LASER CUTTING PLANNING
In order for the laser cutter to read the images correctly I had to program them into Adobe Illustrator and test out various filters to find which one gave the best effect for laser cutting.
I initially wanted to see if i could put more of a sketch filter onto it to try and retain some of the detail in the hand. However, this didn’t work very well and was too many lines for the laser cutter to etch after being advised by Nick. He then told me to use the ‘3 layers’ filter to turn the images into 3 block colours so that we would at least be able to differentiate between light and dark on the hand.
Although this wasn’t necessarily what i wanted in terms of final look, I appreciate that there are only certain colours that the laser cutter can read and understand. I am so excited to see how this will turn out on once it’s been engraved on the laser cutter!

SHOW IDEAS
In my show I want to show the layers of existence by using the laser cutter to etch my shoot outcomes onto coloured and see-through perspex/acrylic and layer them one in front of the other. This means that when you walk around the installation the images will almost be moving as you see them layered in front of one another from a different angle. I am not sure yet if I want to use something like Andre Elliot’s work with the hands or use portraits like the ones I did in my last experimental shoot to layer. I have also thought about using lighting and how this might shine through the coloured perpex to create a reflection of the etched photos.

DEVELOPMENTAL RESEARCH PRESENTATION- SHOW IDEAS
I did a lot of research on a dystopian world where the ’negative’ elements of the society we live in are magnified into the worst possible scenario. I came across something called techno-dystopia which is a world in which technology has taken over. However, instead of focusing on what the technological advances would actually be, I wanted to focus of what we would be like in such a world and how our existence would be effected.
As a result of this research I started to focus on colour in terms of shoots and how this can visually portray something or even aid in commenting on our existence by making the photos more visually interesting and eye-catching.
I came across a photographer called Andre Elliott. He has inspired my work to talk about how we exist through our aspirations and desires. I will potentially do something similar to his work in my FMP to show how as a society we are always looking for new obsession, whether that be the latest trends or a viral video, new apps or the newest iPhone. Although nowadays as a society we are evidently transfixed by technology, it has been like that from the beginning of human existence in a roundabout way with any new technological advances that occur. When the first phone was invented it wasn’t enough for society so they moved onto computers and the internet and so on and so forth. People always look and crave for something more and these images show how we are relatively fickle as we are always looking for something new to be ’obsessed’ with.

COLLABORATIVE SHOOT- GEL FILTERS
Hey!
As we were both looking at using gel filters, Ella and I decided we would do a collaborative shoot. However, within the shoot I was mainly looking at the way the light bounced off the model and was also taking pictures that I knew I could layer up on photoshop. I was also looking at taking pictures of the model’s hand in different positions to possibly develop into an idea later on in the project.
Ella was looking more a putting big sheets of acetate over the model and using the lighting to reflect off that. Although the images look similar due to the same lighting, our outcomes were very different!

Hey!
In terms of planning for my next shoot, I’ve been looking at the photographer Geoffrey Jones and his work with gel lights and filters. I really like the visual that this portrays and the different dimensions created using colour and lighting. I think the most interesting part of his images is the way the light bounces off different parts of the model’s face and highlights her bone structure. The colours that he used (pinks blues and yellows) look very futuristic which is something that i would like to achieve in my work to show the ‘hypothetical existence’ part of my project and a future techno-dystopian world. I think the use of colour in my shoots would also represent technology and colour as a digital format not a natural element.

ARTIST RESEARCH
Craig McDean’s work has really inspired me both in terms of colour and theory from it’s visual effect on the viewer. The coloured acetate is layered over the model almost as a way of distorting her face and adding another dimension of colour that is physical and isn’t created through digital manipulation or lighting effects. I like this idea as it explains my work in an abstract and discreet way in the fact that the layers of acetate can represent the layers of a person that can be created through social media. It shows how we exist in multiple layers and multiple dimensions and how we can distort or conceal our true selves through trying to create someone else that fits into society’s ideals.

WHAT NEXT?
Further Development for Research:
Hypothetical existence- Utopia/Dystopia- Looking at a world that a lot of people fear our society could develop into- consumed and transfixed by technology to the point where it stunts our natural growth and development and affects our ability to interact with our peers in our physical existence. Could look at film/advertising that links to this idea.
Virtual Existence- Researching people’s virtual existence and different social media platforms. Look at how we are able to create/imagine a whole new identity to the point where we almost become two separate identities living simultaneously as the same physical form.
Physical existence- Looking at social spaces and how we exist within them at the same time/different moments in time in the same social space.
Research the theory of time and how time passes, this can be done through creative responses to Stephanie Jung (overlapping photographs taken in the same spot of a bustling street/location)
Start to look deeper into the traces we leave behind as physical evidence of our existence.
Possible Creative Responses-
Overlapping images of people/portraits in a studio setting to show how we can exist as the same person but simultaneously have a virtual and physical existence.
Looking at a dystopian future as a consequence of our consumption in technology. (Dark shoot- face lit only by glare from smartphone/laptop screen- existing only in the shadow of virtual reality.)
OR could use lighting and different colours to create an almost dream-like shoot to show how we exist in the colourful world of technology and social media. Why are we always looking for something else to be consumed by? Why are we so bored with our physical existence that we constantly feel the need to create a new existence online? What is actually making us consumed with these devices- or is it what we can access and create on those devices that excites us?
Physical existence- taking various photographs from the same spot in a busy area. I.e. London/M25. Shows passing of time and how we all exist at some point in these same social spaces. Perhaps looking more into the traces we leave behind as evidence of our physical existence.

PRESENTATION FEEDBACK
Hey!
Research is going really well. Today we had to present an interim presentation showcasing our research and explaining what we were going to do next. This was so useful as I was able to get feedback from everyone and really took their suggestions on board! It has definitely made me think about what I want to carry on with and what I need to kind of leave behind. My area of research is so broad that I realised I have to cut a few things so I can really focus on a few areas of research.
When presenting my research and what my idea has developed into, I talked about how I aim to achieve an understanding of the ways in which our society is changing and use various creative forms as a tool to discuss and communicate the sad notion that due to social media and technology we are all merely existing simultaneously in a virtually dominated world. My newly developed idea is firstly about existence in today’s society as a whole and what makes up somebody's identity. However, it would also incorporate the idea of 'simultaneous living' and the fact that we all live in such close proximity but don't know the first thing about each other. I wish to explore the notion ofyou thinking you know somebody or know of them but when you really think about it you only know the tip of the iceberg. In most cases, you only know what people want you to know. Because of this perception, this notion could quite easily develop into the idea of technology and how it effects our ability to communicate in real-life situations and how through social media we have the ability to alter what people see of us and how people perceive us. I talked a lot about how my idea of simultaneous existence started out very much consumed by technology and the way we exist with technology as a whole, however it has developed a lot more into our relationship and interactions with technology and our virtual and physical existence being two separate beings existing simultaneously within one identity. The feedback I got from my peers was very positive. They commented that it was a very unique idea but had a lot of broad aspects to it like technology and identity which made it very relatable. However, I was also told that my title was a little bit confusing as it didn’t fully and clearly represent my idea and what I was trying to portray so this may be something that I have to edit and think about moving forward with my project. Some people said that maybe I should explore the fact that this notion of a society consumed with technology isn’t brand new and has in fact been around for a lot longer than we think, just art different extremes. For instance, when the telephone or the television was first invented everyone feared that we would all become obsessed with these devices and even made predictions that our eyes would go square-shaped if we kept watching the TV. I would like to look at the idea that although the smartphone is a device that is much easier and more accessible to become consumed with, these technological advances and anxieties/predictions have existed in every era since at least the early 1900’s, if not before, in different aspects of life. Moving forward, it was noticed that I need to look at some more context behind my work and start to create some creative responses to the artists I have looked at.
