This summer I will ride a bicycle from Houghton, MI to Chicago, IL and back, on a route that covers over 900 miles by road, trail, and everything in between.

Why would I, or anyone, do this?

The 2024 election was the latest in a rise of right-wing populism, enabled by the rhetorical targeting of many institutions that uphold perceived “liberal” or “progressive” values. They are reduced to political footballs, exploited to mobilize and an aggrieved constituency for political gain.

But who are the people who make these institutions “go”, in reality? What are their stories? And how can their experiences help other institutions who find themselves in the crosshairs navigate the upcoming years?

On my route, I will gather their stories. Stories of librarians navigating book bans. Stories of women’s reproductive health providers navigating the policy and physical threats they face. Stories of DEI officers witnessing the backlash against their work against embedded injustice. Stories of environmental stewards.

Stories can bring us if we can find common ground in a shared fight.

This will be my first book project, layering these accounts alongside the account of the journey I will make.

Oh, and it’s also for several good causes.
