REFLECTION
Base on my overall experience on this project Ive learned a lot about my community and how our community acts on the hazards presented onto us. I’ve also noticed the different type of problems scattered around my surroundings and how I wasn’t able to see it back then. Since Marikina is only a small portion of the Philippines the scope of our place is small compared to the entire country. But that doesn’t mean we don’t experience the same cases with other places. The only difference is Marikina isn’t that much prone to such hazards but in places like Manila, Quezon, and Makati, the amount of hazards and calamities there are far more greater than what we experience here in our community.
If there’s any memorable lesson I’ve learned to my whole experience with this its the saying “be ready at all times”. Us humans we don’t hold the world, we don’t have any supernatural powers to know what the future holds us. Expect the unexpected, never be satisfied with the natural outcomes. Be smart, aware and critical about your surroundings.

COMMUNITY WALK
[ BEST PRACTICES ]
There are volunteer workers around the city that part takes in cleaning up the environment. They can be found cleaning almost every single time of the day just maintain the cleanliness of the streets.
Here in Marikina there is a unique way of segregating trashes, there are color coding for biodegradable and non biodegradable. The color of the ribbon tied to the trash bag is the indicator for which type of trash it is. Plus you can’t simply throw trash on any day you’d like to do since there are specific days you can’t throw a certain trash on the trash truck.

COMMUNITY WALK
[ SAFEST PLACES ]
The only safe place I’ve found in our community is this grass field located near a neighboring school. Its not filled with that much trash and it has the most greenery field out of all the places in Marikina.

COMMUNITY WALK
[ HAZARDOUS PLACES ]
Trashes are the most common hazardous thing scattered on the streets. Scattered glasses of bottles, plastics, the drainage being filled with trash, the creek filled with trash which in return releases a foul smell.
The wires on the cable lines are all tangled up and may cause to circuits malfunction or electric shock when it rains. Plus just by looking at the photos it already sends a unpleasant vibe to the viewer’s eyes.

KWENTUHAN MARIKINA
[ CAPACITY AND DISASTER MANAGEMENT ASSESSMENT ]
The Barangay offers a lot of department which helps specific cases the community needs. And within these department there are several volunteers that are willing to help one another for the betterment of the place. Other barangays offer help to those places who are in need and in return we too reciprocate the action given since we are all in one country and the best way to help one another is to help and care for each other.

KWENTUHAN MARIKINA
[ VULNERABILITY, ELEMENTS AND PEOPLE AT RISK ASSESSMENT ]
As said in the last post the Barangay aims to spread knowledge and awareness to the persons involved in the community in order to be prepared in this situations. We must be educated and systematic in or ways of means whenever this circumstances strikes on us. Despite Marikina not being affected that much by hazards, we still need to be prepared at all cost since we don’t hold our fate in our hands.
There is one specific hindrance that greatly affects the community regarding its preparation for a certain calamity, and that is no other than the politicians. The higher ups usually controls every move of the people involved in the barangay and there are some cases wherein the funds gathered by the community is supposed to be given to the people who needs it but the higher ups chooses to neglect these requests. This results to conflicts between the barangay officials and the politicians themselves.

KWENTUHAN MARIKINA
[ HAZARD IDENTIFICATION ]
As every places there will always be hazardous situations that we will encounter in our lives. Here in Marikina are less hazard in the vicinity of the area since our community is far from flood prone areas (unlike in Tumana, Provident and San Mateo) since Marikina is a high land so it isn’t much affected by it at all. We are not affected by by earthquakes and according to the interview, the Marikina Fault Valley is approximately 7-10 kilometers away from the place so it won’t do much harm as they like to say it.
These hazards can’t be avoided and therefore we should always be ready for it. The ways the community handle this preparedness is keeping up to date with the news on the television, phone or radio. There are rescue teams in the department, food and clothing are ready, there’s a boat if ever the flooding does get worsen.
The Barangay officials strongly recommends each of the member of the society should know how and what to do whenever these cases strikes us. Youth should be aware on what’s happening in their surroundings and the parents should be responsible in educating their children more about this risks to ensure their safety. Because a person who knows how, what, why and when is a person who will survive throughout the end.
