i could write a million lines
about how the snow fell tonight
and how the lights reflected in your eyes
yes i could go on and on
about how that frost covered lawn
sparkled until it shone
and maybe im just intoxicated
but i'm nothing less than elated
because now im sure this has all been fated
and i'll stick by you forever if you let me

a sibling without a brother
a mother missing a son
you're gone and you've left nothing behind
except for everyone
i go to sign the guest book
and think of you again
look down at my hand
and imagine you're holding the pen
this city's always been cold
it seems freezing now
your absence hits
like a snowplough
and this poem is bad
because death is not poetic
grief hard to face
but it's better than being apathetic
i don't think i can leave you behind
don't think i can move on
until we meet again
beyond the light of dawn

i lay in a tub half full
look up through your man made waves
those lace curtains come crashing to the floor
of your battle ground stage
your fabricated motive
and your preemptive tears
fall into my porcelain tomb
and like the water, fill my ears
love marks on your neck
and scratches on your arms
did you think things through
before you came to harm
then your brow unfurrows
and you come back to reality
and that look of horror and regret
is the last thing i ever see

its coming to be that time of the year
for feasts and family and wine and song
i look forward to family christmas dinner usually
but its a new anniversary this year
the last time i ever saw you
i can't remember if i hugged you goodbye
but even if i did
the last time i held you will always be in the car with your urn in my lap
you're gone now and dinner will be quieter
the weather reminds me of you
snow at last christmas
and at your funeral a month later
it falls again this year like always
as quiet and constant as the sadness you left behind

you could cast a golden line
and tether a star to your heart
you could build a shade to dull the shine
and stake your claim like bonaparte
you could wrap my feet in leaden chains
and tie me to your side
you could give yourself control of the reins
and whatever else you decide
but the stars been dead a long long time
and the ropes begin to untie
the funeral bells begin to chime
and it's time you say goodbye

you always say you can read my eyes
see the fear and pain
that i've learned to hide
when i look to the water
i can't help but wonder
if you see anything else
than the sadness i'm under
can you see the joy
while i sit here with you
when salt sprays up from the waves
that the bow cuts through
we have dinner and wine
and the sorrow is easy forget
because you stand at my side
and we watch the summer sun set

i could drive out to the city
hide among the people there
i could run into the woods
and hibernate like a bear
i could lay very still
let the snow cover me up
i could seek shelter in a drink
fall to the bottom of my cup
i could try to forget
but i always remember
i can't stop time
i must face another november
