We need to lay more blame for "Kids don't know how computers work" at the feet of the people responsible: Google.
Google set out about a decade ago to push their (relatively unpopular) chromebooks by supplying them below-cost to schools for students, explicitly marketing them as being easy to restrict to certain activities, and in the offing, kids have now grown up in walled gardens, on glorified tablets that are designed to monetize and restrict every movement to maximize profit for one of the biggest companies in the world.
Tech literacy didn't mysteriously vanish, it was fucking murdered for profit.
#I'm genuinely confused by ur comment#chromeOS IS linux#and you could reset a linux machine to a predefined state ?#granted installing non-chromeos operating systems on a chromebook is more involved than on other computers#there's the like write protect screw so you have to actually open the computer up#and I had to flash custom firmware onto it#and I'm not using a real desktop environment / window manager so I'm kinda cheating#but its been running arch just fine

Arch is a distro thats infamous for being hard to install. its a pretty minimal and by default it doesn't come packaged with a desktop environment. The installer just throws you right into a zsh prompt and makes you do everything yourself. The process actually isn’t that hard if you have a decent knowledge of bash/unix cli but a lot of things can go wrong and it took me a while to even get the basic system installed for the first time. The amount of choice you get makes it a good distro if you want to have more control over your system
[image description: a screenshot of a computer with 3 windows open. a terminal takes up half the screen and is displaying the results of the neofetch command, that being a large ascii art of the arch logo and the system information of the computer. The other half of the screen is taken up by a firefox window showing google search results for “among us” and a trans pride flag being displayed in a terminal. end id] (i use arch btw)
#i mean its arch#if ur trying to actual use it you probably know what ur getting into#this shit took me way to long#prob had like 10 failed installs and my first successful install was missing a package that i needed to actualy use internet lol

peppermint os is pretty nice ngl. its debian based, lightweight, and uses xfce for the desktop environment. its really simple to install and it seems to be a good distro to put on older, less powerful computers.
[image description: A screenshot of a computer desktop with a terminal window open in the middle. The terminal is displaying the results of the neofetch command and features a large, assci peppermint candy next to system information. The desktop background is of the among us logo.]
#my programming teacher relly likes peppermint so i wanted to try it out#that image description isnt like great but i dont really want to transcribe the entire neofetch command#might just make a simpler neofetch config that isnt as hard to transcribe lol

phone discourse makes me irrationally mad

Android isn’t a phone company, its an operating system. Additionally android is open source, meaning that literately anyone could download and modify the source code if they wanted to.
This is a good time to remind everyone to swap from Apple to Android the next time they have the means and need to get a new phone
Android phones are almost universally...
Cheaper
More durable
More customizable
Faster & more reliable
Less likely to remove perfectly workable features just because they are "old"
Better for pirating media
Y'all have got to stop enabling Apple's insistence on being a fashion brand rather than providing electronics that respect your autonomy and decision making powers.
Next time you have a choice in the matter, go Android. One minute of being able to actually browse your file architecture without jumping through proprietary bullshit and you'll be hooked, I promise.
#android in and of itself is not bad but phone manufacturers and google (who has a lot of influence over android) are#tho there ARE versions of android with no google in them (degoogled)

so on the keysmash generator site there's a checkbox for “color” that switches the stylesheet using javascript
I like the way that this works and want to implement something similar on my main site (https://horsescary.com/) but it has 2 problems
1) The choices made wont persist over multiple pages of the website
2) The choices wont save when you reload the site
I thought of a kindof janky solution for the first problem but not the second. The site would still switch out a stylesheet, but instead of having more than one page, it would just swap out the HTML with javascript. This would probably work but im not sure if its actually a good idea.
The probably better solution would be to use cookies but idrk who those work and like what i need to disclose and stuff.
#also the way that the keysmash generator button works is kinda scuffed#cause i put ALL of the css in both stylesheets#when it would have been better to have the site use 2 stylesheets#one for color and one for the acutal structure of the site
