Bayelsa State Student Leader, 7 Other individuals Arrested For Murder, Cultism, Armed Robbery > 9ja.
The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested the chairman of the Bayelsa State chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and seven other university students in connection with the alleged murder of a student, cultism, and armed robbery.
The NANS leader in Bayelsa State, Perewari Benjamin, a 400-level student of the Niger Delta University, Amassoma, was paraded along with the seven other suspects at the state command’s headquarters in Yenagoa on Monday.
The police identified the other suspects as Asari Enagob, Suoguai Bina, Ibe Ogbonna, Igbanibo Tari, Ekperi Kenneth, Kemefie Ebimene, and Chukwuma Lawrence.
With the exception of Mr. Lawrence, an Imo State Polytechnic student, the suspects are undergraduates of the Bayelsa State government-owned Niger Delta University.
Addressing journalists at the police command, Commissioner Asuquo Amba mentioned that 3 drivers - Ayo Kehinde, Jamiu Salahudeen, and Nwanya Chinonso - reported the suspects to the police for hijacking their autos and robbing them at gunpoint.
He said the suspects robbed Mr. Kehinde of one particular Techno phone valued at N10,000 and the sum of N50,000 cash while they also robbed Mr. Chinonso of N1,600 cash.
Mr. Amba mentioned the police recovered arms and ammunition from the students, which includes two locally-made single-barrel pistols, two rounds of live ammunition, five .9mm reside ammunition and some charms.
The police commissioner traced the death of an unnamed student of the Federal University, Otuoke, to student union elections at the Federal University, Otuoke, in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
"It is disheartening to note that the events that occurred at the Zone B election for coordinators of NANS took location at the Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa State, involving November 25 and November 26. It was a scenario whereby students representing universities and greater institutions in the South-South zone degenerated to the use of firearms that led to the death of a student," Mr. Amba stated.
"The students also involved themselves in robbery against innocent citizens," he added.
"This leaves 1 to wonder about the future of our good nation. The development calls for a drastic action to curb this menace and a comprehensive reorientation of our youths."
Mr. Amba recalled that when NANS zonal meeting was zoned to Bayelsa State, the police authorities took all vital measures in consultation with university authorities, saying they were able to style what he described as watertight safety measures.
He mentioned the police also collaborated with officers of the Nigeria Safety and Civil Defence Corps, the Division of the State Services and the military.
"We equally got an assurance from both the student union leaders and the Vice Chancellor that every thing was going typically and that there was no safety threat. In line with this, every thing was going incredibly smoothly.
"We ensured that vehicles coming in and going out of Bayelsa, especially buses conveying students, were adequately searched, because we anticipated that some students may possibly foment and lead to difficulty.
"It was unfortunate that in the course of this, right after the election had been concluded successfully, winners and losers known, some miscreants, in the name of students, took laws into their hands.
"Some of them have been involved in heinous acts such as armed robbery, cult activities, unlawful possession of weapons. Following that, we produced these arrests," Mr. Amba stated.

Re: Letter To My Nation At 57 >> Naija Breaking News > 30/01/2018
By Edmund E. E. Obikwere
Your "letter to my country" was a amazing article. Our history will show that the renowned Bishop Ajayi Crowther was 12 when he "was captured, with his mother, toddler brother and other family members, along with his complete village, by Fulani Muslim slave raiders in 1821." And this phenomenon still persists to date. Considering that the amalgamation of Nigeria in 1914, it is estimated that up to 30 million Igbo lives have been lost via religious riots, the 1967 pogrom in the North and the Nigeria/Biafra war of 1967-1970. Mainly because in January 1966, one particular Kaduna-born Important Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu, along with other army officers, carried out a military coup that toppled the civilian government of Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, the northern army officers, in a reprisal coup, killed majority of Igbo military officers, including the Head of State, Aguiyi Ironsi, along with hundreds of thousands of Igbo individuals in the North. The Igbo, as a individuals, were in no way privy to the actions of their officers in the Nigerian army just as they have not mandated the IPOB to seek for Biafra. To stave off additional massacre of the Igbo, the individuals advised Ojukwu to insist on the accord reached at Aburi, Ghana, that the regions stay apart for some time to enable tempers to cool. Realising that the Eastern Area was unarmed, the Federal Military government declared war on the individuals who had adopted the name Biafra to allow them seek international intervention for peace. Nigeria pushed out the Igbo and in the procedure individuals numbering up to 5 million have been killed and the whole Igboland destroyed just before the finish of the brutal war. The most sordid was the Asaba genocide of October 7, 1967 carried out by the 2nd Division of the Nigerian Army on civilians. In January 1970, at the end of the war, 1 would hear the start out of hate song in Nigeria. The Nigerian soldiers sang during early morning road walk exercise, hence: "Nyamiri, ya mutu ya kari" which means, "the Igbo have been entirely decimated." It was believed Nigeria would put the civil war behind her, but in 1975, a military coup toppled Gen. Gowon’s government to stop him from handing more than to civilians. Eventually in 1979, a civilian government was set up to start rebuilding Nigeria on the component of peaceful co-existence. And Nigeria was re-integrating properly till the December 1983 military coup removed Alhaji Shehu Shagari since he had permitted the Igbo the freedom to participate in governance as cost-free citizens. The period of 1984 to 1985 was the time of retro-active laws to criminalise non-criminal actions, so as to shoot the targeted victims to death. Some Igbo youths returning to their nation from overseas were shot for allegedly carrying foreign currencies, a hitherto non-criminal offence. This way Igbo have been getting killed till the removal of Buhari/Idiagbon military regime. The long period of military rule up to 1999 produced Nigerians shed track of democratic practices, and everything became the army way, exactly where the leadership is above the law. In this philosophy of the "king can do no wrong," Basic Buhari won the presidential election in 2015, an election, if he had lost, would have ushered in the flow of blood in the streets. This situation of quelling agitations by force of arms is no longer contemporary. Would the president unite the dead Igbo into his Nigeria? Nigerian history is filled with blood, as if bloodletting is the only way to unity. This pursuit of one race Nigeria is incorrect. Boko Haram was killing Christians, on 1 side the armed "soldier" herdsmen are killing and dispossessing southerners of their land, whilst the military are also killing unarmed individuals in South eastern states. Mainly because the president is not performing something to stop these atrocities, individuals assume he approved the actions. Continuous killing of other tribesmen, as is carried out in Nigeria, is what is named ethnic cleansing. A leader ought to listen to the individuals and should rule according to law, as an alternative of using the army to enforce his individual pondering. Nigerians are saying that the 1999 constitution was the handwork of one man, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, which he tilted, in favour of the North and which he had produced challenging to amend unless the North agrees. The contradictions brought on by inserting the Shariah court program in the constitution and however asserting that Nigeria is a Secular state, is incomprehensible. Shariah courts market Islam. This is the purpose for the Boko Haram insurgency and the Zak-Zakky and other Islamic sectarian uprisings. The present position of the Federal Government of employing the army to kill and intimidate agitators is untenable. Like of country, as patriotism, stems from safety of life and home for all citizens simply because suppression does not market patriotism. Only demagogues will adore the empty space known as Nigeria whereas actual patriots love the diverse individuals of the land. If the military is actually defending the integrity of Nigeria why are the armed Fulani herdsmen from other West African countries allowed to roam this country killing non-Fulanis in their homesteads? The integrity of Nigeria should really be its diverse individuals and culture. It is time to quit this idea of One particular RACE NIGERIA/1 FAITH NIGERIA pursuit in this our pluralistic society. Gen. Buhari confessed that he is a dictator and even thought of asking for emergency powers. We may possibly thank him for efforts to recover looted funds but to stay clear of senseless wasting of human lives he should really not be provided a second term. He has no role in a democracy. Let us revert to the 1963 Nigerian Constitution, dropping also the present Nigerian anthem that sings the ADORATION of the military regime. Our soldiers in the previous destroyed Nigeria and caused all our problems in their lust for political powers. Our genuine heroes are our fathers that brought us independence without having shedding blood and we must be grateful to Britain for their magnanimity in giving us the freedom though our personal compatriots now use majority force for oppression. This Boko Haram war is the only patriotic sacrificial undertaking by the army, as they did not lead to it themselves. The old National Anthem makes Nigerians truly recognize and accommodate 1 one more. Dialogue is peace and that is the only suitable track.

How Not To Be A Gentleman And Other (un)social Etiquettes! > Latest Naija News * 30/01/2018
The finer print of that law says that abusers are liable to be known as Common Thieves.
I have a lot of observations on the male race in Nigeria, largely because I am not a member. My most profound discovery about them is that almost every member of that group does not have a single notion what it indicates to be a gentleman. Just verify out the visitors. Quite a few males, even guys-in-black, can be seen struggling for the appropriate-of-way with just about every other road user, lady or ruffian. I have searched in vain for those I can contact knights-in-shinny-armour to redeem the race. All I see about me are guys in burnished armour. Nearly all of them seem to be versed in the veritable art of how not to be a gentleman. You are offended? Wait then till I ask you this: how a lot of of our men, not counting your fashionistas, know how to sew a button on their most beloved shirt? Most Nigerian guys cannot inform one particular end of the needle from the other. But, the book of etiquette says ‘a gentleman knows how to sew on a button’.
For that matter, how a lot of of our men know that a gentleman ought to constantly stroll behind a lady, except of course when there is danger? There you are, none of you! Most men have no concept that they are supposed to walk in such a way that they shield their lady from all dangers, oncoming or from behind. Alas, your Nigerian men seem to will need the shelter that females provide that is why they make ladies stroll behind them. But once more, the book says a gentleman generally walks behind a lady.
There is a rule in the book of social etiquettes that says guys ought often to give their lady close friends flowers to mark a assortment of occasions: Christmas, birthday, baby bearing, apologies, weekend get-away, valentine, request-to-be-mine, apologies, valentine… Now, all these guys who gave their ladies flowers this last valentine must please stand up. That’s what I thought: two males out of one particular hundred and one thing million (or whatever you believe the population of the country is). Haba! Did you say anything about giving flowers not becoming in our culture? Mmm! I normally wondered why the Almighty triggered the silly issues to grow about here, seeing they are definitely not component of the culture of Nigerians. You know the way one particular would hold a baby’s heavily soiled nappy when it is full of the stuff? That’s how a Nigerian male holds flowers when he is giving them to a lady. He thinks it’s much more than his reputation can withstand to be seen undertaking that. The only time I received a flower in my residence was the year I produced a lot of noise about it. Considering that then, there has been a flowery silence.
From this book of social etiquettes for men, I also see that gentlemen are not anticipated to leave dirty crockery about. Ha! That is the one I love most. I wait for the day when Nigerian gentlemen will finish their dinner and promptly see that there is no dirty crockery lying around, not just by instructing the small ones to deal with it but by rolling up their sleeves and plunging their hands into the soapsuds. In the meantime, we ought to continue to watch as Baba Wande finishes his dinner and slides off the table end of the conversation, in individual, specifically when he ignores the thin voice of the lady wailing about ‘who will wash these plates’. Nicely, sometimes, the cuckoo waltzes property and daddy decides of his own freewill to clean up. Such days are rarer than discovering ruby on the beach that is why there normally is a song and dance about it when it takes place. Even the neighbourhood knows there is something distinct in the air mainly because the voice of the turtle is heard clearly in the land.
As soon as, I came upon a lady who, unprompted, swiftly explained that the father of the home was cooking dinner that evening. I never ever asked her. I rather think that she needed to explain why she was in the sitting area that dinner preparation hour, rather than in the kitchen. I have not been capable to make a decision irrespective of whether that was occasioned by guilt or a need to have to fill the time, that she had generally used for pottering around the kitchen, with words.
By far the most profound of the How to be a gentleman’s guidelines is that gentlemen are expected to laugh and speak quietly. Essentially, I consider that is exactly where we all fail, each guys and ladies. This abuse of noise is anything that is really Nigerian. From waking time to sleeping time in this country, there is no abating the noises buzzing and belching out of each and every religion-linked loudspeaker, record dealer, passenger canvasser, beer parlour adherent, irate husbands, termagants, and all else. To a man (and lady), Nigerians are just mindless noisemakers. One particular day, we actually ought to speak about why we have not all grow to be The Walking Deaf in this nation.
Most importantly, my book revealed that true gentlemen do not abuse expense accounts even though on company trips. This is the fine print of a bigger law that says gentlemen do not abuse the accounts of their offices or the other privileges of those offices. The finer print of that law says that abusers are liable to be named Popular Thieves. I do not believe this rule was written with Nigerians in mind exactly. If it was, then it has fallen flat on its face. Practically every facet of Nigerian life is peopled with men who do not only abuse their expense accounts, they in fact insult them. That specifically is the bane of public life in this nation: the truth that Nigerians do not definitely know the meaning of the epithet Common Thief. Actually, getting known as popular is an abuse that true gentlemen dread for it implicates plainly that one particular has no sense of refinement, is a black soul, or that 1 is worth significantly less than the grass he walks on.
Sadly for us all, Nigeria is not a class-minded society. Maybe, when upon a time in its history, it applied to be. At that time, there were behavioural expectations for just about every segment of the tribe. What qualified one particular for membership within that segment was no more than conformity to the rules. Aberrations had been not only frowned at, they qualified one particular for exclusion from the segment. That was class behaviour. It did not depend on money it depended on a particular mental tuning and keying in to a certain degree expected of 1.
Now, the diffusion that came via the modern day life-style has restructured the society to the Haves and the Have-nots. The Haves are these who can rub two kobo together, say the magic words and bring out millions of Naira, while the Have-nots are these who do not know the magic words. Regrettably, either by coincidence or luck, the magic words are recognized only to the nation’s leaders, the Haves who use them to abuse expense accounts, insult charge accounts, assault subventions, batter budgetary allocations and clubber the nation. Now, these are the widespread thieves who can not be named gentlemen. Does it then follow that the Have-nots are gentlemen? I honestly don’t know do you?
By the above accounts, therefore, a gentleman is an individual who seeks to sustain class behaviour that hinges on duty. To say that Nigeria demands gentlemen in its public offices (and private ones too) is an understatement. Responsibility enables one particular to pick that action which can be called the issue to do, you know, the gentlemanly point. That is what tends to make a society thriving, when it can count on its public citizens to be real gentlemen.
