as it will take away the fun side of animating.
.
fig 1.26, 1.27
I opted to go for a blue and yellow building, my reasoning behind this is that the local football club ‘Dungannon Swifts’ (who use the centre to train) colours are of course blue and yellow, the crests of both their youth team and senior team are shown above and as you can see they both emphasis the blue and yellow which are friendly colours so therefore I have decided to use them as the building colours.
What started of as a cube has now been transformed into this building, I extruded the faces on the side and above the original cube I then decorated in the colours of similar statures to the crests above.

Identity
fig 1.23
Now what my animation needed was identity, at the minute my animation begs a few questions with regards to what it actually is about. I found this perfect shot which represents the location of the lough view centre and coincidentally the centre is almost right beside the lough, making this a perfect picture to use in the form of a plane.
Above shows the lough photo inserted into my animation which I am delighted with, prior to adding this image I turned the brightness up and adjusted the contrast in the photo to stop making it look so gloomy as I wanted the animation to give nothing but a positive good quality message.
fig 1.24, 1.25
I feel my animation needed more to justify its belonging. Dungannon itself is a hill town and at the top of the hill like shown above you can see the spirals of the church, you can see these spirals from miles away and even more so at the lough view centre which is a brave distance away (if you look closely at the lough image previously shown you will see it in the distance), I therefore thought it would be a good idea to create this in my animation to give it more identity as people from the local area will immediately identify this and appreciate it.
I firstly started by creating the hills as it is in the distance (see lough photo) it makes sense to have a surrounding green area to emphasise that is in the distance.
I firstly added in a sphere and then I used the multi-cut tool to cut the mesh in half be selecting 2 parts of the sphere, which resulted in the image shown below:
I then duplicated this several times and manipulated the sizes of each to give a nice hill setting.
I used my initiative and remember I had previously made a building with a spiralling top in my pre-production phase. It was just a matter of adding a colour to the building a editing it slightly to look like the church in Dungannon. I Used different colours of greens on the hills just so it doesn’t look boring.
Im so pleased with the resulting setting and I am certain it will prove to be a hit with the locals as it will make my animation look recognisable, I am going to try and use this background as much as I can in the animation without really trying to put emphasis on it, if that makes sense.

Targeting the Demographic
I Didn’t want the centre to be limited in what it does as I know it has more to offer the common man so therefore I wanted to show off how it could be used a way to get fit. Stereotypically once again taking the fat rig to exploit, much like the JJ rig I just need to make it run but obviously in this case a little more slower.
The walk cycle exercise was a great help here for myself, as the finished runner looks very realistic.

Animating Fred
I took it upon myself to invite Fred the rig into the story a bit more. My intentions were that I wanted to give them impression that Fred was there in support of the little JJ rig when really he has no interest, that is however until it’s the ‘90th’ minute (shown on scoreboard) and he finally puts the paper down when JJ is through on goal. I also added a nice brown colour texture to the bench to indicate its made of wood.
By the end of my animation Fred will be jumping up with glee with his newspaper on the ground, which I hope will look quite funny and interesting.

The Striking of the Ball
Fig 1.22
The striking of the ball is something I feel holds quite high importance as I want to show it in a slow motion style scene, too add to the drama. I tried to emulate Wayne Rooney striking a ball and although this photo may not do it justice when in slow motion it looks like a real good shot. My particular focus was to mae the right arm wrap around the front of the rigs body in a flexible stance the left arm swings the other way, with the left foot following through.
My intentions here are to add in a sound effect were the foot strikes the ball which will look really good in slow motion.

Back to the NCloth
I then decided it was time to give the NCloth feature another go. I was having real problems with the ncloth feature in maya as when applied the whole net itself fell this even before the ball had hit it.
I then decided it was time to give the NCloth feature another go. After adjusting a few settings I was still having real problems with the ncloth feature in maya as when applied the whole net itself fell this even before the ball had hit it (this after me selecting the particles I want the ball to collide with).
I then Inserted a plane to make the ncloth hopefully dismantle the net.
After texturing it and going through the same steps it was a hopeful exercise.
As you can see both the net and the plane both collapsed and I was completely out of ideas which has unfortunately made me lose interest in this part.
