Exploring the Challenges of Mental Health in Teens
Manuela Friedheim
Remember when your toys, childhood nicknames, incredible costumes, and fairy tales were left behind? At that time, you were becoming a teenager, which is challenging. Teenagers face many changes at school, in their family relations, opinions, friendships, and many other things. During this period, their mood worsens; they begin to be responsible for their actions and develop different kinds of responsibility. Furthermore, they are discovering themselves, who they are, and who they want to be. Due to that, mental issues have become common in this period of life.
Several mental issues emerge during this phase. The most common ones are anxiety, attention deficit, depression, eating disorders, and post-traumatic disorders. These issues are developed for many reasons, as we can see with eating disorders that can manifest themselves in the form of anorexia or image distortion, which could be a consequence of the constant comparison among people influenced by social media.
According to the Mental Health Foundation, 20% of teenagers may go through a psychological problem at some point. It is also claimed that 50% of mental health problems are established by the age of 14 and 75% by the age of 24.
Several situations to which teens can be exposed can cause mental issues. Parents' conflicts, for example, can make the adolescent feel lost because of the lack of stability at home. Another example is the competition in academics and social and athletic performances, which has been stimulated by social media and inside the schools. Loads of time, bullying, and breakups are reasons for those issues, too.
One important factor is how teens handle these problems. Many times, they don't have their parents or responsible support. They resort to drugs and alcohol or abandon essential things, like school, to escape their problems. Untreated mental health issues can also lead to attempts of self-harm and suicide. Those issues impact teens' lives, but they can be handled differently. Some teens look for help and start with medication and therapy.
In conclusion, these issues directly affect teenagers’ lives because this is a moment of change in many spheres of life. Good mental health is essential for a great life, and it determines how people think, feel, and act. It also influences the way we handle stress and make decisions. For this reason, all people, and especially teens, have to be attentive to their well-being. In light of all that, always pay attention to the people you care about because they may be suffering from some of those issues and need your support.
