Okay, I know it is implied that Jess and Rory will eventually get together but, in my head, since Rory is not a 16 year old, I envision that their journey to one another would take a significantly shorter time than the Luke/Lorelai relationship did. I kind of figure that motherhood and writing her novel would give Rory the perspective in her life that she so desperately needs.
That being said, I keep coming up with scenarios of Rory’s “aha!” moment and I want it to the be the simplest “I love him” moment imaginable. For example:
It is when Rory, Jess, Lorelai and Luke are in the kitchen and Jess makes the stupidest joke imaginable (at Luke’s expense, of course), making Lorelai and Jess laugh hysterically. It is seeing Jess and Lorelai falling over themselves laughing that gives her the ‘I love this dork’ moment.
It is when Rory comes home to a cupboard full of pop tarts (a variety of flavours, of course) and a note from Jess telling her to pace herself because he bought all of the pop tarts in Doose’s and it might take them a while to stock up.
It is when Jess leaves notes in the margins of her manuscript, particularly the ones clarifying their moments together, such as, “You still owe me that eggroll, by the way.”
It is when Lorelai comments about how often Jess has been around and Rory’s immediate thought is, “I hope he doesn’t leave.”
It is when she sees him holding her son/daughter (I really hope it’s a son…) for the first time and the moment is just…perfect. The sun through the window is hitting them just right, and the new little Gilmore has loosely grasped Jess’ thumb and he’s looking at the baby with such awe.
It is when an entire day of moving Rory’s millions of books to her new home in Queens has passed and she walks in to see Jess has promptly passed out on her couch, towers of books and boxes surrounding him. He looks exhausted and his limbs are all askew (that is totally going to hurt when he wakes up), but she doesn’t have the heart to wake him up so she digs a blanket out of a box and lays it on top of him.
It is when she gets the call that her book is going to be published and the first person she calls isn’t Lorelai, but Jess. The guy who always believed in her even when she was at her worst. The guy that was always there for her throughout her pregnancy. The guy who gave her clarity just by being there. The guy who told her when she wasn’t being herself (he was the catalyst for her going back to Yale and reuniting with her mom after all) and gave her advice when she was lost. The guy who gave her the idea of writing this book - she couldn’t have done it without him.
There are so many scenarios and I just want all of them. I want to see it, not just imagine it. And that is where the revival let me down. It is why we need a season two. Because an implication of a future relationship isn’t good enough for me…not after eight years of waiting.
