Before Her Appearance (1913). Frederick Carl Frieseke (American, 1874-1939). Oil on canvas. The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens.
Applying the last bit of ardent rouge to her lips before going on stage, a dancer sits on a stool in her dressing room, looking at herself in the mirror. This intimate scene was captured by Frieseke with a very tender, almost monochromatic palette of pink, pale blue, marble white, and an occasional patch of yellow. Created while Frieseke spent the winter of 1912 on Corsica, where he rented a house and sent for his favorite model Marcelle, who poses as the dancer. It was included in Paris Salon exhibition and was very well received. It was bought by Mrs. Gertrude Whitney Vanderbilt for her private collection.

1920 c. Opalescent sequinned tulle evening dress. It is of sleeveless white net having an overall pattern of overlapping concentric circles, a wide self-belt, slightly scalloped hem, and deep side slips. Being quite tunic-like, it would have been worn with a matching or contrasting underslip. Silk was usual under evening tunics and sheer evening gowns.
