Most fans seem intrigued to finally see the character on screen, especially after Infinity War hinted that she might be the most important, and powerful, member of the Avengers thus far. But a common complaint keeps popping up on social media – why does Brie Larson, talented actress, look so bored?
This could be, and has been, racked up to mere sexism, but I don’t think that’s the full story. The whole “Cheer up, love” stereotype didn’t apply to Black Widow, or Scarlet Witch; both of those two are pretty serious characters with tragic backgrounds, yet fans aren’t bothered by their somber attitudes.
It’s because Brie Larson does indeed look bored; the colorful costume and deeply unimpressed facial expression make an amusing combination. But what the moaners don’t seem to understand is that this is obviously intentional; her character isn’t a young, zippy teenager suddenly gifted with superpowers, she’s a jaded intergalactic warrior, an amnesiac one, at that.
While the typical superhero origin story follows an average person on their journey into becoming a demigod, bestowed with great power and great responsibility, Captain Marvel seems to be intentionally reversing that model.
Carol Danvers initially believes she is a Kree, born and raised, and describes the alien race to Nick Fury as not simply the good guys, but a race composed entirely of heroes. She’s an unabashed Kree supremacist, proudly waxing on about the inherent superiority of Kree civilization, and how political correctness is causing it to collapse.
Or rather, the evil Skrulls are. This being a modern-day superhero story, Carol is likely going to see both sides of the equation before she goes Super Saiyan and ends the war. But she’s also being plagued with her old human memories, long buried after the Kree mysteriously altered her into a superhuman.
No doubt, there will be a surprise or two regarding her origins that the trailer can’t give away. But what we’ve seen so far indicates that this is a story about a superhuman becoming human, rather than the other way around.
And a superhuman as ridiculously overpowered as Captain Marvel, who looks as though she can take on the entire roster of the Avengers without even changing her facial expression, is bound to be bored by the scale of her own abilities – the world is deeply unimpressive to a woman who can move entire planets.
This is not Brie Larson, Oscar-winning actress, phoning in a high-profile performance. This is Larson playing an emotionally detached character who has to rediscover her humanity in order to become a hero, rather than a superweapon mindlessly fighting on behalf of the Kree.
And that is a really interesting concept for a superhero origin story, which tend to stick to the same tropes that were established more than a decade ago.
So, if you think Brie Larson looks bored – you’re right. That’s the point.
