" 𝐬𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐧'𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐭 ; 𝐢𝐭 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐦𝐞 – "
the redhead's shoulders dropped under the sheer weight of knowing that what the avengers had done wasn't enough . thanos still snapped his cursed fingers and took half of the world's population — including her beloved yelena — with him . she set her jaw and stared down at the floor as she fought to stifle the tears that threatened to spill down her cheeks . not tears of somber , but tears of righteous anger at herself .
Tumblr media
the black widow had been unable to maintain any sort of eye contact with the iron maiden whatsoever . how could she ? she blamed herself for the loss of her sister , how does one look the mother of the bereaved in the eye after having condemned them ?
did melina blame the avengers ? perhaps a quick glance at the woman's face would reveal the answer she sought but nat couldn't bring herself to face the inevitable anger or grief that would meet said efforts of chancing a look .
the silence was deafening .
the tip of natasha's tongue darted out to wet her chapped lips before she finally spoke , a whisper so hoarse that it betrayed all of her current inner turmoil :
" it should have been me . "
Melina groaned and dragged her hands down her face.
She watched Natasha carefully. Wishing she knew how to help.
“It should have been nobody.” She replied.
Her heart ached. Her little one. Gone… just.
But surely she couldn’t be gone fully. Logically she had to be somewhere else.
Or she was dead. But they hadn’t exhausted the probabilities yet. She couldn’t afford to think like that.
She looked over at Natasha again. Melina had always been terrible with comfort.
“It’s not your fault. We can still avenge her. Isn’t that what your little group was all about?” She replied.
“There has to be a way out of this. And we will find it. We must.”
The silence was always present. A reminder that half of the people in what would usually be a busy building were gone.
Melina looked out at the landscape.
“Do you know how many lives I have taken indirectly? Hmm? At least you tried to be a good guy. If anyone here deserves this…”
her voice catches. Then her eyes harden.
“Natasha I abandoned you before. I don’t intend to do that again. The pain… it only makes us stronger.” She smiles ruefully.

“A hero.” She blinks back tears. Then smiles widely. “Perhaps I overshot the timing? Or undershot looking at your clothing…”
Jubilee was on a peaceful walk that day, just wanting some time for herself.
Little did she expect to feel a rush of wind and see a flash of light to reveal a women who seemed less then thrilled.
Melina swore in Russian as the portal closed behind her.
Her eyes locked on the girl she had landed near.
“Hello.”

“Science. I created a portal. It didn’t take me where I wanted it to I don’t think.” She sighs. “Tell me Jubilee have you ever heard of the black widow?”

“Good guess, what gave it away?” Melina replies sardonically.
“Where exactly is here anyway?” She sighs standing and dusting herself off.

“So where to next handsome?~” she replied mockingly.
She smirked up at him quirking a brow.
" look. it's one mission. once we've got what we need, we never have to see each other again. " [from Alexei]
“Sounds good to me. Don’t get too friendly. Guardian.” Melina warns, crossing her arms over her chest.

Mel watched as the guards opened up the double doors for them.
She picked nervously at her nail beds.
Soon the guards said something about getting the girls.
As soon as they left Melina with Alexi she stepped away a bit. Intimidated by him.
“I’m lucky… I’ve always wanted kids.” She says quietly.
This was the worst mission Melina had ever had to complete.
Children. One the age of three years old. And a complete stranger of a man. Who she would meet in a few moments.
They would let her meet her new husband first before the children. This was going to be the hardest thing she would ever have to do.
The guards marched her into the room where her eyes immediately caught on the tallest man in the room.
“The Red Guardian i presume?” She asked.

The normally stone faced assassin cracked a small smile.
“Oh don’t worry my dear, that won’t be a problem.”
Her dark eyes glittered with restrained laughter.

“Hmm.” She replies simply. Looking him over.
“I am Melina Vostokov.” She extends her hand to shake his.
“I assume you have been briefed?”
Melina was a bit put out that they would give the more active part of the mission to this man. She wished she could infiltrate Shield herself. But. A cover was needed and not many women worked in that field.
“Have you met our ‘daughters’ yet?” She asks.
