They say that everyone has a "moment" in their career with #Habitat and for me... This was it. The moment we pulled up outside the house we had built two years prior. Never been so proud of anything in my entire life. We built this house in one week and now there's a family that lives there. We went to the door and the homeowner cried when she found out who were were. Lets just say... We cried too. Without our help she would still be living in a shelter. HELP ME, HELP OTHERS

If you don’t already know, Habitat has become a very important part of my life. Senior year of high school, I joined a Habitat trip to North Carolina and never looked back. I spent the next four years at the University of Hartford where I joined their campus chapter, later becoming Public Relations Chair and Vice President. During my time at the University, I was given the opportunity to participate in four Collegiate Challenges, forfeiting traditional spring break for the experience of a lifetime. I met many different people in over four states and help change lives for the better. Joining Habitat was a life-changing decision for me. It has become more than just a volunteer opportunity and has developed into a life-long mission.

I have been accepted into Habitat for Humanity’s program Global Village and will be traveling to Jordan for a week in November. We will be building or re-constructing a home for a Jordanian family in need. I will be alongside other like-minded individuals where we will become part of the mission to secure simple, decent, and affordable housing for all. Being given this opportunity means the world to me. It will not only expand my understanding of the global housing crisis, but it will help me to make a personal impact on helping to eliminate poverty housing.

The majority of Jordanians live on less than US$5,000 per year. Habitat began their work in Jordan in 2001 and is active in four rural villages and three urban communities, but they still need our help to continue providing housing. If there is one thing I have learned in my five years of experience, it’s that even the smallest action can make a big difference. This is where I need your help. The cost of the trip is $1,800 which is my fundraising goal. This includes my meals for the week, my place to stay and any supplies I need but does not include airfare, which is paid by each volunteer. Any extra money I raise goes directly to Habitat Jordan to help financially, even after our trip. So along with telling you about the next exciting journey in my life, I am also asking for your support. Even the smallest donation will help. $10, $20, whatever you feel you can do will make a difference and help me reach my goal. MY BIOGRAPHY

Marissa Giammarino is a 24 year old Springfield, Massachusetts native. She graduated from the University of Hartford in the spring of 2012 with a Bachelor's Degree in History. Her very first experience with Habitat was in 2008, her senior year of high school, when she participated in a Youth Build in Havelock, North Carolina with fellow students and faculty. As a freshman in college she joined The University of Hartford's Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter later serving as Public Relations Chair and Vice President. While attending the University, she participated in four Collegiate Challenges; Valdosta, Georgia twice, Concord, North Carolina and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Her junior year she co-led 25 students on her second trip to Georgia. She also worked for the Center for Community Service at the University, driving their community van which brought students to their work-study jobs and to volunteer opportunities in the Greater Hartford area. That same year, while serving as the Associate to the Vice President of Student Government, she helped create Hawks Helping Hartord. This program, supported by both the Center for Community Service and Student Government was a day long event that matched students up with various opportunities to volunteer in the community. Even after graduating, she still attends this event as an alumnus. Marissa has also volunteered with Kane's Krusade, an organization striving to help and educate Springfield residents about their dogs safety and well being. Last November she volunteered  at a "dog house build-off" where volunteers built dog houses for local families whose dogs needed a warm place to sleep. Marissa also volunteers with Greater Springfield Habitat for Humanity. Traveling to Jordan is just the next step in her adventure!
