The Other Side
I chose the name "The Other Side" for my final project as I wanted to show the hidden emotions people would rather not show in front of other people. Everybody has a face that they like people to see, but they have another hidden side that nobody knows of. People bring out emotions in different ways and my project aims to show the hidden side of each person I photographed. I chose this project because I realized that not all people are aware of "the other side" a person may have. A person smiling isn't always happy; some people would rather not show the dark side. I was inspired by a couple of photos by Laura Hospes and Jason Grim while I was researching for my topic, and I was able to get some ideas while going through both their projects, "The Death Epilogue II" and "The Other Half".
Taking photos of people's faces was a bit challenging as Dr. Ronnie made me realize that not all people can fake cry and look real. So I decided not to show faces, which to me was also challenging as I was not able to show any emotions without showing faces at first, but because of the research I came up with different ideas without having to show faces.
All in all, I really enjoyed capturing different people in different places, and placing them depending on the lighting and editing the photos to give each photo more meaning. I really had fun while creating this project and it really taught me a lot.

Pop The Bubble Reflection Pop the Bubble had some amazing pictures I was really inspired by, as I loved the fact that the photos I was looking at were captured by students who are my age and are in the same major i'm in, which really gave me motivation. Maryam Elbayady's work really inspired me. As I looked at each picture closely, I realized all the details which made each picture have a meaning, which I think is really hard to do. I felt like her idea was different. It was an idea hardly anybody can think of. And the colors of each picture show how deep they are which was also something I liked about them.

For Assignment 5, I decided to copy the image captured by Shirin Neshat during her earliest works in the series Women of Allah. I really liked Neshat’s idea as she had a purpose behind Images she captured. She was born in Iran, and moved to the United States in 1974 to continue her education, and was stuck there as the Islamic revolution prevented her from returning to her home country for almost twenty years. During both series, Unveiling and Women of Allah created by Neshat, she explores notions of femininity in relation to Islamic fundamentalism and militancy in her home country. Throughout Neshat’s photos, I realized that the themes she used were religion, violence, madness, and gender. Collaboration played an important role throughout Neshat’s series, which was something I really admired in all pictures as it was different. I chose this picture because of all the little details that made up the picture. The look on the subject’s eyes, the makeup on her face and the fact that she covers her face with her hands covered in henna.. The picture really caught my eye because as I starred at the picture for almost five minutes trying to understand everything about it, and that's what I loved about it. Ps. My mum smudged the makeup on her right eye.. that's why its really dark.

Birgit Püve is an is an Estonian photographer who created a book project and called it "Double Matters". Her aim was to explore the meaning of similarity and identity in a world that celebrates uniqueness. She captured pictures of twins and triplets which challenged the viewer to analyze the relationship between the subject's as their personalities differed greatly while they looked very similar. "During photographing twin culture in Estonia I soon found that the meaning of similarity has changed. Many of the growing number of twins - instead of trying to differ - want to be similar: to be different of us all." Said Birgit.

Research Work About Other Street Photographers. This photo was taken by Constantin Mashinskiy, the designer and photographer, during his series "365 Parisians". During the series, Mashinskiy went around Paris for 365 days, documenting Parisians through street portraits. I went through the photos he captured during the series, all of them were amazing. Each picture showed a completely different personality with a different sense of style. He took so many different portraits throughout the series, and each one of the photos was expressed in a different way. I chose the picture above because I felt like the boy's face was extremely expressive. His tattoos, piercings, and his facial expression gave the picture a thousand words. All the little details in the picture really had a meaning, including the fact that the picture is black and white. I felt like Mashinskiy meant to make the picture black and white because it showed more meaning and emotion when looked at. I personally thought Mashinskiy's street photography was really inspiring, as every single photo I looked at had a meaning and made me realize how every single little detail in a photo may make a huge difference.

Research Work Assignment #3
Family Portraits Research
This picture was taken by Dorothea Lange. She was a documentary photographer and an American Photojournalist. Lange used to document the depression era and also used to photograph victims of the Great Depression. As I went through Lange’s photos during the Depression, I found that almost all photos showed the faces and emotions of so many affected by this era which was surprising to me, as she was able to make every single photo look so natural to the point where I sometimes tried to guess what the subject’s were thinking about just by looking at their eyes. I chose this picture to talk about, because to me it says a thousand words. The emotions and their face in the picture really affected me. Its like I really felt the hard times they were going through just from the look on their faces. Lange was able to show how exhausted the family was by showing all the details in the background. The picture is so natural to the extent that it shows almost everything you need to know about the life this family lived.. the clothes, the house, them being barefoot, etc… Although this picture was taken during the 1930’s, back when camera’s weren’t the best and photos weren’t seen right away, but this family photo really is one of the most expressive pictures I’ve seen so far.
