EDUCATION
by: Lofren Masancay
Education as of now serves as a basic need that can never be apart of someone’s life. It plays a vital role in shaping your future. Alvin Toffler, an American writer and futurist stated that the illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn.
Education is defined as ac social institution that formally socializes members of the society. It refers to the process through skills, knowledge and values are transmitted from the teachers to the learners. Subjectively, it develops in us a perspective of looking at life. It helps us build opinions and have points of view on things in life.
There are two types of education, Formal Education and Non-Formal Education. Formal Education is based in classroom and provided by trained teaching and non teaching personnel. Best example for formal education is primary, secondary and tertiary education. While Non-Formal Education is an organized activity that takes place outside a formal set up usually flexible, learner centered contextualized and uses participatory approach. Also, there is no age limit in this type for example the ALS program.
In the sociological perspective, education have manifest functions and latent functions. Under manifest function is where socialization and transmission of culture, skills and values falls in. Education helps in socialization because students are initiated into talking on societal roles and school is in fact one of the agents of socialization. It also helps in the transmission of culture since it allows younger generation to absorb information on what their society is about. Latent functions refer to the unintended functions that are brought about by the school environment e.g. courtship.

Socialization is when we adapt the behavioral concept and internalize the ideologies and culture of the society. It helps us Acquaintance is the main role and purpose of socialization. It acquaints us with the norms provided by the society or social group. It helps us prepare and become ready to communicate and participate in the society. To make us to become socially developed, we have these what we call “agents of socialization” that serves as instruments in transmitting and influencing the norms to individual to help in developing oneself.
The agents of socialization includes family, school, peers, mass media, and religion. Family is considered to be the most important agent of socialization as it where we learn first the things the members of family taught us since being a child. Aside from family, school is where we are taught by the educational institutions to be well-educated individuals. Peer-group is where we discuss issues and share common interests at the same age and level. Mass media is emphasized that it where we are socially developed of what we read, watch and listen. The goal of this is for us to be free from ignorance by providing us the information we need. Religion teaches individuals moral values and to have faith in God. By these agents of socialization, everybody can be socially inclined. It allows us to be capable of socializing with other individuals or social group.
