I did a little crafting this afternoon! It feels good to stretch my creative brain again! I've been wanting to make these trees ever since we moved to our new house (2 years ago) and finally found the materials at good prices. I've seen trees like this several places but they were all so expensive! Until now!!! I know you're thinking "Christmas Trees in April????" Let me explain... I bought the garland after Christmas on clearance and needed tomato cages to form the structure of the tree. It's pretty much impossible to find those in winter, so I had to wait. Well, I finally picked some cages up and began working. I used two cages for each tree to make them sturdier. I started by tying the tops together so they would form a nice point. Next, I started winding the garland around the cages. Every so often I would twist a piece of the garland around the cage. When I finished I made some festive Christmas bows. Now I just need to put some lights on and they will be complete!!!

For those of you wondering here is the recipe I used to create delicious apple butter.  This recipe came from my husbands grandmother.  Just a little disclaimer:  this takes a LONG time!! Get your crockpot ready to work!
  8 cups applesauce
5 cups sugar
1 tsp. cloves
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. allspice
Put applesauce in crockpot.  Cook about 8 hours on low or overnight.  Add sugar and cook on high for a little while.  Add spices seal in hot jars.
Of course I have this inability to follow a recipe exactly.  I substitute or change pretty much everything I make!  So here are the changes I made:
I started with homemade applesauce.  I would probably buy the applesauce next time and save myself the trouble of peeling, cutting, and slicing apples.  I cut out the sugar (my husband and I have cut dessert out of our lives the last two months and I didn't really want to throw all that hard work out the window!  I didn't have and allspice so of course left that out as well! I also doubled the recipe and I think that caused it to take WAAAAY longer.  The crockpot was on high for about 12 hours and then on low overnight.  All said and done it took nearly 24 hours from start to finish! After about 4 hours I took the lid off and let it cook, stirring from time to time.  I just kept cooking the sauce until it had the right consistency.  With 16 cups of applesauce the yield was 3 1/2 pints.  Hope this helps!!

Today we celebrated the incredible life of my loving Poppy. I had the humbling privilege of honoring him in song. Bottom picture, my Mimi was presented with the shells from the 21 gun salute. You will be greatly missed, but thankful you are free from pain. Looking forward to seeing you again soon! Love you!

A year ago today was one of the happiest and most terrifying days of my life, our sweet little Maddie was born. She spent the first week of life in the NICU because of fluid in her lungs. You would never know by looking at her now that she had such a rough start! She has been such a joy to watch grow and change and I can't imagine life without her. Maddie, if this year is any indication to what the future is going to be like with you, we are going to have a LOT of fun together! Happy Birthday my sweet little girl! I love you!
