I'd been wanting to make a Maki and Mai collage for a long while but I wasn't sure about it because it's full of spoilers for anime onlys (which is majority of the people who go to cons and like jjk). I ended up starting it tho.

The Taste of Freedom

Part 1

Maki Zenin will always remember her first taste of cheap convenience store ramen. It wasn’t even a limited edition flavor, just chicken, no extra seasonings, no garnish. Plain old chicken-flavored instant ramen. But it was the best thing she had ever tasted in her seven (almost eight) years of life. Maybe that's why she loves junk food so much; she is constantly searching for that taste, that comfort, that feeling of a hot bowl of ramen on a freezing winter day.

Noaya had beaten her up again. The bruises on her ribs were so severe that she had difficulty breathing. Mai had to drag her back into the house; she was crying more than Maki and in a far less injured state than Maki. It was October and still warm, but the last of the cicadas had long since died. Maki felt like dying, but if she died who would look out for Mai? Certainly not her father, nor her mother.

Mother did not help clean and bandage Maki’s wounds. Mai did that, and very clumsily due to all her crying and pleading for Maki not to die.

No.

Maki would not die tonight.

She lay in her room for weeks propped on her and Mai’s pillow (she couldn't breathe lying flat), scarcely able to eat. Mai brought her meals and painstakingly fed her small bites since she could not open her mouth very wide. Mai had to help her to the toilet, and then again to bathe her. When she was well enough to move on her own, Maki decided that she and Mai had to leave. There was no place in the Zenin household for twins. Even the position of housemaid was seen as too high for the likes of them. So, Maki began to look for weak spots in the walls around the estate. She finally found a gap in the far south wall. The hole itself was too small for her to fit through, but the stones around it were loose. With a little prying, (and at the expense of her fingers) she was able to widen the hole so it could fit her.

None of the adults noticed that her fingers were red.

It was December when Maki and Mai left. They left late in the night, when the house was asleep; when the guards were drowsy and careless. It was cold, but they could not risk being heard so they had to do without their shoes. They could not be encumbered with luggage, so they packed only enough food for one day. It would be fine. Over the past month, Maki had been taking small (valuable) ornaments from the rooms she cleaned. They would need currency for food, shoes, new clothes (Maki doubted the rest of Japan still wore kimonos), and most importantly tickets so they could go far, far away from this godforsaken place.

Carefully, she led a sleep-addled Mai through the halls.

There was a light on.

There were voices.

Quickly, out to the garden.

Now south.

By the koi pond (slowly, quietly)

Across the bridge (never mind the curse).

Into the trees.

Now run.

Run.

Run.

Run and run and run and run and run (there are more lanterns than usual) run and run and run and run (was that a voice?) run and run and run and run and run (don’t stop, we’ll rest later).

Run.

There was the wall.

There was the hole.

But there was also a light.

Maki dragged Mai into a bush to hide.

It was Mother.

With a growl, Maki pushes herself up after a moment too long and growls, “What is your problem, idiot?!” Mai can hardly look at her sister, ashamed of the small part of her that already misses the comfort Maki’s body brought. “Was the event not enough for you? Fuck, just stop being a–!”  Finally, Mai looks at her sister just in time for Maki to stop the next few words slipping from her lips. It feels like it’s gone too far over nothing, falling into the trap she was trying to avoid, fueled by the lingering pain in her joints and the suffocation of her sister.  “What?” Mai is quick to snap back, her anger boiling over as she leans forward in her seat. “A fucking princess? A spoiled brat because mom loved me more than you?”  A lie. But Maki will never acknowledge that.

Hey um. Honest question. I've never seen it, are the JJK sisters kind of gay or <3

OH I'm so glad you asked this. i'm just going to organise my answer under a cut:

(cn: mentions of incest)

short answer: kind of! yes. ish.

long answer: they have an Extremely Intense and double-edged relationship that is likely intended to be platonic but also... has Doomed and Fated and indirect romantic undertones because of how non-platonic it... seems... even as the canon tries to deadpan-ly assert that it is in fact just a familial relationship. or, tldr: they have a relationship that's so intense it toes the lines of ambiguity, plus there's a good bit of subtext. mai also does kiss maki on screen. so there's that.

I mean, there's plausible deniability, but the vibes are there, so much so that there's a sizeable contingent of people who like mai/maki if you look at ao3. separately maki herself is, I think, the fandom lesbian icon and mai has been said by gege to be a "womaniser" and someone who makes people think she and other women are dating any time she hangs out with them. so there's a lot of mileage in shipping them with any women in general!
